fal vs Replicate for running image models by API
fal and Replicate are developer platforms that run image models behind an API and charge by use rather than by subscription. fal lists 1,000+ models with per-image prices, such as $0.15 for Nano Banana Pro, a Sandbox to compare models, and free browser tools. Replicate, now part of Cloudflare, bills most models by run time per hardware type, lists per-image prices for some models, and grants rights in output in its terms. Both are built for developers.
We make ImageQuarry, which is not one of these two products. We compared fal and Replicate using their own public pages, checked October 20, 2026.

fal and Replicate: the differences that matter
Per image or per second
fal prices most image models per output, for example $0.08 per image for Nano Banana 2 and $0.012 per megapixel for FLUX 2. Replicate bills most public models by run time per hardware type, from gpu-t4 at $0.81 an hour to gpu-h100 at $5.49, and lists per-image prices for some, such as $0.04 for flux-1.1-pro.
Where outputs live
fal stores generated files on its CDN for at least 7 days, and its FAQ says the URLs are public by default. Replicate's pricing page notes that private models are billed for all the time instances are online.
Commercial terms
Replicate's terms, last updated April 1, 2026, grant you rights in output including commercial use, subject to third party terms. fal says each model has its own license and marks commercial models with a badge.
GPU rental
fal also rents H100, H200 and B200 GPUs by the hour, with H100 listed at $4.50 an hour. Replicate lists hardware prices for running models rather than separate GPU rental.
Company status
Replicate joined Cloudflare and says it will carry on as a distinct brand, with its API unchanged. The fal pages we read do not mention any change of ownership.

About each product
fal
fal calls itself "the generative media inference platform": one API for 1,000+ image, video, audio and 3D models, plus serverless GPUs and clusters. Its image catalog includes Seedream 5.0, GPT Image 2.5, Nano Banana 2.1, Flux 2 and Krea 3, priced per output, such as $0.15 per image for Nano Banana Pro as of October 2026. Purchased credits expire after 365 days. It offers Python and JavaScript clients, a Sandbox for comparing models, and free browser tools for background removal and upscaling.
Replicate
Replicate runs open and proprietary models through a cloud API, and lets you fine-tune and deploy your own. Its blog announced on November 17, 2025 that it is joining Cloudflare while keeping its brand and API. Most public models bill by run time on the hardware used, and some image models have per-output prices, such as $0.04 for flux-1.1-pro. A Playground lets signed-in users compare models in the browser. Replicate's terms grant users rights in output, including commercial use, subject to third party terms.

Where ImageQuarry fits
fal and Replicate are for developers who call models from code. ImageQuarry is a workspace you use directly: describe or upload an image, ask for a change, and keep each version alongside its prompt and references. Two of its four models, Nano Banana 2.1 and Nano Banana Pro, are Google image models, and two are GPT Image models. Plans are Starter at $9 per month with 100 image credits a month and Pro at $29 per month with 300 image credits a month, with optional metered overage that is off unless you turn it on.
Questions about fal vs Replicate
Is fal cheaper than Replicate?
It depends on the model. As of October 2026, fal lists Nano Banana Pro at $0.15 per image, and Replicate lists flux-1.1-pro at $0.04 per output image and bills many models by run time. Compare the exact model you plan to use.
Did Cloudflare buy Replicate?
Replicate's blog post of November 17, 2025 says it is joining Cloudflare and will carry on as a distinct brand with the same API.
Can I use fal or Replicate outputs commercially?
Replicate's terms grant rights in output for commercial purposes, subject to third party terms. fal says each model has its own license, and models marked Research only are non-commercial.
Do fal and Replicate have a free tier?
Neither describes a standing free plan. fal grants free credits and coupons that expire, and Replicate's Try for Free collection allows a limited number of runs without a credit card.
