Question

Can AI edit a photo without changing the face?

Usually, yes, if you say so in the instruction. Current image models can change clothing, background or light while keeping a face recognizable, but the face is regenerated with the rest of the image, so small shifts can still happen. Compare every result with the original before you use it.

Most instruction editors redraw the whole picture when they make a change. Naming what must stay the same, such as "keep the face, hands, crop and background", tells the model what to hold steady. OpenAI notes that its image models "may occasionally struggle to maintain visual consistency for recurring characters", and Google documents separate character reference images for the same reason.

Look closest at the eyes, teeth, skin texture and hairline. If one of them drifts, ask again from the original rather than from the drifted version, so errors do not stack up over several rounds.

In ImageQuarry you select a version and ask for the change in plain words, including what to keep. Each change becomes a new version next to the earlier ones, so you can put the edit beside the source and pick the one that still looks like the person.
