Adobe Photoshop alternatives for Generative Fill and AI editing

Adobe Photoshop is Adobe's professional image editor for desktop, web and mobile, and its generative AI features include Generative Fill, Generative Expand and, since August 2026, editing with natural language prompts, using Firefly and partner models such as Nano Banana Pro, FLUX.2 pro and GPT Image 2. People who only want those AI edits look elsewhere because the Photoshop plan includes 25 generative credits a month on an annual commitment, and because Adobe's Generative Fill page gives two conflicting answers on commercial use. Adobe Firefly is the closest swap, Pixlr suits budget browser editing, and Canva suits design work. ImageQuarry suits people who would rather describe each change than select and mask.

We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. Adobe Photoshop and each alternative were compared on editing in words, generative credits, usage terms, how you start, platforms and price, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026.

What is Adobe Photoshop?

Adobe says Photoshop helps you "Create, edit, and design with advanced workflows, precise selections, and AI-powered speed." For generative work, you select an area and write a prompt for Generative Fill, which is powered by Firefly and returns a Generative Layer for nondestructive editing. Generative Expand fills an extended canvas, Generate Similar gives variations, and a reference image can go with the prompt. Partner models include Nano Banana Pro and FLUX.2 pro, and recent releases added prompt-based editing and GPT Image 2.

This page covers Photoshop's generative AI features, not Photoshop's full set of manual editing and design tools.

Adobe Photoshop pricing

All four plans are annual commitments billed monthly. The Photoshop plan is US$263.88 a year when paid upfront, and Creative Cloud Pro is US$779.88 a year prepaid, with a US$34.99 a month offer for the first 3 months for new subscribers. A 7-day trial converts to a paid membership unless you cancel. Prices as of October 2026, from adobe.com. Check the vendor for current pricing.

What Adobe Photoshop does well

Generative edits that stay editable

Generative Fill results arrive as a Generative Layer, so the edit is nondestructive, and you can leave the prompt blank to fill a selection from its surroundings.

Firefly plus partner models

Photoshop on desktop offers Google's Gemini 3 with Nano Banana Pro and FLUX.2 pro inside Generative Fill, and the September 2026 release added GPT Image 2 for generation and prompt edits.

Prompt edits with masks and markup

The August 2026 release added editing with natural language prompts, a Light adjustment layer, masks to direct AI edits and Markup to guide them, alongside an AI Assisted Editor in beta.

Expand, vary and reference

Generative Expand fills new canvas beyond the crop, Generate Similar makes variations, and you can upload a reference image with the prompt.

Desktop, web and mobile

Photoshop runs on desktop, on the web and on mobile, and the Photoshop plan bundles Adobe Express Premium.

Where Adobe Photoshop falls short

Few generative credits on the Photoshop plan

The US$22.99 Photoshop plan includes 25 monthly generative credits, and standard AI features such as Generative Fill are accessed with those credits.

Conflicting commercial use answers

Adobe's Generative Fill FAQ answers "Yes" to whether it is safe for commercial use, then says content generated in the Photoshop app "may not be used for commercial purposes."

Annual commitment on every plan shown

Each plan on the Photoshop plans page is listed as "Annual, billed monthly", and the 7-day trial converts to a paid membership unless you cancel.

No free Photoshop plan

Adobe lists no free Photoshop plan and points people to the Adobe Express free plan instead.

Why people look for a Adobe Photoshop alternative

  • You use Generative Fill often, and 25 generative credits a month on the Photoshop plan run out quickly.
  • You need a clear answer on commercial use, and Adobe's Generative Fill page says both yes and no.
  • You want to pay month to month without an annual commitment, and every Photoshop plan shown is annual, billed monthly.
  • You want AI edits without a professional editor built around precise selections and advanced workflows.

The 5 Adobe Photoshop alternatives

Ordered by how many of the reasons above each one answers: more AI edits for the money, clearer commercial terms, monthly billing and a simpler way in. ImageQuarry sits third, strong on the simpler way in and weaker on terms.

1. Adobe Firefly

Best for: People who want Adobe's Generative Fill and models without the Photoshop app

How it differs from Adobe Photoshop: Firefly is Adobe's own AI app, and every Firefly plan lists unlimited access to standard image features such as Generative Fill instead of spending a small credit allowance on them. Prompt to Edit adds, removes or replaces objects and backgrounds from a typed description. Individual plans are shown as monthly, and there are free daily generations to start.

Price: Firefly Standard at US$9.99 a month, plus free daily generations (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Adobe's statement that outputs are safe for commercial use covers its own Firefly models, not partner models.

2. Pixlr

Best for: Budget editors who want Generative Fill style tools in a browser for a few dollars

How it differs from Adobe Photoshop: Pixlr runs in the browser and has its own Generative Fill (select an area and describe what to generate), Generative Expand and object removal. Its Instruct Editor takes a natural language prompt and saves up to 10 versions you can return to. Pixlr Plus is $2.49 a month billed monthly, and the FAQ says Pixlr retains no copyright in text to image generations.

Price: Plus $2.49 a month billed monthly (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Plus includes only 80 AI credits a month, and the terms give Pixlr a license to AI content you upload or publish on the platform.

3. ImageQuarry

Best for: People who want AI edits by asking in words, without selections or layers

How it differs from Adobe Photoshop: Photoshop's generative edits start from a selection, a mask or markup inside a professional editor. In ImageQuarry, you upload an image or describe one, then ask in plain words for new lighting, a different background or an added object. Each request returns a new version and keeps the earlier ones, and a request can say what to keep as well as what to change.

Price: Two monthly plans, Starter at $9 and Pro at $29 (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: ImageQuarry is not a pixel editor and has no layers or manual retouching tools named, it has no published Terms yet, and every plan is paid.

4. Canva

Best for: Designers who make social posts and layouts and need light AI photo edits

How it differs from Adobe Photoshop: Canva's help centre describes Magic Edit as brushing over part of a photo and describing what to add or replace, and its photo editor page says Magic Edit runs on Nano Banana. Generative Fill, Magic Eraser, an image expander and an upscaler sit in the same editor, and the free plan includes up to 20 AI tool uses a month.

Price: Pro US$18 month to month (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: These facts come from search indexed copies of canva.com, and chat-based refinement with Canva AI is on Pro, Business and Enterprise only.

5. Picsart

Best for: Mobile and web editors who want many generation models and bulk editing

How it differs from Adobe Photoshop: Picsart lists 65 AI models, and through Ideogram 4.5 Precise Edit you can change one area of an uploaded picture with an optional mask. Pro adds bulk editing of up to 50 images and 100 GB of storage, and apps cover the web, iOS, Android and Windows.

Price: Pro $15 a month, or $10.5 a month billed yearly (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Usage rights depend on the AI model and your plan, so you check each model's licensing yourself.

Who should stay with Adobe Photoshop

  • You also need Photoshop's manual tools, layers and precise selections, with AI as one step in a larger edit.
  • You want nondestructive Generative Layers you can revise later in the same file.
  • You are on Creative Cloud Pro or the Photography plan, where the credit allowance is 4,000 or 1,000 a month.
  • You want Nano Banana Pro, FLUX.2 pro and GPT Image 2 available right inside your editing app.

How to try an alternative alongside Photoshop

  1. Save a flattened copy of the images you want to keep editing, since layered files and Generative Layers are Photoshop specific.
  2. Write down the prompts you used in Generative Fill, so you can reuse them as plain requests in the new tool.
  3. Pick two typical jobs, such as replacing a background and removing an object, and run them in the alternative.
  4. Check the alternative's commercial use terms against the work you plan to publish.
  5. Keep Photoshop until your annual term ends, since each plan is an annual commitment.

Does not carry over: Layers, masks, Generative Layers and actions stay in Photoshop files; other tools work from flattened images.

Adobe Photoshop alternatives: questions

Is there a free alternative to Photoshop Generative Fill?

Adobe Firefly gives free daily generations, Canva's free plan includes up to 20 AI tool uses a month, and Pixlr can be used without an account, with 20 images for new users. Picsart offers limited free generations each day. Every ImageQuarry plan is paid.

Is there a Generative Fill alternative online?

Yes. Pixlr's browser editor has a Generative Fill tool where you select an area and describe what to generate, Firefly's web app includes Generative Fill, and Canva has Magic Edit and Generative Fill in the browser.

What is the cheapest Photoshop AI alternative?

Billed monthly, Pixlr Plus is $2.49, Firefly Standard is US$9.99 and Picsart Pro is $15, as of October 2026. The Photoshop plan is US$22.99 a month on an annual commitment. Credits differ between products, so compare the edits you can make.

Can I use Photoshop Generative Fill images commercially?

Adobe's Generative Fill page answers yes, then says content generated in the Photoshop app may not be used for commercial purposes, so check your plan's terms. Adobe says outputs from its own Firefly models in Firefly are safe for commercial use.

How does ImageQuarry compare with Photoshop's AI features?

Photoshop combines AI edits with a full manual editor. ImageQuarry has no selections to draw: you ask for each change in words, and every result is a new version, with earlier ones kept so you can branch from them. Plans are Starter at $9 and Pro at $29 a month.

Create an image. Edit it with words. Keep refining.

Ask for the edit instead of selecting it

Upload a photo, say what should change and what should stay, and pick the version you like from the ones you have kept.
