Gemini vs Midjourney for picture editing and generation

Gemini is Google's assistant, and its image feature runs on the Nano Banana models: you ask it to change a background, replace an object or add an element, upload a photo to edit, or combine two pictures. Midjourney is a dedicated subscription generator with its own V8.2 model, an Edit model and an Editor. Gemini has a free tier and marks images with a visible watermark and SynthID; Midjourney starts at $10 a month. Pick Gemini for quick edits inside Google; pick Midjourney for a dedicated image workflow.

We make ImageQuarry, which is not one of these two products. We compared Gemini and Midjourney using their own public pages, checked October 20, 2026.

Gemini and Midjourney: the differences that matter

Inside an assistant or its own app

Gemini generates and edits pictures in the same assistant you use for other questions, keeps them in a Library, and exports to Docs. Midjourney is a separate app built for images and video, with an Organize page, an Editor and Draft mode.

Combining photos

Gemini lets you upload two pictures and combine them into one, or apply texture, color or style from a reference photo. Midjourney's Edit model can combine several images using up to 4 references.

Cost to start

Gemini's Free plan includes image generation and editing, and Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month. Midjourney starts at $10 a month with no free trial on its website.

Unmarked, private images

Gemini adds a visible watermark as well as an invisible SynthID mark to its images. Midjourney's pages read mention no watermark, and Stealth Mode on Pro and Mega keeps images private.

Larger downloads

Midjourney documents images up to 2048 x 2048 with HD or its upscalers. Gemini says downloads are 2K with a Google AI plan and 1K without, while its overview lists 2K for the free model.
