Gemini image generation alternatives for people who edit with words

Gemini image generation is the image feature inside Google's Gemini assistant app, run on Google's Nano Banana models: you describe a picture, upload one, or ask Gemini in chat to change the background, replace an object or add an element. People look elsewhere because Gemini marks images with a visible watermark as well as SynthID, and because the newest model and Redo with Pro sit behind a Google AI plan. Adobe Firefly and Leonardo.Ai suit people who want many model families in one app, and ChatGPT Images suits people who want the same chat habit with another vendor. ImageQuarry suits people who want each change saved as a version they can branch from.

We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. Gemini image generation and each alternative were compared on model choice, editing in words, references, watermarks, how work is organized, platforms and price, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026.

What is Gemini image generation?

Google presents Gemini's image tool as an "AI image generator & photo editor" built on Nano Banana. Nano Banana 2 comes with the Free plan, and a Google AI plan unlocks Nano Banana 2.1 and lets paid users regenerate with Nano Banana Pro. You edit by telling Gemini what to change, or you upload an image and ask for edits. Reference photos can pass on texture, color or style, and two pictures can be combined into one. Generated images land in a Library in the sidebar.

Gemini is a general assistant with image generation inside the chat, not a separate image workspace with projects.

Gemini image generation pricing

Google's US plans page shows monthly prices only, with no annual price. Storage is 15 GB on Free, 400 GB on Plus, 5 TB on Pro and from 20 TB on Ultra, and the Free plan gets limited Nano Banana Pro access in Google Flow. Gemini Enterprise Business edition starts at $21 USD per seat per month. Prices as of October 2026, from gemini.google. Check the vendor for current pricing.

What Gemini image generation does well

Edits by asking in the chat

Google's page says that if you do not like a result you can ask Gemini to change it, such as swapping the background, replacing an object or adding an element. You can also upload your own photo and ask for edits.

Reference photos and combined images

Gemini can take the texture, color or style from a reference photo and apply it to your subject, combine two uploaded pictures into one, and lists character consistency as a feature.

Image editing on the Free plan

The US plans page lists image generation and editing on the $0 Free plan, with Nano Banana 2 as the free model. Paid tiers start at $4.99 a month for Google AI Plus.

On the web, phones, tablets and desktop

Google's help page covers gemini.google.com, Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, and the navigation lists Gemini for desktop. Finished images can be sent to Google Docs with Export to Docs.

Where Gemini image generation falls short

A visible watermark on images

Google says Gemini adds an invisible SynthID watermark and a visible watermark to show images are AI-generated.

The newer models need a Google AI plan

Nano Banana 2.1 and Redo with Pro are for Google AI plan subscribers, and the help page labels Nano Banana Pro "Available with a Google AI Plan". The two pages also disagree on which models exist, since the help page does not mention 2.1.

1K downloads without a plan, by one account

The help page says downloads are 2K with a Google AI plan and 1K without one, while the overview page lists 2K under the free Nano Banana 2 model.

Adults only

Google's help page says you must be 18 or over to generate and edit images in Gemini.

Why people look for a Gemini image generation alternative

  • You do not want a visible mark on your images, and Google says Gemini adds one alongside its invisible SynthID watermark.
  • You want models from other labs, not only Nano Banana, since Gemini's image tool runs on Google's models and keeps 2.1 and Pro for paying subscribers.
  • You want image work kept in its own place with its history, while Gemini puts results in a sidebar Library and you change one by opening it in chat.
  • You need full-size downloads without a subscription, and Google's help page lists 1K for accounts without a Google AI plan.

The 6 Gemini image generation alternatives

Ordered by how many of the reasons above each one meets: other model families, a way to start without a subscription, and a separate place to keep and organize image work.

1. Adobe Firefly

Best for: People who want Nano Banana next to Adobe's own Firefly model and other partner models

How it differs from Gemini image generation: Firefly offers Adobe's Firefly Image 5 alongside partner models such as Gemini 3.1 with Nano Banana 2, GPT Image 1.5 and FLUX.2 [pro], so the Google model becomes one option among several. Prompt to Edit adds, removes or replaces objects and backgrounds from a typed change, and Firefly Boards gives mood boards a home of their own.

Price: Standard plan US$9.99 monthly, after free daily generations (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Adobe's commercial safety statement covers only its own Firefly models, and Content Credentials are attached to outputs automatically.

2. Leonardo.Ai

Best for: Creators who want a large model menu, image guidance references and an API

How it differs from Gemini image generation: Leonardo.Ai lists Nano Banana Pro and Nano Banana 2 among more than a dozen image models, including GPT Image 2.5, Ideogram 4.5, Seedream 5.0 Pro and its own Lucid and Phoenix. Paid plans allow up to 6 image guidance references and unlimited personal collections, and a pay as you go API is sold separately.

Price: Essential at $12 monthly, or 150 fast tokens a day at no cost (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Free plan creations are public, and the pages read do not describe changing an image by typing an instruction.

3. ChatGPT Images

Best for: People who like asking an assistant for edits and want OpenAI's image model instead

How it differs from Gemini image generation: ChatGPT works the same way as Gemini, inside a chat, but adds two controls Gemini's pages do not describe: selecting an area of the image to describe a change there, and a Canvas view where you comment on one or more images generated in that chat. It uses OpenAI's own image model rather than Nano Banana.

Price: Go plan $8 monthly; Free plan has limited image creation (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Image limits depend on the plan, and image generation through code is sold as a separate API.

4. ImageQuarry

Best for: People who refine an image over many requests and want each step kept as a version

How it differs from Gemini image generation: Gemini returns an edited image in the chat and saves it in the Library. ImageQuarry keeps the path instead: you select a version, describe the change, and get a new version while the earlier ones stay, next to the prompts and references that produced them. Nano Banana 2.1 is the default model, Nano Banana Pro is on hand, and two GPT Image models give a different result for the same request.

Price: $9 monthly for Starter, $29 for Pro (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: There is no plan without a charge, ImageQuarry makes still images only, and it publishes no output specifications or Terms yet.

5. Ideogram

Best for: Posters, invitations and ads where the words inside the picture have to read correctly

How it differs from Gemini image generation: Ideogram runs its own Ideogram 4.5 and 4.0 models, plus models from other labs. Precise Edit takes a focused instruction with optional masks and guiding references, and Studio works through canvas versions with image and text layers, which suits layouts more than Gemini's chat.

Price: Plus $20 monthly; eligible free accounts get weekly credits (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Images are published to the community by default unless you pay for Plus or Pro, and editing needs priority credits.

6. Meta AI

Best for: People who create and share images in Instagram and WhatsApp and want an assistant there

How it differs from Gemini image generation: Meta AI is another assistant with built-in images, using Meta's Muse Image model. You can add, remove or change any part of an image with a description or a sketch, circle or annotate edits on the photo, restyle in one click, and animate a result into video.

Price: Free for everyday creation; Meta One Core $7.99 a month (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: The help center lists no projects, folders or version history, and Meta One plans are described as in limited testing in some places.

Who should stay with Gemini image generation

  • You already live in Google's apps and like sending finished images straight into Google Docs with Export to Docs.
  • Nano Banana 2 on the Free plan covers what you make, and the visible watermark does not matter for your use.
  • You pay for Google AI Pro anyway for storage or other Gemini features, so Nano Banana Pro and 2K downloads come with it.
  • You switch between phone, tablet and desktop during the day and want the same assistant on each.

How to move your Gemini images to an alternative

  1. Open Library in the Gemini sidebar and download, at full size, each image you want to keep working on.
  2. Copy the prompt and the follow-up requests that produced your best results from the chat, since they stay in Gemini.
  3. Save any reference photos you used for texture, color or style, and upload them again in the new tool.
  4. Recreate two or three of your usual requests in the alternative, including one edit where you asked to replace an object or the background, and compare.
  5. Keep Gemini for quick requests on your phone while the new tool handles the images you plan to revise many times.

Does not carry over: Gemini chats, the Library and Export to Docs stay in Google's apps; only the downloaded images move with you.
