Pixlr alternatives for AI photo editing and generation

Pixlr is a browser-based photo editor and AI suite from Pixlr Pte Ltd, with an image generator running Flux, Stable Diffusion XL and Nano Banana 2, a conversational Instruct Editor, Generative Fill and Expand, plus video and audio tools. People look elsewhere mainly because the Plus plan includes 80 AI credits a month while an FAQ promises unlimited editing on it, and because Pixlr's terms take a license to AI content you upload or publish on the platform. Fotor and MyEdit fit people who want edit-by-text with plain commercial use wording, Adobe Firefly fits heavier Generative Fill use, and Canva fits design work. ImageQuarry fits people who outgrow a 10 version edit history.

We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. Pixlr and each alternative were compared on editing in words, edit history, AI credits per month, usage terms, platforms and price, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026.

What is Pixlr?

Pixlr calls itself "a powerful AI photo editor, AI image generator, AI video maker, face swap, collage maker, and 20+ editing tools" in the browser. The generator offers Flux Schnell, Flux Dev, Flux Dev Ultra, Stable Diffusion XL and Nano Banana 2 and makes up to 8 images at once. Its Instruct Editor is "a conversational AI image editor" that saves up to 10 versions. Generative Fill, Generative Expand, object removal and Super Scale upscaling to 25 megapixels sit beside it, and Pixlr Agent chains generation, editing and effects.

Pixlr is a full photo editor with AI added, not only an AI image generator.

Pixlr pricing

Yearly billing lowers each plan: Plus to $1.99, Premium to $7.99 and Ultra to $19.99 a month, with the year's credits given upfront. Ultra's unlimited fast image generations are subject to fair use. Credit packs bought as top ups never expire. Prices as of October 2026, from pixlr.com. Check the vendor for current pricing.

What Pixlr does well

A conversational editor with history

The Instruct Editor asks you to "Type a natural language prompt describing how you want to transform your image", keeps up to 10 versions and lets you continue from any of them or compare results side by side.

Very low entry price

Pixlr Plus is $2.49 a month billed monthly, or $1.99 a month billed yearly.

Classic AI edit tools in the browser

Generative Fill works by selecting an area and describing what to generate, alongside Generative Expand, background and object removal and Super Scale upscaling up to 25 megapixels.

Start without an account

The free version works without an account, and new users get 20 images using 20 credits, while top up credit packs never expire.

One subscription on every device

A Pixlr subscription applies on the web, Pixlr Desktop, iOS and Android.

Where Pixlr falls short

Mixed messages on Plus credits

The Instruct Editor FAQ says to "subscribe to Pixlr Plus for unlimited editing", while the pricing page gives Plus 80 monthly AI credits, and an Ultra edit costs 5 credits.

A license to content on the platform

Pixlr's terms say uploading or publishing AI content on the platform grants Pixlr "an irrevocable, non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license".

Private mode starts on Premium

"Private mode for AI Generations" is listed as a Premium feature, not on Plus.

Edit history stops at 10 versions

The Instruct Editor saves edit history "with up to 10 versions".

Why people look for a Pixlr alternative

  • You edit a lot on Plus and keep running out, since it includes 80 AI credits a month despite the FAQ's "unlimited editing" line.
  • You do not want to grant a worldwide license on AI content you upload or publish, as Pixlr's terms describe.
  • You want private AI generations on an entry plan, and Pixlr lists Private mode from Premium up.
  • You rework one image over many rounds, and the Instruct Editor keeps 10 versions.

The 5 Pixlr alternatives

Ordered by how many of the reasons above each one answers, with usage terms and credits first. ImageQuarry is fourth: it answers the edit history reason best but every plan is paid and it has no published Terms yet.

1. Fotor

Best for: Pixlr users who want the same mix of photo editor and generator with rollover credits

How it differs from Pixlr: Fotor is the closest like-for-like swap: an online photo editor with a generator that runs Nano Banana, FLUX, GPT Image and others. You "describe what to change in plain text", and Fotor states that all generated images are supported for commercial projects. Unused credits roll over for up to 5 months while you stay subscribed.

Price: Free Basic plan; a separate Fotor page lists Pro at 8.99 with no billing period stated (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Plan prices on the main pricing page are loaded by script and were not readable, and a separate page shows conflicting annual figures.

2. MyEdit

Best for: Casual editors who want chat edits and clean downloads in a browser

How it differs from Pixlr: MyEdit, from CyberLink, edits photos when you chat with it, using Nano Banana for quick rounds or Flux for detail, and a smart brush limits a change to one area. Its generator page says images are yours to use for marketing, ads and client work and download with no MyEdit watermark.

Price: Business Pro $15 month to month; 3 free credits a day (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: No version history is described for Edit by Chat, and exports from the generator are JPG.

3. Adobe Firefly

Best for: Heavy Generative Fill users who do not want to count credits for it

How it differs from Pixlr: Pixlr's Generative Fill draws on a monthly credit pool. Firefly's plans include unlimited access to standard image features such as Generative Fill, with credits kept for premium features, and Prompt to Edit swaps objects or backgrounds from typed text. It runs in the browser and in iOS and Android apps.

Price: US$9.99 a month for Standard, with no-cost daily generations (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Individual Firefly plans start well above Pixlr Plus, and the commercial safety statement covers Adobe's own models only.

4. ImageQuarry

Best for: People whose image goes through more rounds than a 10 version history holds

How it differs from Pixlr: Pixlr's Instruct Editor caps its history at 10 versions. In ImageQuarry, each change you ask for creates a new version while earlier versions are preserved, and you can branch from any of them, not only the latest. Versions stay in projects with the prompts and references that made them.

Price: Starter is $9 per month; Pro is $29 per month (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: ImageQuarry has none of Pixlr's collage, face swap or video tools, has published no Terms yet, and every plan is paid.

5. Canva

Best for: People who use Pixlr for social graphics and want a full design suite

How it differs from Pixlr: If Pixlr is mostly where you make posts and collages, Canva puts Magic Edit, Magic Eraser, Magic Grab and an image expander into a full design editor with apps for Android and iOS. Canva AI 2.0 refines a design from a typed prompt on paid plans.

Price: Free plan with up to 20 AI uses a month; Pro US$18 month to month (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Canva's image models are not named in the indexed pages, and Pro allows up to 200 Premium AI uses a month.

Who should stay with Pixlr

  • You want the lowest monthly price for light AI editing, which Pixlr Plus at $2.49 delivers.
  • You like using one editor on the web, Pixlr Desktop and mobile with the same subscription.
  • You use Pixlr Agent or the face swap and collage tools along with the AI editor.
  • Ten saved versions are enough for how you edit.

How to try an alternative alongside Pixlr

  1. Download the earlier versions you want to keep from the Instruct Editor history, since Pixlr lets you download previous versions.
  2. Note the prompts that worked best in the Instruct Editor and Generative Fill, so you can reuse them.
  3. Run one area edit and one whole-image change in the alternative using the same photo.
  4. Read the alternative's terms on uploaded content and commercial use before moving client work.
  5. Keep any Pixlr top up credits you bought, since they never expire.

Does not carry over: Pixlr's edit history, Agent workflows and saved designs stay in Pixlr; only downloaded images move with you.

Pixlr alternatives: questions

Is there a free Pixlr alternative?

Fotor has a free Basic plan, MyEdit gives free accounts 3 credits a day, Canva's free plan includes up to 20 AI tool uses a month, and Adobe Firefly gives free daily generations. Pixlr itself works without an account. Every ImageQuarry plan is paid.

Which Pixlr alternative edits photos by text?

Fotor applies edits you describe in plain text, MyEdit's Edit by Chat changes photos as you chat, and Firefly's Prompt to Edit changes objects and backgrounds from a typed prompt. In ImageQuarry, you ask for the change in words and get a new version.

Does Pixlr Plus include unlimited AI editing?

The pages disagree. An Instruct Editor FAQ says Plus gives unlimited editing, while the pricing page lists 80 monthly AI credits for Plus, and edits cost 1, 3 or 5 credits depending on the mode.

Which alternative is clearest about commercial use?

Fotor says all generated images are supported for commercial projects, MyEdit says generated images are yours for marketing, ads and client work, and Adobe says outputs from its own Firefly models are safe for commercial use. Pixlr's FAQ says it retains no copyright, while its terms take a license on content you upload or publish.

How does ImageQuarry compare with Pixlr?

Pixlr is a full photo editor with many tools and a 10 version history in its Instruct Editor. ImageQuarry focuses on creating and changing images by request, with every version kept and branching from any of them, on Starter at $9 or Pro at $29 a month.

Create an image. Edit it with words. Keep refining.
