Question

What are image variations in AI?

Image variations are several alternative results for the same request, generated side by side so you can pick the strongest. They share the prompt or source image but differ in composition, pose, color or detail, because the same request rarely produces the same image twice.

Variations meet a different need than edits. An edit asks for one specific change to an image you already have; a variation asks the model to try the same brief again. Many tools offer both. OpenAI's image API takes a setting for how many images to return ("Use n to request multiple variations"), and Photoshop's Generative Fill shows variations to choose from.

Variations are most useful early, when the direction is still open. Late in the work, when one image is nearly right and only a detail needs to change, an edit is the better tool.

In ImageQuarry you can generate variations and branch from earlier versions, then compare the results and keep the one you want.
