Midjourney alternatives for editing, privacy and API access
Midjourney is a subscription AI image and video generator used on midjourney.com and in Discord, with its own models (V8.2 is the default) and an Edit model that changes images from written instructions. People look for an alternative mainly because there is no trial on the website, private images need the Pro or Mega plan, and no public API is listed. Ideogram is the closest fit for private images at a lower price, Leonardo.Ai and Krea for many models plus an API, Adobe Firefly for Adobe workflows, and ChatGPT Images for editing in conversation. ImageQuarry fits people who want every edit kept as a version they can return to.
We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. Midjourney and each alternative were compared on editing in words, references, image visibility, developer access, platforms and price, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026.

What is Midjourney?
Midjourney sells four subscription tiers, Basic, Standard, Pro and Mega, and its docs state that "All Midjourney plans are subscriptions." You generate images with Midjourney's own models (V6 to V8.2, plus Niji for anime styles), then use the Edit model to "Make changes to an existing image using written instructions" or to combine up to 4 reference images. The website also has an Editor with inpainting, Pan, Zoom Out and brushes, and a Conversational Mode that helps you write prompts in everyday language.
Midjourney is a generator first: its Conversational Mode helps write prompts, while edits run through the separate Edit model and Editor.
Midjourney pricing
Fast GPU time per month is 3.3 hours on Basic, 15 on Standard, 30 on Pro and 60 on Mega; extra fast time is $4 an hour. Relax mode, with unlimited images, is on Standard and above. What Midjourney does well
Its own image models, updated often
Midjourney trains its own models, and V8.2 became the default on July 24, 2026. V8.1 added HD images that generate at 2K without upscaling.
Edit by describing the change
The Edit model changes an existing image from written instructions, can combine up to 4 reference images, and works on your own uploaded images as well as Midjourney's.
Fast exploration with Draft mode
Draft mode in V8.1 and V8.2 generates a batch of 24 images at 512 by 512 pixels, and Vary or Remix regenerates the ones you like at higher resolution.
Broad commercial terms once you subscribe
Midjourney's General Commercial Terms let subscribers use their images and videos "in just about any way you want", with Pro or Mega required for companies above $1,000,000 a year in gross revenue.
Where Midjourney falls short
No trial on the website
Midjourney says no free trial is available in Discord or on midjourney.com; only the niji · journey mobile app has a limited trial.
Private images cost $60 a month or more
Stealth Mode, which keeps images and videos private, is only on the Pro ($60 a month) and Mega ($120 a month) plans.
No public API listed
Midjourney's pages list the website, Discord and the niji · journey app, and no public API was found on the pages read on October 20, 2026.
Edit results do not work with Remix
The docs say Edit model results "are not currently compatible with Remix", and in V8.2 the Edit model replaced Omni Reference, Character Reference and Retexture.
Why people look for a Midjourney alternative
- You want to try a tool before paying. Midjourney has no trial on the website or in Discord, as of October 2026.
- You need private images without paying $60 a month for Midjourney Pro, since Stealth Mode is limited to the Pro and Mega tiers.
- You want to generate images from your own app or scripts, and Midjourney lists no public API.
- You want other model families, such as Ideogram for typography or Nano Banana, next to Midjourney's own models.
The 6 Midjourney alternatives
Ordered by how well each one answers the reasons above: a way to start before paying, private images at a lower price, and an API.
1. Ideogram
Best for: Posters, ads and layouts where readable text in the image matters
How it differs from Midjourney: Ideogram Plus includes private generation at $20 a month, where Midjourney needs its $60 Pro tier for Stealth Mode. Its Precise Edit takes a focused instruction with optional masks, and it sells an API and pay as you go credits, which Midjourney does not list.
Price: Plus $20 a month, or $15 a month billed annually (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Images are published to the community by default unless you are on Plus or Pro, and editing needs priority credits.
2. Leonardo.Ai
Best for: Creators who want many image models, mobile apps and an API in one account
How it differs from Midjourney: Leonardo.Ai offers a free plan with 150 fast tokens a day, which Midjourney's website does not. It runs models from several labs, including Ideogram, Nano Banana and its own Lucid and Phoenix, and has iOS and Android apps plus a pay as you go API.
Price: Free plan; Essential $12 a month (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Free plan creations are public, and on the free tier Leonardo.Ai holds rights to use the images you make.
3. Krea
Best for: People who want to switch between many image and video models in one place
How it differs from Midjourney: Krea puts its own Krea models next to third party models such as Flux, Ideogram, Nano Banana and GPT Image, so you can compare model families without separate accounts. It has a free plan of 100 units a day, a real-time canvas and a public API.
Price: Free plan; Basic $9 a month (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Compute units do not roll over, and the FAQ names only paid plans as including a commercial license.
4. Adobe Firefly
Best for: Designers already in Adobe apps who want outputs Adobe calls safe for commercial use
How it differs from Midjourney: Firefly's Prompt to Edit lets you add, remove or replace objects and backgrounds by typing the change, and Adobe states that outputs from its own Firefly models are safe for commercial use. It has free daily generations and plans that bundle Photoshop and Adobe Express.
Price: Free daily generations; Standard US$9.99 a month (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Adobe's commercial safety statement covers its own models, and you are responsible for checking content from partner models.
5. ChatGPT Images
Best for: People who already use ChatGPT and want to ask for edits in plain conversation
How it differs from Midjourney: ChatGPT generates and edits images inside the chat: you attach a reference, select an area and describe the change, or comment on one image in Canvas view. Midjourney's Conversational Mode helps write prompts, while ChatGPT applies the edit in the same conversation.
Price: Free plan with limited image creation; Plus $20 a month (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Image limits depend on your plan, and the image API is sold separately from ChatGPT plans.
6. ImageQuarry
Best for: People who refine one image over many rounds and want every version kept
How it differs from Midjourney: Midjourney's Edit model changes one image from written instructions. ImageQuarry is built around that loop: select a version, describe the change, and get a new version while earlier ones stay. You can branch from any earlier version, add references, and choose between four models, with Nano Banana 2.1 as the default.
Price: Starter $9 a month; Pro $29 a month (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Every plan is paid, and ImageQuarry publishes no output specifications, Terms or rights policy yet, so check those before client work.
Who should stay with Midjourney
- You like the look of Midjourney's own models and generate mostly from prompts, where its V8.2 default and Draft mode batches are its strengths.
- You already pay for Standard or above and use Relax mode for a high volume of images.
- You are a subscriber who wants broad commercial terms and works in Discord or on midjourney.com every day.
How to try an alternative alongside Midjourney
- List the prompts and reference images behind your best Midjourney results, since prompts written for Midjourney's parameters (such as --niji or --edit) need rewriting in plain language elsewhere.
- Download the finished images you want to keep editing from your Midjourney gallery before any plan change.
- Run the same three or four briefs in the alternative and compare the results side by side, including one edit you would normally make with Midjourney's Edit model.
- Keep Midjourney for the work its models do best while the new tool takes over the work that pushed you to look.
Does not carry over: Midjourney parameters, Moodboards, Personalization profiles and Style References are Midjourney features and do not transfer to other tools.

Several alternatives have a free tier, as of October 2026: Leonardo.Ai gives 150 fast tokens a day, Krea 100 units a day, Adobe Firefly free daily generations, Ideogram weekly credits for eligible accounts, and ChatGPT limited image creation on its free plan. Midjourney itself has no trial on the website. Every ImageQuarry plan is paid.
Which Midjourney alternative has an API?
Ideogram, Leonardo.Ai and Krea each sell API access, and OpenAI sells an image generation API separately from ChatGPT plans. Midjourney lists no public API on the pages read on October 20, 2026.
Can I make private images for less than Midjourney Pro?
Yes. Ideogram Plus includes private generation at $20 a month, and Leonardo.Ai makes creations private on its paid plans from $12 a month. Midjourney's Stealth Mode needs Pro at $60 or Mega at $120 a month.
Which alternative is closest to Midjourney's Edit model?
ChatGPT Images lets you select an area and describe the change, Adobe Firefly's Prompt to Edit adds, removes or replaces objects from a typed description, and Ideogram's Precise Edit takes a focused instruction with optional masks. In ImageQuarry, each change you describe becomes a new version, and earlier versions stay so you can go back or branch.
