Lexica alternatives for editing what you generate

Lexica (lexica.art) is an AI image search engine and generator: you search a public gallery of prompts and images, then generate with its own Lexica Aperture model on a subscription. People look elsewhere mainly because none of Lexica's pages describe editing a generated image, and every image except those made on the Max plan appears in public search. ImageQuarry fits people who want to keep changing one image by describing each step. Ideogram suits text-heavy designs and private images from $20 a month, Midjourney suits its own look, and Krea and Leonardo.Ai suit anyone who wants a free start.

We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. Lexica and each alternative were compared on editing by describing a change, versions and organization, who can see your images, how you start and price, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026.

What is Lexica?

Lexica's site centers on search: a Search control, History and Likes pages, and a public API that returns 50 matches per query with each image's prompt, seed, model and dimensions, or finds similar images from a picture you pass in. The Generate page runs Lexica Aperture, and the license page says most images on Lexica were made with it. Paid plans add image uploads, custom aspect ratios and fast generations, with each prompt submission using four credits.

Lexica is a prompt gallery with a generator attached, not an editor: it lists no tool for changing an image after it is made.

Lexica pricing

Lexica shows these prices for yearly billing and says yearly plans save 20%; its monthly prices did not render in the fetched page and are not recorded. Extra fast generations cost $0.05 each, never expire and need an active plan. Prices as of October 2026, from lexica.art. Check the vendor for current pricing.

ProductPlanPriceIncludes
LexicaStarter$8 per month, billed annually1,000 fast generations a month, public images, personal commercial license
LexicaPro$24 per month, billed annually3,000 fast generations, slow generations with a daily cap, full commercial license
LexicaMax$48 per month, billed annually7,000 fast generations, private images, full commercial license

What Lexica does well

A searchable gallery of prompts

By default every image appears in Lexica search, and the Search API returns the prompt, seed, model and size behind each result, which makes Lexica a reference library for prompt ideas.

Reverse image search

Passing an image URL to the API returns visually similar images from the gallery, a job most generators do not list.

Commercial rights that outlast the plan

Images made on a paid plan can be used commercially "forever, even if you later cancel", with Pro covering companies of 2 to 5 people and Max larger ones.

Soft limits and fair billing

Pro and Max move you to a slow queue once fast generations run out instead of stopping you, upgrades are prorated, and you keep access until the end of the period after cancelling.

Where Lexica falls short

No editing after generation

No instruction editing, inpainting or outpainting is described on any Lexica page reviewed; plans list image uploads and custom aspect ratios only.

Public by default, with a broad license

Only images created on the Max plan are private, and Lexica's Terms grant it a "perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive, sublicensable" license to the images and prompts you create.

No projects or version history

Organization is limited to History and Likes pages, and support runs through Lexica's Discord.

Unclear free option

The account page says "there is currently no free plan", while the license page refers to images made "while on the free plan".

Monthly prices not shown

A monthly billing toggle exists, but monthly prices were not present in the page, so only the yearly figures can be quoted. Lexica also does not accept PayPal.

Why people look for a Lexica alternative

  • You want to change an image after generating it, by describing the change, and Lexica lists no editing tools.
  • You want your images kept out of a public gallery without paying for Max at $48 a month billed annually.
  • You want projects or a version history to come back to, beyond Lexica's History and Likes pages.
  • You want a clear way to start before paying, and Lexica's pages disagree on whether a free plan exists.

The 5 Lexica alternatives

Ordered by how closely each matches the first reason above (changing a generated image by describing it, while keeping earlier results to go back to), then by private images and a way to start before paying.

1. ImageQuarry

Best for: Turning one generated image into a finished piece through a run of described edits

How it differs from Lexica: Lexica stops at generation. In ImageQuarry, the first image is only the start: you select a version, ask for a change such as warmer light or a new background, and get a new version while the earlier ones stay. You can branch from any of them and keep the work in projects.

Price: From $9 a month (Starter) (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: There is no gallery to search for prompt ideas, no plan you can start without paying, and no published Terms or rights policy yet.

2. Ideogram

Best for: Designs with readable text, kept private for $20 a month

How it differs from Lexica: Ideogram lets you work from an existing image and describe a change with Precise Edit, and its Studio works through canvas versions. Plus, at $20 a month, includes private generation, where Lexica needs Max for private images.

Price: Plus at $20 per month, monthly billing (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Images are published by default below Plus, and editing features need priority credits rather than the slow queue.

3. Midjourney

Best for: Artists who like Midjourney's own look and want to edit by instruction

How it differs from Lexica: Midjourney's Edit model makes changes to an existing image from written instructions and can combine up to 4 reference images, which Lexica's pages do not offer. Like Lexica, it runs on its own models, with V8.2 as the default.

Price: Basic $10 a month, billed monthly (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: There is no trial on the website, and Stealth Mode for private images needs the Pro ($60) or Mega ($120) plan.

4. Krea

Best for: Explorers who want many models, typed edits and a no-card free plan

How it differs from Lexica: Krea's homepage offers "Edit by typing" and an Agent that iterates across models, and it lists Ideogram, Nano Banana, Flux and its own Krea models in one place. Its free plan gives 100 units a day with no credit card, a clearer start than Lexica's conflicting free plan pages.

Price: Basic $9/month after a free plan (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Monthly units on Basic, Pro and Max expire at the end of each cycle, and the commercial license is only named for paid plans.

5. Leonardo.Ai

Best for: Creators who want private images cheaply plus mobile apps

How it differs from Lexica: Leonardo.Ai makes creations private on its Essential plan at $12 a month and offers a free plan with 150 fast tokens a day. It runs models from several labs and its own Lucid and Phoenix models, with personal collections for organizing.

Price: Essential $12 monthly (free plan available) (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Its pages describe editing that preserves characters and composition but do not spell out editing by describing a change, and free creations are public.

Who should stay with Lexica

  • You mainly use Lexica to search other people's prompts, or call its Search API for prompt, seed and model data.
  • You need reverse image search across a large AI image gallery.
  • You generate in volume at yearly prices from $8 a month and do not need to edit images afterwards.
  • You want commercial rights that continue after you cancel, as Lexica's license page promises for paid-plan images.

How to try an alternative alongside Lexica

  1. Save the prompts and seeds behind your favorite Lexica images; the Search API returns them for any image in the gallery.
  2. Download the images you plan to keep editing elsewhere, and keep any invoices you need from the account page.
  3. Pick one image you would have regenerated many times in Lexica and instead edit it step by step in the alternative.
  4. If privacy was the reason, check which plan in the new tool keeps images unpublished before you upload anything.

Does not carry over: Your Likes, History and any Lexica Aperture specific prompt habits stay in Lexica, and images you already made remain in its public search unless they were created on Max.

Lexica alternatives: questions

Is there a free Lexica alternative?

Krea gives 100 units a day with no credit card, and Leonardo.Ai 150 fast tokens a day on its free plan, as of October 2026. Ideogram gives weekly credits to eligible free accounts. Lexica's own pages disagree on whether it has a free plan. Every ImageQuarry plan is paid.

Which Lexica alternative lets me edit an image I generated?

Midjourney's Edit model, Ideogram's Precise Edit and Krea's edit by typing all change an existing image from a written description. In ImageQuarry each described change becomes a new version, and earlier versions stay. Lexica describes no editing tools.

How can I keep my images private for less than Lexica Max?

Leonardo.Ai's Essential plan includes private creations at $12 a month, and Ideogram Plus includes private generation at $20 a month. Lexica Max is $48 a month billed annually.

Is there an alternative to Lexica's search API?

Lexica's prompt search API is unusual. Among the alternatives here, Krea and Leonardo.Ai sell APIs for generating images, not for searching a prompt gallery.

How does ImageQuarry differ from Lexica?

Lexica is built for finding prompts and generating new images. ImageQuarry is built for what comes after the first image: asking for changes in words, keeping each version with its prompt and references, and organizing the results in projects.

Create an image. Edit it with words. Keep refining.

Keep going after the first image

Describe what you want, then keep asking for changes and pick the version worth keeping from the history of the image.
