IMAGE STYLES

Synthwave style images with neon grids, striped suns and chrome

Synthwave is a look born from a music genre that pays tribute to 1980s soundtracks, arcade cabinets and late-night drives. Its images are recognizable at a glance: a glowing grid stretching to the horizon, a sun cut into horizontal stripes, magenta and cyan light, palm silhouettes, chrome lettering and a sports car heading into the dusk. It is used for album art, gaming setups, event posters, streams and merch. Because the visual vocabulary is so familiar, the challenge is giving each image its own idea. In ImageQuarry you describe the scene and the twist, then tune glow, palette and horizon through versions.

Use the classic ingredients as a stage, then add one subject of your own so the image is not a copy of every other synthwave poster.

How to create a synthwave image with ImageQuarry

  1. 01

    Set the stage

Describe the grid, the sun and the sky: "a magenta and cyan wireframe grid to the horizon, a large striped sun setting, purple sky with stars".

  2. 02

    Add your own subject

Place something specific on that stage: a lone astronaut, a cassette tape the size of a building, a city skyline made of synth keys.

  3. 03

    Tune the glow and palette

Select a version and ask for a softer glow, more orange in the sun or a lower horizon. Each request builds on the selected version.

  4. 04

    Say what to keep

When you try a new color scheme, say what to keep, then review the new version to see how closely it followed the request.

Synthwave requests to start from

The classic stage with a twist of your own. Each is a prompt to adapt, and every result is a version to keep or set aside.

Album cover

A cover needs the stage plus a central idea.

Night drive

The road toward the sun is the genre's signature image.

Stream background

Backgrounds need calm areas for webcam and overlays.

Event poster

Posters need a glowing focal point and room for text.

City skyline

Skylines in neon outline suit merch and wallpapers.

What makes an image synthwave

The grid

A glowing perspective grid running to the horizon is the strongest signal of the style.

The striped sun

A large sun with horizontal gaps, usually in orange to pink, sits on or near the horizon.

Magenta, cyan and purple

The palette is night-time neon. A small amount of orange or yellow keeps it warm.

Glow and haze

Soft bloom around lights and a hazy horizon create depth.

Chrome and silhouettes

Reflective chrome lettering and black palm or mountain silhouettes complete the scene.

Variations explore twists

Generate variations of a stage you like to find a better central idea.

What is synthwave style?

Synthwave style is a retro-futuristic look inspired by 1980s soundtracks and arcade culture: neon grids, striped suns, magenta and cyan light, chrome and night drives. In ImageQuarry you describe the scene and refine glow, palette and horizon through versions.

It is not the same as vaporwave, which leans on pastel colors, classical statues and early internet imagery rather than night-time neon and grids.

Synthwave style questions

How do I make my synthwave image less generic?

Keep the grid and sun as a stage and add one subject of your own, such as a giant everyday object or a specific place.

Can I change the colors without losing the composition?

Ask for the new palette and say the composition should stay; review the new version to see how closely it followed the request.

Can I explore several versions of an idea?

Yes. Generate variations to explore directions and continue with the one you like.

Can I add synthwave styling to my own photo?

Yes. Upload the photo and describe the neon grid, sky and palette you want around the subject.

Can I compare color schemes side by side?

Yes. Branch from the same version for each scheme; all versions stay so you can compare and download one.

Create an image. Edit it with words. Keep refining.

Set the grid, light the sun, add your idea

Describe the synthwave stage and your own central subject, then tune glow and color version by version.
