ChatGPT Images vs Meta AI: images inside two assistants

ChatGPT Images and Meta AI both create and edit images inside an assistant. Meta AI uses Meta's Muse Image model, is free for everyday creation, and reaches Instagram and WhatsApp, with styles to restyle an image in one click and markup to circle or sketch edits. ChatGPT Images supports reference images, area selection and a Canvas view with comments, on plans from Free to Pro. Pick Meta AI for quick social images in Meta's apps, and ChatGPT for more control inside a chat you already use.

We make ImageQuarry, which is not one of these two products. We compared ChatGPT and Meta AI using their own public pages, checked October 20, 2026.

Marking up the change

Meta AI lets you circle, sketch or annotate edits on top of a photo, and restyle with a library of styles. ChatGPT lets you select an area and describe the change, and comment on images in Canvas view.

Cost of everyday use

Meta says using Meta AI with Muse Image is free for everyday creation, with more creation in Meta One plans from $7.99 a month. ChatGPT's free tier lists "Limited image creation" in a Wayback capture of its pricing page from October 19, 2026.

Meta AI

Meta AI is Meta's assistant, and since July 2026 it makes and edits images with Muse Image, the first image model from Meta Superintelligence Labs. You can describe or sketch a change, restyle with presets, swap a person into a scene, combine photos and animate results. Meta says everyday creation is free, and its Meta One plans, announced September 15, 2026, start with Core at $7.99 a month. Muse Image also runs on Instagram and WhatsApp, and developers can call it at $0.01 per image.

Which one fits your work

Choose ChatGPT when

  • You want reference images to guide content and style separately
  • You want to compare and comment on images in a Canvas view
  • You already pay for ChatGPT for writing or code

Choose Meta AI when

  • You create mostly for Instagram or WhatsApp
  • You want everyday image creation without a subscription
  • You like sketching or circling the change on the photo
  • You want to animate an image after making it

Where ImageQuarry fits

Both assistants are general tools with image features. ImageQuarry is built only for image work: you keep asking for changes, each one becomes a new version, earlier versions stay available, and projects hold the prompts, references and versions together. It is a paid workspace, with Starter at $9 per month with 100 image credits a month. People who mostly post quick images to social apps may prefer an assistant they already use.
