ImageQuarry and ChatGPT: the differences that matter

A general assistant or a place made for pictures

ChatGPT is a general assistant, and its pictures sit in an Images section of the ChatGPT sidebar next to everything else you do there. ImageQuarry is built around images only: the prompt, the uploaded source, the references and every version stay together.

Region edits and comments

ChatGPT's documentation says you can select a specific area of an image and describe the change for that area, and in Canvas view Comment adds precise feedback to one or more images. ImageQuarry works on a selected version: you describe the change, can name what to keep, and check the new version that comes back.

Versions and branches

Each ImageQuarry change becomes a new version while the earlier ones are kept, and any earlier version can start a branch for another direction. The ChatGPT documentation read for this page describes Focused and Canvas views of a chat's images but does not mention branching from an earlier version.

Starting without paying

ChatGPT lists a Free plan with limited image creation, then Go at $8, Plus at $20 and Pro from $100 a month, as of October 2026 on chatgpt.com. ImageQuarry plans are paid monthly subscriptions: Starter at $9 per month with 100 image credits a month, or Pro at $29 per month with 300 image credits a month.

Phones and the desktop

ChatGPT lists access on web, iOS and Android, and its image generation also appears in the ChatGPT desktop app. If most of your picture work happens on a phone, that reach counts for ChatGPT.

A separate image API

OpenAI sells an Image generation API for programmatic work, separate from the ChatGPT app, which matters if you are building image features into your own product.

About each product

ImageQuarry

ImageQuarry is a conversational AI image workspace. You describe an image or upload one, then ask for specific changes in words, such as new lighting, a different background or an added object. Each change makes a new version and earlier versions are kept, so you can make variations, branch from any version, add reference images and organize the work in projects and a library. You can choose between four image models: Nano Banana 2.1 (the default), Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image 2.5 Flare and GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst. Plans: Starter at $9 per month with 100 image credits a month, and Pro at $29 per month with 300 image credits a month, with optional metered overage that is off unless you turn it on. Every plan is paid. ImageQuarry has not published output specifications or rights terms yet, and it is not a headshot or background removal tool.

How to try both on the same image

  1. Write one image description and run it in both, word for word.
  2. Ask each for the same two changes in turn, such as warmer light and then a new background, and see how the second request builds on the first.
  3. In ImageQuarry, go back to the first version and branch in another direction; in ChatGPT, compare the chat results in Canvas view.
  4. Decide which record of the work you would rather reopen next week.
