Adobe Firefly alternatives for Generative Fill style edits outside Adobe
Adobe Firefly is Adobe's AI creative app for generating and editing images, video, audio and vector graphics with Adobe's own Firefly models and partner models from Google, OpenAI and others, sold as Firefly plans and inside Creative Cloud. Two points on its own pages send people looking: Adobe's commercial safety statement covers its own models and leaves partner model outputs to you, and individual plans show monthly prices only, with no yearly option. Ideogram and ChatGPT Images suit people who want Generative Fill style edits elsewhere, and Midjourney suits one model family under one set of terms. ImageQuarry suits people who refine an image by describing changes and keeping every version.
We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. Adobe Firefly and each alternative were compared on region editing, usage terms by model, model choice, platforms and price, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026.

What is Adobe Firefly?
Adobe describes Firefly as "an AI-powered creative space that helps you create and edit images, videos, audio, and vector graphics", with "30+ AI models, all in one place." Its own image model is Firefly Image 5, and partner models include GPT Image 1.5, Gemini 3.1 with Nano Banana 2, and FLUX.2 [pro]. Prompt to Edit changes objects and backgrounds from a typed description, next to Generative Fill, Generative Expand, Generative Upscale and background removal. Firefly Boards adds a space for mood boards and storyboards.
Firefly is both Adobe's own family of image models and the app that also runs partner models, and Adobe's commercial safety statement applies to the first, not the second.

What Adobe Firefly does well
Type the change with Prompt to Edit
Adobe tells you to "Type a clear description of what you'd like to change directly into the prompt field", and Prompt to Edit adds, removes or replaces objects and backgrounds, with a choice of the Firefly model or partner models.
A full set of generative edits
Firefly also names Generative Fill, Generative Recolor, Generative Expand for other aspect ratios and sizes, Generative Upscale and background removal, and accepts your own JPEG, PNG or WebP files up to 100MB.
A commercial statement on Adobe's models
Adobe states that "Outputs from Adobe Firefly AI models are safe for commercial use", and eligible enterprise customers can receive IP indemnification for select Firefly outputs.
Over 30 models in one app
Alongside Firefly Image 5, the app offers partner models such as GPT Image 1.5, Gemini 3.1 with Nano Banana 2 and FLUX.2 [pro], plus partner models from ElevenLabs, Luma AI and Runway for other media.
Web, phones and Adobe bundles
Firefly runs on the web and in iOS and Android apps, and some plans add Photoshop, Adobe Express Premium and Adobe Fonts; every individual plan includes Firefly Boards.
Where Adobe Firefly falls short
Partner model outputs are your call
For partner models Adobe says "You're responsible for determining whether content generated by partner models is appropriate for your project."
Higher tiers jump in price
Above Pro at US$19.99, the next individual tier is Pro Plus at US$49.99 a month and then Premium at US$199.99; a 30% first-year promotion on both was shown only until October 21, 2026.
Premium features draw on credits
Standard image features like Generative Fill are unlimited on all plans, but premium features such as Text to Video and Generate Speech are paid with credits.
No number on the free plan
The free plan promises daily generations that refresh every day but states no credit amount.
No yearly price for individuals
Individual plans are shown as monthly with no annual price, while team plans are annual, billed monthly.
Why people look for a Adobe Firefly alternative
- You want Generative Fill style edits, selecting an area and typing what goes there, in a tool outside Adobe's apps and plans.
- You generate with partner models too, and Adobe's commercial safety statement leaves those outputs for you to judge.
- You need more than 4,000 credits a month, and the next individual tier, Pro Plus, costs US$49.99 a month at its regular price.
- You want a yearly price for a single person, and Firefly's individual plans show monthly prices only.
The 5 Adobe Firefly alternatives
Ordered by fit to the reasons above: region edits by typed prompt first, then one set of terms across the models you use, then steady and yearly pricing.
1. Ideogram
Best for: Region edits with a typed prompt on an infinite canvas, plus readable lettering
How it differs from Adobe Firefly: Ideogram's Magic Fill works much like Generative Fill: select the region to edit, then enter a text prompt, and Extend handles outpainting. Precise Edit adds a focused instruction with optional masks. Ideogram says it claims no ownership of generated images for any purpose, and it shows yearly prices, such as Plus at $15 a month billed annually.
Price: Ideogram Plus at $20 a month; Pro tier at $60 (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Editing your own uploaded images on Canvas needs Plus or Pro, and below Plus your images are published to the community by default.
2. ChatGPT Images
Best for: Firefly users who would rather point at an area and explain the edit in chat
How it differs from Adobe Firefly: ChatGPT lets you select a specific area of an image and describe the change for that area, which covers much of what people use Generative Fill for. You can attach references, one for content and another for style or layout, and add Comment feedback to several images at once in Canvas view.
Price: Limited image creation at no cost; ChatGPT Plus $20 a month (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Plan pages describe image limits only in words such as "More image creation", with no numbers, and image generation with Thinking needs Plus or Pro.
3. Midjourney
Best for: Subscribers who want one family of in-house models and one set of commercial terms
How it differs from Adobe Firefly: Midjourney generates with its own models, V8.2 by default, so there is no split between in-house and partner outputs. Its General Commercial Terms let subscribers use images in just about any way, with Pro or Mega required for companies above $1,000,000 a year in revenue. The Editor offers Vary Region inpainting, and yearly billing saves 20%.
Price: Midjourney Basic $10 a month, or $96 a year paid upfront (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: No trial is offered on the website or in Discord, and Stealth Mode for private images needs Pro or Mega.
4. getimg.ai
Best for: Removing, swapping or restyling parts of photos by description across many models
How it differs from Adobe Firefly: getimg.ai's image editor asks you to describe the change, then finds, isolates and edits that part, with inpainting that rewrites one area and background swaps matched to the lighting. Every paid tier lists commercial rights, and yearly billing brings Core down to $26 a month.
Price: Entry $15 a month; Core $35 a month billed monthly (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: No free plan appears on its pricing page, plan credits do not roll over, and commercial use follows the CreativeML Open RAIL-M license.
5. ImageQuarry
Best for: Refining an image over many rounds of typed requests and going back when one misses
How it differs from Adobe Firefly: Firefly pairs Prompt to Edit with tools such as Generative Fill and Expand. ImageQuarry works through words: you select a version, say what to change and what to keep, and get a new version while the earlier ones remain. References can steer a material, color or light, and any version can start a new branch.
Price: $9 a month on Starter, $29 a month on Pro (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: It makes images only, every plan is paid, and ImageQuarry has no published Terms or rights policy yet, which matters if Adobe's commercial statement is why you chose Firefly.
Who should stay with Adobe Firefly
- You already work in Photoshop or Adobe Express, and a Firefly plan that bundles them saves paying for them separately.
- You want Adobe's statement that outputs from its own Firefly models are safe for commercial use, or you qualify for enterprise IP indemnification.
- You plan projects in Firefly Boards and want mood boards next to generation.
- You make video and audio as well as images and want them in one app with 30+ models.
How to try an alternative alongside Adobe Firefly
- Download finished images from Firefly and note which model made each one, since only Adobe's own Firefly models are covered by its commercial safety statement.
- Keep the source photos you edited: Ideogram, ChatGPT and getimg.ai each let you bring your own image to edit.
- Repeat one Generative Fill edit in the alternative by selecting the same region and typing the same prompt, then compare.
- Keep the Adobe part of your plan that gives you Photoshop or Express while you test, if you depend on those apps.
Does not carry over: Firefly Boards and any Photoshop or Adobe Express access in a bundled plan belong to Adobe's subscription and do not move with your images.
Adobe Firefly alternatives: questions
What is a free alternative to Adobe Firefly?
ChatGPT's free plan includes limited image creation, Gemini's free plan includes image generation and editing, Leonardo.Ai gives 150 fast tokens a day, and Ideogram gives eligible free accounts weekly credits, though its editing needs priority credits. Firefly's own free plan offers daily generations. ImageQuarry is sold only as paid plans.
Is there an alternative to Firefly's Generative Fill?
Yes. Ideogram's Magic Fill has you select a region and enter a text prompt, ChatGPT lets you select an area and describe the change, Midjourney's Editor offers Vary Region inpainting, and getimg.ai's inpainting rewrites one part of an image from a description.
Which alternatives have clear commercial terms like Firefly?
Adobe says outputs from its own Firefly models are safe for commercial use. Midjourney's General Commercial Terms let subscribers use images in just about any way, Ideogram says it claims no ownership of generated images and allows commercial use, and getimg.ai allows commercial use on all paid subscriptions under the CreativeML Open RAIL-M license.
What is cheaper than Firefly Pro?
Firefly Pro is US$19.99 a month. ChatGPT Go is $8 a month, Midjourney Basic is $10 a month billed monthly and getimg.ai Entry is $15 a month, while Firefly's own Standard tier costs just under $10. Each product counts usage differently, so a lower price does not mean more images.
Which Firefly alternatives have an API?
Ideogram calls image and video models through one API endpoint, getimg.ai sells an API that needs no subscription, and OpenAI offers an image generation API separately from ChatGPT plans. Midjourney lists no public API on the pages read.
How does ImageQuarry compare with Adobe Firefly?
Firefly is a broad Adobe app for images, video, audio and vectors, with Prompt to Edit, Generative Fill and Photoshop bundles. ImageQuarry is a workspace for images where each change you ask for in words becomes a new version, and you can add references and branch from any earlier version. It offers Starter at $9 and Pro at $29 a month.
