IMAGE VARIATIONS

Pattern variations: colorways, scale and density from one motif

Surface designers rarely sell a pattern in one color. A print usually ships in three or four colorways, sometimes at two scales, and the motif that looks charming on a mug can feel busy on curtains. In ImageQuarry you describe or upload a pattern, ask for variations of its palette, scale and density, and keep every colorway as a version you can compare and download.

Change one property per round and compare the colorways together.

How to explore pattern variations with ImageQuarry

  1. 01

    Start with the motif

Describe the pattern, such as small lemons and leaves on a cream ground, or upload your own repeat. Each prompt stays with the image it created.

  2. 02

    Explore colorways

Ask for one colorway per version: a navy ground with white motifs, a muted sage version, a high-contrast black and yellow version.

  3. 03

    Test scale and density

On the colorway you like, ask for the motifs larger and more spaced out, or smaller and packed tighter. Each request makes a new version.

  4. 04

    Compare the collection

Compare versions side by side, choose the colorways for the collection and download them.

Pattern variation requests

Colorway

Colorways let one design sell into different rooms and seasons.

Scale

Scale decides whether a pattern suits a scarf or a sofa.

Density

Busy patterns hide seams and stains; open ones feel calm.

Two-color version

Some printing methods favor few colors.

Coordinate

Collections often pair a main print with a simpler coordinate.

Seasonal edit

Retail calendars ask for the same print refreshed for a season, which is quicker than drawing a new motif from scratch.

What to know about pattern variations

Repeat matters

A pattern for fabric or wallpaper has to tile without visible seams. When you choose a variation, check the repeat in a layout or textile tool before production.

Scale depends on the object

A motif that is a few centimeters across on a phone case can be far too small on a duvet. Decide the end use before choosing scale.

Colorways sell differently

Neutral and muted colorways often suit home textiles, while brighter ones suit accessories and packaging. Offer a range rather than one bet.

Print method limits color

Screen printing and some packaging processes charge per color, so a two or three color variation may be the practical choice.

Variations and branches

Generate variations to explore directions, and branch from any earlier version to develop a coordinate without losing the main print.

Textures as references

Add a fabric swatch or a texture you like as a reference to guide the look; check each version against it.

What are pattern variations?

Pattern variations are alternative versions of a repeating design, changing colorway, motif scale, density or direction, made to build a collection or to choose the version that suits a product.

They are not production-ready repeat tiles. A chosen variation usually needs its repeat set up and checked for seams in a textile or layout tool before printing.

Pattern variation questions

Can I upload my own pattern and make colorways?

Yes. Upload it and ask for one colorway per version. Each change produces a new version and earlier ones are preserved.

How many colorways should a collection have?

Many collections launch with three to five, covering a neutral, a dark and one or two brighter options. Make more than you need and choose the strongest.

Can I keep the motifs and change only the colors?

Say so in the request: keep the motifs and their positions, change only the colors. Review the new version to see how closely it followed that.

Will the pattern tile seamlessly?

Check the repeat in a textile or layout tool before production. Treat image variations as design options for that step.

Can I develop a coordinate print from the main one?

Branch from the main pattern's version and ask for a simpler coordinate. The main print stays where it was.

Where do the colorways live?

Versions live in the workspace with the prompts and references that produced them, and finished work can settle into named collections.

Create an image. Edit it with words. Keep refining.
