Photopea alternatives for layered photo editing and AI edits

Photopea is a browser-based layered photo editor that opens and saves PSD files, runs on your own device, and is paid for mainly by ads. Its AI tools remove backgrounds and replace part of an image from a text description. People look elsewhere because ads cover 5% to 15% of the screen, AI use beyond the Premium allowance needs your own funded Dezgo account, and no current Premium price is published. Adobe Photoshop fits people who need the original PSD workflow with Generative Fill, Pixlr fits a cheap browser editor without ads, Luminar Neo fits photographers, and Picsart fits mobile creators. ImageQuarry fits people who want to create and change images by describing them rather than by hand.

We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. Photopea and each alternative were compared on layers and file compatibility, AI editing, generating from a description, ads, platforms and price, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026.

What is Photopea?

Photopea calls itself a "Free Online Photo Editor" that "works right in your browser". It offers Layers, Masks, Layer Styles, Smart Objects, Adjustment Layers, Channels and Paths, and "fully supports" opening and saving PSD files, along with dozens of other formats. Files are processed on your device: "There are no uploads." Its AI features remove a background with one click or "replace any part of an image with a new content through a text description" (Magic Replace), and smart tools such as Spot Healing remove objects.

Photopea is a manual editor with a few AI tools; it does not mention generating an image from a blank canvas.

Photopea pricing

Photopea is monetized mainly through ads. Its launch post from September 17, 2016 priced Premium at 5 USD per month, but no current Premium price was found on a vendor page, as of October 2026. Prices as of October 2026, from photopea.com. Check the vendor for current pricing.

What Photopea does well

Professional layers in a browser

Photopea offers Layers, Masks, Layer Styles, Smart Objects, Adjustment Layers, Channels and Paths, plus Levels, Curves, Liquify and Puppet Warp.

PSD in and out

It opens and saves PSD files, imports formats from AI and PDF to Figma and camera RAW, and exports JPG, PNG, SVG and PDF.

Files stay on your device

Photopea says it runs on your CPU and GPU and files "never leave your device".

Usable at no cost

The editor is paid for mainly by ads, so you can use it without paying.

Clear rights to your work

Its terms say "All your work belongs to you" and you can sell work made in Photopea without sharing proceeds.

Where Photopea falls short

Ads on screen

On the free version, ads may cover between 5% and 15% of the screen.

AI use is capped

Premium accounts can use AI features hundreds of times a month; beyond that you connect your own funded Dezgo account with an API key.

No current Premium price

Premium is sold as a one-time payment for a period, but the page lists no prices, and the only figure found dates from 2016.

Few AI tools, no named model

The AI features are Remove BG and Magic Replace, no model is named, and generating from a blank canvas is not mentioned.

Browser only

Photopea runs in a browser on any device, with no app listed, and the operator is not named on the site.

Why people look for a Photopea alternative

  • You want to edit without ads, which cover 5% to 15% of Photopea's screen on the free version.
  • You use AI edits often and do not want to fund a separate Dezgo account once the Premium allowance runs out.
  • You want to generate a new image from a description, which Photopea's homepage does not mention.
  • You want to know the price before paying, and Photopea lists no current Premium price.

The 6 Photopea alternatives

Ordered for editing work first: how closely each one keeps Photopea's layered editing, then how well it answers the ads, AI allowance and price reasons. ImageQuarry is fourth: it answers the reason about generating and editing by description, but it has no layers or manual tools.

1. Adobe Photoshop

Best for: Designers who want Adobe's full desktop editor plus generative editing

How it differs from Photopea: Photoshop runs on desktop, web and mobile, and its Generative Fill adds a prompt-driven change as a Generative Layer for nondestructive editing. You can use Adobe's Firefly or partner models such as Nano Banana Pro and FLUX.2 pro, and the August 2026 release added editing images with natural language prompts.

Price: US$22.99 a month, annual plan billed monthly; 7-day free trial (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: There is no free Photoshop plan, the Photoshop plan includes 25 monthly generative credits, and the Generative Fill page contradicts itself about commercial use of content made in the app.

2. Pixlr

Best for: Browser editors who want no ads and named AI models for a few dollars

How it differs from Photopea: Pixlr is also a browser editor that works without an account, but its Plus plan is ad free and its AI goes further: Generative Fill, Generative Expand, an Instruct Editor that takes natural language and keeps up to 10 versions, and a text to image generator with named models. It also has iOS, Android and desktop apps.

Price: Plus is $2.49 a month on monthly billing; a free version without an account (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Plus includes 80 monthly AI credits, so heavy AI use needs Premium at $9.99 a month billed monthly.

3. Luminar Neo

Best for: Photographers who want layers, RAW and AI swaps without a subscription

How it differs from Photopea: Luminar Neo is a desktop photo editor with layers, masking, RAW support and non-destructive editing, sold for a one-time payment. GenSwap replaces a masked area from a short noun prompt, GenErase removes distractions, and it also works as a plug-in for Photoshop and Lightroom.

Price: Desktop Only $99.00 one-time (sale price); Luminar on Web free tier (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Generative tools are included for 1 year from purchase and then need a Luminar Prime renewal, and GenSwap prompts are English only.

4. ImageQuarry

Best for: Creating or reworking an image by describing it instead of editing layers by hand

How it differs from Photopea: Photopea gives you manual layers and masks, with Magic Replace for described changes to one area. ImageQuarry starts where Photopea does not: describe a new image or upload one, then ask for changes such as different lighting or an added object, and each request becomes a new version while the earlier ones stay.

Price: Starter $9 per month or Pro $29 per month (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: ImageQuarry has no layers, masks or manual retouching tools, publishes no output specifications, and every plan is paid.

5. Picsart

Best for: Mobile and social creators who want an editor and many AI models together

How it differs from Photopea: Picsart combines a photo and video editor with a generator offering 65 AI models, so you can generate an image and then edit it in the same place, which Photopea's homepage does not describe. It runs on web, iOS, Android and Windows, with 100 GB of cloud storage on Pro.

Price: Limited free generations daily; Pro $15 billed monthly (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Usage rights vary by AI model and plan, and its collaboration features are marked coming soon.

6. Fotor

Best for: Casual editors who want one-click tools and typed edits online

How it differs from Photopea: Fotor is an online editor that leans on AI rather than layers: 100+ built-in AI tools, Remove Object, Change Background and an image extender, plus edits you describe in plain text. It also generates images with models such as Nano Banana and GPT Image, and runs on web, iOS and Android.

Price: Fotor Basic free; paid plan prices load by script (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Fotor's main pricing page did not show its prices, and an older page lists conflicting annual amounts.

Who should stay with Photopea

  • You open and save PSD files without paying for Photoshop, and the ads do not bother you.
  • You want files processed on your own device with no uploads.
  • You edit by hand with layers, masks and curves, and use AI only for the occasional background removal or Magic Replace.
  • You run a school and the whitelabel mode from $450 a year fits your budget.

How to move work out of Photopea

  1. Save each project with File, Save as PSD to keep layers, masks and smart objects for Photoshop or another PSD editor.
  2. Use File, Export As for flat JPG, PNG, SVG or PDF copies, or Save for Web to pick the format and resolution.
  3. Check files opened from Google Drive, which Photopea saves back to their original location.
  4. Open one layered PSD in the alternative and confirm layer styles and smart objects survive before moving everything.

Does not carry over: Any Premium time already paid for, and a Dezgo API key set up in Photopea's preferences, stay with Photopea.

Photopea alternatives: questions

What is a free alternative to Photopea?

Pixlr's free version works without an account, Luminar on Web has a free tier, Fotor has a free Basic tier, and Picsart offers limited free generations a day, as of October 2026. Adobe Photoshop has a 7-day trial but no free plan. Every ImageQuarry plan is paid.

Is there a Photopea alternative without ads?

Pixlr Plus is ad free at $2.49 a month billed monthly. Photopea's own ads cover 5% to 15% of the screen on the free version, and schools can hide them with whitelabel mode from $450 a year.

Can I keep my layers if I leave Photopea?

Yes. Photopea's File, Save as PSD keeps the full document, including layers, and File, Export As gives flat JPG, PNG, SVG or PDF copies. Open one saved PSD in the alternative and check that layer styles and smart objects come through before moving everything.

Which alternative has more AI editing than Photopea?

Photoshop's Generative Fill and prompt editing, Pixlr's Generative Fill and Instruct Editor, and Luminar Neo's GenSwap and GenErase all go beyond Photopea's Remove BG and Magic Replace. ImageQuarry generates an image from a description and changes it by request, keeping each version.

How does ImageQuarry compare with Photopea?

Photopea is a manual layered editor. ImageQuarry has no layers: you describe an image or upload one, ask for changes in words, and branch from any earlier version. It has two plans, Starter at $9 and Pro at $29 monthly.

Create an image. Edit it with words. Keep refining.

Describe the edit instead of building it by hand

Upload the image, say what should change, and compare the versions before you download one.
