ImageQuarry and Shutterstock AI: the differences that matter

Licensing comes first at Shutterstock

Shutterstock's FAQ, as captured on October 4, 2026, says commercial use is fine "as long as you license the image", names Standard, Enhanced, Media and Premier licenses, and offers human review with indemnification on select plans. For legal and brand teams that need that paper trail, it is a strong reason to choose Shutterstock. ImageQuarry has not published rights terms yet.

Brush and describe, or describe only

Shutterstock's Magic Brush asks you to brush over an image and describe what to add or remove, and its Background Remover lets you describe the replacement. In ImageQuarry you select a version and describe the change in words, including what to keep.

Privacy of what you make

Shutterstock says some plans make generations private by default, while on others generated content may be added to its library for others to view or license, and it cannot guarantee exclusivity. ImageQuarry keeps work in your projects and library.

Refining through versions

Shutterstock's page describes refining by revising and resubmitting the prompt, plus Variations for alternate options. ImageQuarry builds each request on the version you selected, keeps earlier versions and lets you branch from any of them.

Stock library and video in one account

Shutterstock's navigation includes an AI video generator, an AI image editor, a developer API and iOS and Android apps, next to its stock library.

About each product

ImageQuarry

ImageQuarry is a conversational AI image workspace. You describe an image or upload one, then ask for specific changes in words, such as new lighting, a different background or an added object. Each change makes a new version and earlier versions are kept, so you can make variations, branch from any version, add reference images and organize the work in projects and a library. You can choose between four image models: Nano Banana 2.1 (the default), Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image 2.5 Flare and GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst. Plans: Starter at $9 per month with 100 image credits a month, and Pro at $29 per month with 300 image credits a month, with optional metered overage that is off unless you turn it on. Every plan is paid. ImageQuarry has not published output specifications or rights terms yet, and it is not a headshot or background removal tool.

The Generative AI Plus plan gives 100 generations a month, each producing four images, and new users get two generations at no cost. Each downloaded image includes a Standard License, and the Teams and Enterprise tier adds human review and private generations. Shutterstock blocked automated reading of its pages, so these facts come from dated archive captures.

Which one fits your work

Choose ImageQuarry when

  • You want to keep refining one image through a series of written changes
  • You want every version kept, with branches from earlier ones
  • You want your own reference images to guide material, color or light
  • You want projects and a library rather than a stock marketplace around your work

Choose Shutterstock AI when

  • You want human review of generated content on an enterprise plan
  • You also buy stock photos, video or music from the same account
  • You want a model menu that includes Imagen 4 Ultra and Runway Gen-4

How to try both on the same image

  1. Write one brief for a campaign image, for example a summer drink on a beach table.
  2. In Shutterstock, generate with a model of your choice and use Magic Brush to swap one object.
  3. In ImageQuarry, describe the same image, then ask for the same swap in words and one more change to the light.
  4. Decide which matters more for this job: Shutterstock's stock licensing, or ImageQuarry's saved chain of versions.
