Adobe Firefly vs Photoshop for generating and editing images

Firefly is Adobe's AI creative space for generating and editing images, video, audio and vectors, with Prompt to Edit, Boards and partner models from Google and OpenAI. Photoshop is Adobe's full image editor, where Generative Fill, Generative Expand and prompt editing sit next to selections, layers and masks. Firefly has a free tier and plans from $9.99 a month; Photoshop starts at $22.99 a month on an annual plan with 25 generative credits. Some Adobe plans bundle both. Start in Firefly to generate and make quick edits; use Photoshop when you need layer level control.

We make ImageQuarry, which is not one of these two products. We compared Adobe Firefly and Adobe Photoshop using their own public pages, checked October 20, 2026.

Adobe Firefly and Adobe Photoshop: the differences that matter

Firefly is cheaper to start and has a free tier

Firefly gives free daily generations, and Firefly Standard is $9.99 a month with 2,000 generative credits. Photoshop has a 7-day trial and no free plan, and its single-app plan is $22.99 a month on an annual commitment with 25 generative credits.

Photoshop gives layer level control

Generative Fill results land on a "Generative Layer" for nondestructive editing, and Photoshop adds masks and Markup to direct AI edits, plus a Light adjustment layer. Firefly's editor works through Prompt to Edit, Generative Fill, Expand, Recolor and Upscale without a layer stack described.

Commercial use wording differs

Firefly's plans page says outputs from Firefly models are "safe for commercial use", leaves partner model output to your judgment, and offers IP indemnification to eligible enterprises. Photoshop's Generative Fill FAQ answers "Yes" on commercial safety and then says app content "may not be used for commercial purposes", so read the terms for your case.

Partner models in both

Firefly lists GPT Image 1.5, Nano Banana 2 and FLUX.2 [pro] alongside Firefly Image 5. Photoshop offers Nano Banana Pro and FLUX.2 pro inside Generative Fill, and added GPT Image 2 for prompt edits in September 2026.

Boards for ideas

Firefly Boards is a visual workspace for mood boards and storyboards, unlimited on every individual plan. Photoshop works one document at a time across desktop, web and mobile.

About each product

Adobe Firefly

Adobe Firefly is "an AI-powered creative space that helps you create and edit images, videos, audio, and vector graphics", with more than 30 models in one place. Prompt to Edit adds, removes or replaces objects and backgrounds from a typed description, and Generative Fill, Expand, Recolor and Upscale cover other edits. Plans run from a free daily allowance to Premium at $199.99 a month, and Firefly model outputs are described as safe for commercial use.

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is Adobe's image editor, sold on desktop, web and mobile. Generative Fill, powered by Firefly, fills a selection from a prompt onto its own layer, and recent releases added editing with natural language prompts, an AI Assisted Editor in beta and GPT Image 2. Plans start at $22.99 a month on an annual commitment, and bundles add Lightroom or the full Creative Cloud.

  • You already edit photos professionally
  • You want Lightroom in the same plan
  • You need nondestructive generative edits

Where ImageQuarry fits

ImageQuarry sits between the two in spirit: it is not a layer editor, and it is built around a running conversation about one image. You select a version, ask for a change such as "Move the color into ultramarine and coral.", and get a new version while the earlier ones stay. You can also start from a photo you upload.
