Photo AI alternatives for headshots and photos of yourself
Photo AI (photoai.com) is a web service that trains a personal AI model from 5 to 15 of your photos, then generates new photos and videos of you from prompts and themed packs. People look elsewhere because its pricing page shows no free plan or trial, and Photo AI Starter ($19 a month) is for personal use only. HeadshotPro suits anyone who only needs professional headshots for a one-time price, Leonardo.Ai suits people who want to train their own models with mobile apps and an API, and Gemini or ChatGPT suit quick edits of an uploaded photo. ImageQuarry is a general image workspace where you upload a photo, ask for changes in words and keep every version, not a headshot service.
We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. Photo AI and each alternative were compared on photos of a real person, learning a face from your photos, editing in words, how you start, usage terms and platforms, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026.

What is Photo AI?
Photo AI calls itself "the first AI Photographer" for taking "photos featuring yourself as an AI model". You upload 5 to 15 photos, it builds a personal model of you (or a fully synthetic persona), and you generate shots with its Hyper Realism and Nano Banana Pro options. Magic Edit changes any photo from typed text, and higher plans add relighting, zoom out, combining photos, an upscaler and clothing try-on. It also makes videos, including talking videos and Mocap. Photo AI was formerly known as Avatar AI.
Photo AI is not Topaz Photo AI, the desktop photo enhancer, even though many searches for "photo ai" mean that product.
Photo AI pricing
Credits renew every month on monthly and annual plans. A photo costs 2 credits with Hyper Realism and 10 with Nano Banana Pro, an upscale costs 5, and a relight costs 15. Writing your own prompts is listed from the Pro tier up. The pricing page showed a "Limited time offer: 6 MONTHS FREE" banner on annual billing. Prices as of October 2026, from photoai.com. Check the vendor for current pricing.

What Photo AI does well
A personal model from a handful of selfies
Photo AI asks for "just 5 to 15 photos" to create your own AI model, and it can also design a completely synthetic persona for AI influencer work. Its homepage FAQ says training uses DreamBooth on a Flux model.
Magic Edit changes a photo from typed text
Magic Edit lets you "modify any photo using text" instead of masking in Photoshop, with examples like "Make it sunset on the beach" and "Remove the person in the background".
A long list of photo tools on higher plans
The Max plan lists editing, cropping, zoom out, relighting, combining photos, a magic upscaler and clothing try-on for Shopify. The FAQ gives an upscale example of 3072x4096 from 768x1024.
Videos of you, not only stills
Photo AI also generates video with Seedance 2.5, talking videos and Mocap, and it has a browser multi-track video editor. Videos come in portrait, square, landscape and widescreen shapes and download without a watermark.
Commercial license from the Pro tier
Photo AI's FAQ says the Pro, Max and Ultra plans give you a commercial use license, while Starter is only for personal use.
Where Photo AI falls short
No free plan or trial on the pricing page
No free plan or free trial is listed on Photo AI's pricing page. The Starter card says both "48 free photos" per model and "No free auto-generated photos", so the bundled photos on Starter are unclear.
The entry plan is limited
Starter at $19 a month lists "Low quality photos", one photo at a time and personal use only, and writing your own prompts starts on the Pro tier ($49 a month).
Web only, with no API mentioned
Photo AI's FAQ says its iOS app is gone and existing iOS subscriptions have ended. No API or Android app is mentioned on the pages read on October 20, 2026.
No version history or projects described
Photos sit in a gallery where you can remix them or open Magic Edit, but the pages read describe no version history, branching or projects.
Some figures conflict on its own pages
The homepage gives two different video credit figures (300 credits for a video with sound in the table, 30 for a 15 second video in another answer) and three different training times.
Why people look for a Photo AI alternative
- You only need a set of professional headshots, and a monthly subscription is more than you want. HeadshotPro sells one-time packages starting at $29.
- You want to try something before paying, and Photo AI's pricing page lists no free plan or free trial.
- You need photos you can use for work on a small budget, and Photo AI's entry tier ($19 a month) is personal use only, with commercial use from the $49 tier.
- You want a phone app or an API. Photo AI's iOS app was withdrawn, and no API or Android app is mentioned.
- You want to keep each edit of one image and try other directions from an earlier step, which Photo AI's gallery pages do not describe.
The 6 Photo AI alternatives
Ordered by how directly each one gives you photos of yourself: a dedicated headshot service first, then tools that learn a face from a set of your photos, then general assistants that edit a photo you upload, and last a workspace that edits from your upload but is not built around portraits of one person.
1. HeadshotPro
Best for: Professionals who need a finished set of business headshots and nothing else
How it differs from Photo AI: HeadshotPro does one job: you upload a few selfies, pick styles or let it choose, and download a set of professional headshots. It sells one-time packages instead of a subscription, and its Terms license the service for personal and commercial use.
Price: Basic $29 one-time for 30 headshots (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: There is no free-form prompting: you get headshots of yourself in its styles, and edits are limited to things like backdrops, outfits and blemishes.
2. Leonardo.Ai
Best for: Creators who want to train their own models and generate on web, phone or API
How it differs from Photo AI: Like Photo AI, Leonardo.Ai lets you train your own model, from what it calls a small collection of images (typically 10 to 20), and Essential at $12 a month includes 10 personal AI models. Unlike Photo AI, it has a free plan, iOS and Android apps and a pay as you go API, plus dozens of image models.
Price: Essential $12 a month billed monthly, or a free plan (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: It is a general creative platform, not a portrait service, and free plan creations are public with Leonardo.Ai holding rights to use them.
3. Gemini
Best for: Trying photo edits of yourself at no cost on web or phone
How it differs from Photo AI: Gemini works from a photo you upload: you ask it to change the background, replace an object or add an element. Google lists character consistency as a feature, its free plan includes image generation and editing, and it runs on the web, Android and iPhone.
Price: Free plan; Google AI Plus $4.99 a month (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Images carry a visible watermark as well as an invisible SynthID mark, and you must be 18 or over to generate or edit images.
4. ChatGPT Images
Best for: ChatGPT subscribers who want to restyle a photo of themselves in conversation
How it differs from Photo AI: In ChatGPT you attach a photo to the message and ask for an edit, or select one area and describe what should change there. Canvas view shows every image from the chat, and Comment lets you leave feedback on one or several of them.
Price: Plus $20 a month; the free plan has limited image creation (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: How many images you can make depends on your plan, and the free plan's image creation is described only as limited.
5. OpenArt
Best for: Creators building a recurring character or AI influencer across images and video
How it differs from Photo AI: OpenArt's Character builder turns reference images or a text brief into a saved character you tag in later generations, and it says likeness holds across every edit from a reference. It also lists AI Headshot and AI Influencer tools, and a trial plan with daily credits.
Price: Trial plan with daily credits; Starter $14 a month (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: The Starter card does not list commercial use rights, which appear from the $34 Plus plan, and the homepage leans heavily toward video.
6. ImageQuarry
Best for: Taking one uploaded photo through several directed changes for a portrait or editorial concept
How it differs from Photo AI: Photo AI is built to generate many new photos of one person from a model trained on their selfies. ImageQuarry is a general creative workspace: you start from an image you upload, describe the change you want, and each result arrives as a new version while the earlier ones stay. You can ask it to keep the face, hands and crop while changing the light, then compare versions and download the one you choose.
Price: From $9 a month on Starter, $29 on Pro (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: ImageQuarry is not a professional headshot service, every plan is paid, and it has published no Terms or rights policy, which matters when the photos show real people.
Who should stay with Photo AI
- You want a steady supply of new photos of yourself in themed packs, all from one personal model trained on your selfies.
- You make video of yourself as well as stills, such as talking videos or Mocap clips, and want both in one account.
- You are building a fully synthetic persona for AI influencer content, which Photo AI supports directly.
- You are on Pro or above, use the commercial license, and lean on Magic Edit, relighting and zoom out for finishing.
How to try an alternative alongside Photo AI
- Keep the 5 to 15 source photos you trained Photo AI on, since a headshot service or a model trainer elsewhere will ask for its own set of your photos.
- Save copies of your favorite results from the Photo AI gallery, and download any videos you want to keep.
- Write down the prompts and Magic Edit instructions that worked, in plain sentences, so you can reuse them as requests in another tool.
- Pick the job you want covered (a headshot set, a trained model, or edits of one photo) and run one small test there before changing your Photo AI plan.
- Check the commercial terms of the new tool before you use the photos for work, as plans differ on this.
Does not carry over: Your trained Photo AI model, its photo packs and any synthetic persona stay inside Photo AI; another service needs your photos again.
Photo AI alternatives: questions
Is there a free alternative to Photo AI?
Gemini's free plan includes image generation and editing of photos you upload, Leonardo.Ai gives 150 fast tokens a day, ChatGPT's free plan has limited image creation, and OpenArt offers a trial plan with daily credits, as of October 2026. Photo AI's pricing page lists no free plan or trial. Every ImageQuarry plan is paid.
What is the cheapest way to get AI headshots instead of Photo AI?
If you only need headshots, HeadshotPro's Basic package is $29 one-time for 30 headshots, with no subscription. Photo AI's entry tier is $19 a month billed monthly, but it lists low quality photos and personal use only; the commercial license starts on its $49 a month tier.
Which Photo AI alternative can learn my face from my photos?
Leonardo.Ai lets you train your own models from a small set of images, typically 10 to 20, and HeadshotPro builds headshots from a few selfies. OpenArt saves a Character from reference images, and Gemini lists character consistency. In ChatGPT you attach your photo to the request as a reference.
Does Photo AI have an app or an API?
Photo AI is web only now: its FAQ says the iOS app is gone, and no API or Android app is mentioned. Leonardo.Ai has iOS and Android apps and an API, and ChatGPT runs on web, iOS and Android, with OpenAI's image API sold separately.
How does ImageQuarry compare with Photo AI?
Photo AI trains a model of you and generates new photos and videos from it. ImageQuarry is not a headshot service: you start from an image you upload or a description, ask for changes in words, and keep every version, with plans at $9 and $29 a month.
