ChatGPT vs Gemini: two assistants that make and edit pictures

Both ChatGPT and Gemini are general assistants that also generate and edit images. Gemini runs on Google's Nano Banana models, lets you change a background, replace an object or add an element by asking, and combines two uploaded pictures; it adds a visible watermark and an invisible SynthID mark. ChatGPT lets you select an area to change and comment on images in a Canvas view. Gemini's paid plans start lower, at $4.99 a month for Google AI Plus, while ChatGPT Go is $8, as of October 2026.

We make ImageQuarry, which is not one of these two products. We compared ChatGPT and Gemini using their own public pages, checked October 20, 2026.

ChatGPT and Gemini: the differences that matter

The models behind each assistant

Gemini's overview names Nano Banana 2 as its free model and Nano Banana 2.1 for Google AI plans, with "Redo with Pro" for Nano Banana Pro, though its help page lists the models differently. ChatGPT's docs say built-in image generation uses gpt-image-2, and its September 2026 release notes describe ChatGPT Images 2.5.

Watermarks on what you download

Gemini says it marks images with an invisible SynthID watermark as well as a visible one. The ChatGPT image pages read do not mention a watermark either way.

Price of the first paid tier

Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month and Google AI Pro $19.99. ChatGPT Go costs $8 and Plus $20 a month, as of October 2026.

Working through many images

ChatGPT's Canvas view shows the images from one chat together and lets you comment on one or more of them. Gemini keeps generated images in a Library in the sidebar, and you reopen one there and chat to change it.

Download size by plan

Gemini's help page says images download at 2K with a Google AI plan and 1K without, while its overview lists 2K for the free model. The ChatGPT pages read state no download size.

About each product

ChatGPT

ChatGPT generates and edits images in a conversation. You can attach a reference image to edit it or to use it as guidance, select an area and describe the change, and use Canvas view to comment on several images. Image creation depends on plan, from limited on Free to more on Go ($8) and Plus ($20), and Pro starts at $100 a month. It runs on web, iOS, Android and desktop.

Gemini

Gemini's image feature is powered by Google's Nano Banana models. You ask Gemini to change a background, replace an object or add an element, upload an image to edit, or combine two pictures into one, and take texture, color or style from a reference photo. Images carry a visible watermark and SynthID, download at 2K with a Google AI plan, and need you to be 18 or over. Plans run from Free to Google AI Plus at $4.99 and Pro at $19.99 a month.

  • You want to merge two uploaded pictures into one
  • You already use Google Docs and want Export to Docs
  • You want images marked as AI made, visibly and with SynthID

Where ImageQuarry fits

Both assistants put images inside a broader chat product. ImageQuarry is an image workspace instead: you describe or upload an image, ask for changes in words, and every change becomes a new version you can branch from. It includes Google's Nano Banana 2.1 as the default model, alongside Nano Banana Pro and two GPT Image models, and it keeps prompts, references and versions together in projects.

Questions about ChatGPT vs Gemini

Do ChatGPT and Gemini use the same image model?

Which one adds a watermark?

Gemini says it uses an invisible SynthID watermark and a visible watermark on images. The ChatGPT pages read for this comparison do not mention a watermark.

Is there a free way to try both?

Yes for both, as of October 2026: ChatGPT's Free plan has limited image creation, and Gemini's Free plan includes image generation and editing.

Can I combine two photos into one?
