OpenArt alternatives for still images and clear commercial rights
OpenArt is a web platform for making AI images and videos with many third party models, including GPT Image 2.5, Nano Banana 2 and Seedream 5.0 Pro, plus characters, worlds and a chat-driven video Director. Two details on its own pages push image buyers to look around: the $14 Starter card does not list commercial use rights, which appear from Plus upward, and the homepage leans heavily toward video. Recraft and Ideogram suit buyers who want plain commercial terms on a lower plan, and Leonardo.Ai and Adobe Firefly suit people who need phone apps. ImageQuarry suits still images refined through typed changes and kept versions.
We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. OpenArt and each alternative were compared on usage terms by tier, focus on still images, platforms, editing in words and price, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026.

What is OpenArt?
OpenArt's FAQ calls it "an all-in-one platform for creating AI images and videos". You pick a model such as GPT Image 2.5, Grok Imagine, Nano Banana 2 or Seedream 5.0 Pro, then "edit the same image in the same canvas" to erase, expand, swap backgrounds, restyle or upscale. Chat Mode lets you "Chat to create anything", the Character builder saves characters from reference images for reuse, and video runs through models like Kling 3.0, Sora 2 and Veo 3.1 or the chat-driven Director Mode.
OpenArt is a platform for many third party models, so the look of an image depends on which of those models you choose for it.
OpenArt pricing
Each plan card shows two figures, a higher one and a lower per-seat monthly figure with a percentage off, beside a billing toggle that reads "Monthly" and "Annually UP TO 27% OFF". Image counts on the cards are approximate (for example "Up to ~4,000 images"). An Extra Credit add-on is $15 a month for 5,000 credits. Prices as of October 2026, from openart.ai. Check the vendor for current pricing.

What OpenArt does well
A long list of image and video models
OpenArt's menu lists image models including GPT Image 2.5, Grok Imagine, Qwen Image 3, Nano Banana 2 and Seedream 5.0 Pro, and video models such as Seedance 2.5, Kling 3.0, Sora 2 and Veo 3.1.
Generate and edit on one canvas
The homepage says you can edit the image you just made "in the same canvas": erase, expand, swap backgrounds, restyle or upscale to 4K.
Characters you can reuse
The Character builder creates a character from reference images or a text brief, saves it to OpenArt's library, and lets you tag it in later generations, and OpenArt says likeness holds across every edit when you drop in a reference.
Chat-driven creation
Chat Mode is described as "Chat to create anything", and Director Mode lets you shape each video shot by natural chat.
Folders, labels and agent access
OpenArt's app sorts work into Assets, Director Projects, Character and World, Brand kit and Media with folders and labels, and OpenArt MCP and CLI let you create from inside AI agents such as Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor.
Where OpenArt falls short
Commercial rights are unclear on Starter
The Starter card does not list "Commercial use rights", which appear on Plus, Pro and Wonder, while the homepage FAQ says you can use what you create anywhere without naming a plan.
A video-first homepage
Most homepage use cases are video (short film, music video, UGC ads, product ads, film trailer, micro drama), with video up to 15 seconds long.
No phone app linked
The homepage links a web app, MCP and CLI tools, an After Effects plugin and Discord, but no mobile app link was found on it as of October 2026.
Two prices on every card
Each plan card shows a higher figure and a lower per-seat monthly figure with a percentage off, next to a toggle offering annual billing up to 27% off, so check which figure applies before you pay.
Why people look for a OpenArt alternative
- You want commercial rights written on the plan you buy, and OpenArt's Starter card does not list them while its FAQ makes a broader promise.
- You make still images, and OpenArt's homepage use cases are mostly video, from short films to UGC ads.
- You want to create on a phone, and no mobile app is linked from OpenArt's homepage.
The 5 OpenArt alternatives
Ordered by how many of the three reasons each covers: commercial rights stated for the lowest paid plan first, then a focus on still images, then phone apps.
1. Recraft
Best for: Designers who want vectors, mockups and commercial rights from the first paid plan
How it differs from OpenArt: Recraft's pricing page says paid plans grant full ownership and commercial rights for everything generated while subscribed, starting with Basic at $12 a month billed monthly. Its studio is built around still design work, with editable vectors, mockups and a plain language image editor, and video only arrives on Pro. It has iOS and Android apps.
Price: Free plan with limited credits; Basic $12 a month billed monthly (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Free plan images are public, owned by Recraft and not licensed for commercial use, and unused subscription credits do not roll over.
2. Ideogram
Best for: Graphics with words in them, where the vendor says it claims no ownership of your images
How it differs from OpenArt: Ideogram's pricing page says it does not claim ownership of generated images and that you may use them commercially, without tying that to a plan. Its catalog centers on its own image models, Ideogram 3.0 to 4.5, and Precise Edit changes an image from a focused instruction. The footer links an iPhone app.
Price: Ideogram Plus at $20 monthly ($180 a year if billed annually) (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Images go to the public community gallery by default unless you are on Plus or Pro, and subscription plans come with no free trial.
3. Leonardo.Ai
Best for: Creators who want phone apps and ownership of paid images in a multi-model platform
How it differs from OpenArt: Leonardo.Ai's pricing page gives paid subscribers full ownership and copyright of their images and makes creations private from the Essential plan at $12 a month. It lists iOS and Android apps, and its image models include its own Lucid and Phoenix next to GPT Image 2.5 and Nano Banana Pro.
Price: Free plan with 150 fast tokens a day; Essential $12 a month (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: It is as keen on video as OpenArt, with Kling 3.0, Veo 3.1 and its own Motion 2.0, and free tier creations are public.
4. Adobe Firefly
Best for: Teams already paying for Adobe who want generation inside the same subscription
How it differs from OpenArt: Adobe's plans page states that outputs from Adobe's own Firefly models are safe for commercial use, and eligible enterprise customers can get IP indemnification for select outputs. Firefly runs on iOS and Android as well as the web, and Firefly Boards gives every individual plan a visual workspace for mood boards and storyboards.
Price: Daily free generations, then Firefly Standard at US$9.99 a month (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Pro Plus is US$49.99 a month at its regular price; a first-year promotion on it was shown only until October 21, 2026.
5. ImageQuarry
Best for: Still images that go through several rounds of typed changes
How it differs from OpenArt: OpenArt's homepage use cases are mostly video, from short films to UGC ads. ImageQuarry stays with still images: you describe a picture or upload one, ask for changes in words, and every version sits in a project with the prompt and references behind it. Branching from an earlier version lets you try a second direction without losing the first.
Price: Two monthly plans: Starter $9, Pro $29 (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: ImageQuarry publishes no Terms or rights policy at present, so it does not settle the rights question that pushes people off OpenArt, and every plan is paid.
Who should stay with OpenArt
- Most of your work is video, such as music videos, product ads or micro dramas, and you want image and video models in one account.
- You reuse the same characters across many generations with the Character builder and its library.
- You pay for Plus or above, where commercial use rights are listed on the plan card.
- You generate from inside an AI agent through OpenArt's MCP and CLI.
How to try an alternative alongside OpenArt
- Open Assets in OpenArt and download the images you want to keep, one folder or label at a time.
- If they were made on Starter or the trial, check OpenArt's terms for them, since the pricing page lists commercial use rights only on Plus, Pro and Wonder.
- Save the reference images behind each of your characters, because a character stored in OpenArt's library has to be rebuilt from those references elsewhere.
- Run a handful of your image briefs in the alternative, including one edit such as a background swap, and compare the two sets side by side.
- If video is still part of your work, keep OpenArt for it while the alternative takes over still images.
Does not carry over: Characters, Worlds, Brand kits and Director Projects are OpenArt features and stay in your OpenArt workspace.
OpenArt alternatives: questions
Is there a free alternative to OpenArt?
Yes. Adobe Firefly offers free daily generations, Leonardo.Ai gives 150 fast tokens a day, Ideogram gives eligible free accounts weekly credits, and Recraft has a free plan with limited credits, though its free images are public and not licensed for commercial use. OpenArt itself starts with a trial plan with daily credits. ImageQuarry starts at Starter, which is paid.
What is a cheaper OpenArt alternative with commercial rights?
On OpenArt, the first card that lists commercial use rights is Plus, shown at $34. Recraft Basic is $12 a month billed monthly and grants commercial rights, Leonardo.Ai Essential is $12 a month with full ownership for paid subscribers, and Ideogram Plus is $20 a month under a terms statement that claims no ownership of your images.
Which OpenArt alternative focuses on images rather than video?
Ideogram's catalog centers on its own image models, and Recraft is a design studio for raster images, vectors and mockups, with video only on Recraft Pro. ImageQuarry makes still images only, refined through changes you describe in words.
Does OpenArt have a mobile app, and which alternatives do?
No mobile app link was found on OpenArt's homepage. Recraft, Leonardo.Ai and Adobe Firefly each list iOS and Android apps, and Ideogram's footer links an iPhone app.
Is there an alternative to OpenArt Director?
Director is OpenArt's chat-driven video tool. For video, Leonardo.Ai offers models such as Kling 3.0 and Veo 3.1, and Adobe Firefly includes Text to Video as a credit-based premium feature. ImageQuarry makes images and is not a video tool.
How does ImageQuarry compare with OpenArt?
OpenArt covers images, video, characters, worlds and audio with many third party models. ImageQuarry is narrower: you create a still image from a description or an upload, ask for changes in words, and keep each version, with the option to branch from an earlier one. Its plans are Starter at $9 and Pro at $29, billed monthly.
