Question
How many variations should I generate before choosing?
Two to four at a time is a practical starting point: enough to judge a direction, few enough to compare closely before you pick one to edit. Generating dozens tends to replace a decision with more images to sort. This is working advice, not a measured rule.
Variations help most when the request is open: a new concept, a first composition or a style you have not tried. Once an image is close, a specific edit is more dependable than another round of variations, because an edit keeps what already works and changes only what you name.
OpenAI's prompting guide recommends comparing results before adding more instructions and tuning one setting at a time. Applied to variations: look at the first set, decide what the best one gets right, then either edit it or rewrite the prompt with that in mind.
The right number depends on how open the brief is and how long review takes. In ImageQuarry, variations and later edits stay in the same project, so a variation you passed over is still there if you change your mind.
