NovelAI alternatives for anime-style image generation

NovelAI, made by Anlatan at novelai.net, is an anime image generator and AI storyteller; its images come from Anlatan's own NovelAI Diffusion models, with V5 the newest. People look elsewhere mainly because generated images are never stored on NovelAI's servers, so anything you do not save is gone, and Opus's "Unlimited" images apply only to single images up to 1024 by 1024 at 28 steps or fewer. Midjourney's Niji models suit people who want a kept gallery, Civitai and Tensor.Art suit people who want community anime models and LoRAs, and ComfyUI suits running models locally. ImageQuarry is a general image workspace and a weak fit for anime-specific work.

We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. NovelAI and each alternative were compared on anime models, how images are kept, editing tools, how you start, usage terms and price, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026.

What is NovelAI?

NovelAI's page title reads "AI Anime Image Generator & Storyteller", and Anlatan runs both sides under one subscription. Images come from its own NovelAI Diffusion models, built from scratch from V4 on, and V5 accepts natural sentences or tags, renders up to 750 characters of text and handles up to 22 characters in a scene. Editing runs through inpainting, Director Tools for details, clothing, lighting or pose, a built-in canvas, and Image2Image with a Strength setting.

This page compares NovelAI's anime image generator; its AI story writing is a separate job, and story-writing tools are not covered here.

NovelAI pricing

Subscriptions renew 30 days after payment, and no annual billing is stated. Opus's "Unlimited*" covers images up to 1024 by 1024 pixels and up to 28 steps, generated one at a time without a base image; with models above V4.5, going over the usage limit makes every image cost Anlas until the limit refills. Paid tiers get 20% off extra Anlas. Prices as of October 2026, from novelai.net. Check the vendor for current pricing.

What NovelAI does well

Anime models built in-house

NovelAI says its V4 and later image models were built completely from scratch, and V5 Curated and V5 Full both handle up to 22 characters per scene and full comic pages.

Tags or plain sentences

You can prompt with tags or let the model interpret natural sentences, and V5 renders up to 750 characters of text in the image.

Targeted edits with Director Tools

Inpainting changes selected areas, Director Tools adjust details, clothing, lighting or a character's pose, and a built-in canvas handles quick fixes; V5 also outputs transparent backgrounds.

No limits on commercial use

NovelAI's homepage says there are no limitations on commercial use of your AI anime art, and no extra tier is needed for it.

Encrypted prompts and phone access

Prompts are encrypted and images are not stored on its servers. The web app also works from a mobile browser without installing anything, and the docs include an API reference.

Where NovelAI falls short

Nothing is saved for you

Generated images are never stored on NovelAI's servers and exist only during your session unless you save them, so there is no cloud gallery to return to.

Opus "Unlimited" has conditions

Free-of-Anlas images must be single generations without a base image, at least Normal size and 28 steps or fewer, and on models above V4.5 going over the usage limit makes all images cost Anlas until it refills.

Anlas vanish when you cancel

From 31 days after the V5 release, Subscription Anlas reset to zero the moment a subscription ends, and you cannot buy more Anlas after cancelling.

One model family

Image generation runs on NovelAI's own NovelAI Diffusion models; no other model families are listed.

A short trial

The Paper trial gives 30 image generations to email-verified accounts, and NovelAI's FAQ says it is not a free AI image generator.

Why people look for a NovelAI alternative

  • You want past images kept in an online gallery, and NovelAI never stores generated images on its servers.
  • You generate in batches or from base images, which Opus's "Unlimited*" does not cover.
  • You pause subscriptions between projects, and NovelAI resets Subscription Anlas to zero when you cancel.
  • You want community checkpoints, LoRAs or other model families next to an anime model, and NovelAI runs only its own.
  • You want a longer start than 30 trial images before paying.

The 6 NovelAI alternatives

Ordered by fit for anime image work while answering the reasons above: a kept gallery with a dedicated anime model first, then community model hubs with daily allowances, then running models on your own machine. ImageQuarry has no anime-specific models, so it is last.

1. Midjourney

Best for: Illustrators who want a dedicated anime model and a gallery that keeps their work

How it differs from NovelAI: Midjourney offers Niji versions for anime styles next to its V8.2 default, and your images stay in its website gallery, with an Organize page and filters. Its Edit model changes an image from written instructions or combines up to 4 references, and the Editor adds inpainting and Zoom Out.

Price: Basic $10 a month billed monthly (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: There is no trial on the website, only a limited one in the niji · journey app, and Stealth Mode for private images needs Pro or Mega.

2. Civitai

Best for: Fans who want thousands of community models and LoRAs, with a daily allowance

How it differs from NovelAI: Civitai's generator runs SD 1.5, SDXL and Flux with community models, LoRAs and embeddings, so you can pick an anime checkpoint instead of one house model. You get some Buzz every 24 hours for opening the generator, and hosted Nano Banana takes edits written as plain instructions.

Price: Bronze $10 a month (10,000 Green Buzz) (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Images you do not post to your profile are kept for only 30 days, and inpainting is not mentioned in its generator guide.

Visit Civitai

3. Tensor.Art

Best for: People who run community anime checkpoints such as Illustrious and Anima online

How it differs from NovelAI: Tensor.Art hosts community checkpoints and LoRAs, with model cards tagged Illustrious and Anima, and its navigation includes Workflows, Train and a Library. A Design Agent Chat generates and edits designs, Smart Edit modifies images, and it has an iPhone and iPad app.

Price: 30-day Pro Plan $9.90 in the App Store (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Its prices disagree between the App Store and an older vendor notice, and daily membership credits cannot be accumulated.

Visit Tensor.Art

4. SeaArt

Best for: Phone users who want a community platform and editing by plain description

How it differs from NovelAI: SeaArt lets you describe the part you want to change in plain words, and accepts up to 6 references for editing or merging images. Free users get 130 Stamina a day, its apps are on iOS and Android, and it says results can be used commercially.

Price: Free with 130 Stamina a day; paid tiers billed annually (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Work is visible to others unless your plan includes Private Generation, and paid plan prices did not render on its pricing page.

Visit SeaArt

5. ComfyUI

Best for: People searching for a local NovelAI alternative who are happy to set things up

How it differs from NovelAI: ComfyUI runs open models, from SDXL to Flux.2 and Qwen Image, on your own computer and works fully offline, so there are no Anlas to budget. Outputs save to your own disk, and workflows and seeds can be recovered from supported images.

Price: No cost to install; GPL v3 (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: You need a capable GPU and must build node workflows, and the anime look depends on the community models you choose to download.

Visit ComfyUI

6. ImageQuarry

Best for: Non-anime projects, such as posters or concept art, that need a kept history of edits

How it differs from NovelAI: NovelAI keeps nothing after your session unless you save it. ImageQuarry keeps the prompt, references and every version in your projects and library, so you can come back to an image later and continue. Changes are asked for in words, and you can branch from an earlier version.

Price: Starter runs $9 a month and Pro $29 (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: ImageQuarry has no anime-specific models, tag prompting or Director-style pose tools, and every plan is paid.

Who should stay with NovelAI

  • You want NovelAI Diffusion V5's look, with multi-character scenes and full comic pages from one prompt.
  • You also write stories with NovelAI and want images and text under one subscription.
  • You prefer that images are not stored on the service's servers and that prompts are encrypted.
  • You sell or publish your anime art and want NovelAI's statement that there are no limits on commercial use.

How to try an alternative alongside NovelAI

  1. Download every image you want to keep during your session, since NovelAI does not store them on its servers.
  2. Save the prompts and tags behind your favorite results; other tools may prefer natural sentences, which V5 also accepts.
  3. Spend your Subscription Anlas before cancelling, because they reset to zero when the subscription ends.
  4. Run three of your usual prompts in the alternative with a similar anime model and compare characters, hands and text.
  5. Keep NovelAI for the scenes its V5 models handle well while the new tool covers the rest.

Does not carry over: Director Tools settings, NovelAI Diffusion model output styles and any remaining Anlas stay with NovelAI.

NovelAI alternatives: questions

Is there a free alternative to NovelAI for anime images?

SeaArt gives free users 130 Stamina a day, Civitai hands out Buzz every 24 hours for opening its generator, and ComfyUI is open source and runs on your own GPU. NovelAI's own Paper trial gives 30 images. Every ImageQuarry plan is paid.

Is there a local alternative to NovelAI?

Yes. ComfyUI runs open models offline on your own computer, and Fooocus is an offline SDXL app whose default models include an anime one, animaPencilXL, though Fooocus calls itself 100% non-commercial.

Which alternative keeps my images saved?

Midjourney keeps images in its website gallery with an Organize page, and Tensor.Art has a Library. Civitai keeps images you do not post for 30 days. ImageQuarry keeps every version with its prompts and references in projects and a library.

NovelAI or Midjourney Niji for anime?

NovelAI runs its own anime models built from scratch, starts at $10 a month, and states no limits on commercial use. Midjourney has Niji versions for anime, starts at $10 a month for Basic, and its Edit model takes written instructions; companies above $1,000,000 in yearly revenue need Pro or Mega.

Does NovelAI have an API?

NovelAI's docs include an API reference for scripting. Civitai also links an API and developer docs.

How does ImageQuarry compare with NovelAI?

ImageQuarry is a general image workspace rather than an anime generator. You describe an image or upload one, ask for changes in words, and keep each version in your projects.
