Question

What file format are AI images saved in?

Usually PNG, JPEG or WebP, depending on the tool and its settings. PNG keeps every pixel; JPEG and WebP make smaller files by compressing them, which suits photographs and web pages.

The format is chosen when the image is saved, not when it is generated, so the same picture can be delivered in different formats. Check what your tool offers before you download.

PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which suits graphics, text and images you will edit again. JPEG is lossy and is the usual format for photographs where file size matters. WebP supports both modes and is common on websites, but some older software and print services do not accept it.

If a service rejects a file, converting it to PNG or JPEG in any image editor solves it. Converting a JPEG to PNG does not bring back detail that compression removed.
