Artbreeder alternatives for artists who blend images and want typed edits

Artbreeder is a web suite for mixing images and text into new images, with tools such as Splicer, Mixer, Composer, Prompter, Collager and Outpainter; it began as Ganbreeder and runs on GAN models plus SDXL-based credits. The job it shares with other tools is blending references and prompts into characters, portraits and concept art. People look elsewhere because the free plan has 3 credits a month, every image is released under CC0, and no Artbreeder page describes editing by typing a change. Krea and OpenArt suit artists who want daily free use and character tools, and Ideogram suits text-heavy art. ImageQuarry fits artists who want to describe each change and branch from earlier versions.

We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. Artbreeder and each alternative were compared on how you start, editing in words, references and characters, usage terms, platforms and price, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026.

What is Artbreeder?

Artbreeder's Create page lists a family of mixing tools: Splicer2 to "Mix, branch and edit images", Mixer2 to build complex prompts from images, Prompter to turn text into images, Composer to "Mix images and text with precision", and Collager to assemble shapes, images and text. Outpainter expands an image, Animator is Pro only, and Worlds builds a story world from any image. The about page credits BigGAN and StyleGAN models, and the pricing page measures credits in SDXL images.

Artbreeder blends images and prompts into new images; its pages do not describe editing one image by writing an instruction.

Artbreeder pricing

What Artbreeder does well

Mixing tools few others offer

Splicer mixes images and edits their genes to make portraits, Mixer2 turns several images into one complex prompt, and Composer mixes images and text with precision, all from one Create page.

Branching built into Splicer2

Artbreeder describes Splicer2 as a place to mix, branch and edit images, and Worlds turns any image into a setting for world-building and storytelling.

Images anyone can reuse

Artbreeder's support page says all images are public domain under CC0 and may be used for commercial purposes, so artists can reuse each other's results.

Low prices per credit on yearly plans

Champion Breeder billed yearly works out to $0.04 a credit, and Pro plans add unlimited image generation in Composer.

Where Artbreeder falls short

Three credits a month on the Free plan

The pricing page's plan data gives the Free plan 3 credits a month at a price of 0.

Everything you make is released under CC0

The Terms of Use, last updated November 20, 2019, say you license any image you create under CC0, which effectively places it in the public domain. A paid private mode keeps images unseen.

No typed instructions for edits

Researchers found no Artbreeder page that describes editing an image by typing a change, as of October 2026.

Web only, with limited uploads

Only the website was found, with no app or API page, and the support page says uploads to the general category are not currently available.

Why people look for a Artbreeder alternative

  • Three free credits a month runs out fast, and you want a free allowance that lets you keep experimenting.
  • You want to say what should change in an image, and Artbreeder's pages describe mixing and splicing rather than typed edit instructions.
  • You do not want your work released into the public domain, which Artbreeder's 2019 Terms require for every image.
  • You want an app, an API or open uploads, and only the website was found, with general uploads paused.

The 6 Artbreeder alternatives

Ordered by how many of the four reasons each one answers (free allowance, typed edits, terms other than CC0, apps or API), with ties going to the tool closest to Artbreeder's mixing of references and characters.

1. Krea

Best for: Artists who want to train a style or character from their own images and keep experimenting daily

How it differs from Artbreeder: Where Artbreeder breeds new images from mixes, Krea lets you train a LoRA on up to 50 of your own images to personalize characters, styles or objects, even on the Free plan. It adds an Edit by typing tile, an Agent that iterates across models, 100 free units a day and a public API.

Price: Free plan of 100 units daily; Basic $9 a month (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Units on Basic, Pro and Max do not roll over to the next month, and no phone app was found on Krea's pages.

2. OpenArt

Best for: Storytellers who build recurring characters and worlds, much like Artbreeder's Worlds

How it differs from Artbreeder: OpenArt has a character builder that saves a character from reference images or a text brief and reuses it by tag, plus 3D OpenArt Worlds, which echoes Artbreeder's Worlds. Its Chat Mode creates from conversation, the trial plan gives daily credits, and the homepage FAQ says you fully own what you create.

Price: Trial plan with daily credits; Starter $14 per month (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: The pricing page shows commercial use rights only from Plus, which conflicts with the FAQ, and the homepage puts video ahead of images.

3. Ideogram

Best for: Artists who mix images into posters, covers or cards with readable lettering

How it differs from Artbreeder: Ideogram has an image mode that combines visual references with an edit instruction, close to Artbreeder's Composer but driven by words, and Precise Edit takes a focused instruction with optional masks. Ideogram says it does not claim ownership of your images and you may use them for any purpose, and it sells API access.

Price: Weekly credits for eligible free accounts; Plus is $20 monthly (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Images are published to the community unless you pay for Plus or Pro, and editing is not available in the slow queue.

4. Leonardo.Ai

Best for: Artists who want to train custom models and work across the web, phones and an API

How it differs from Artbreeder: Leonardo.Ai lets you fine-tune your own models from a small set of images, typically 10 to 20, and paid plans accept up to 6 image guidance references. Its Free plan grants 150 fast tokens a day, against Artbreeder's 3 credits a month, and it has iOS and Android apps and an API.

Price: Essential plan $12 a month, after a no-cost daily tier (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Leonardo.Ai holds rights to reuse free-tier images, and its pages fetched for this comparison never describe typing a change.

5. ImageQuarry

Best for: Artists who liked branching in Splicer and want to steer each branch with words

How it differs from Artbreeder: Artbreeder mixes images and prompts into new results. In ImageQuarry you start from a description or an upload, add references that show a material, palette, light or shape, and ask for each change in words. Every request becomes a new version, and you can branch from any earlier one to follow two directions at once.

Price: Starter $9, Pro $29, billed each month (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Every plan is paid, there are no gene sliders or splicing tools, and ImageQuarry has no published Terms or rights policy yet.

6. Midjourney

Best for: Concept artists who want a distinctive house style and combine several references

How it differs from Artbreeder: Midjourney's Edit model generates new images from up to 4 reference images, which covers much of what Artbreeder users do with Mixer, and it also changes an existing image from written instructions. Its General Commercial Terms let subscribers use images in just about any way they want.

Price: Basic $10 a month; no trial on the website (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: There is no trial on midjourney.com or Discord, private images need the $60 Pro plan, and no public API was found.

Who should stay with Artbreeder

  • You enjoy breeding images by mixing parents and adjusting genes in Splicer, a way of working the other tools here do not describe.
  • You want your images in the public domain under CC0 so others can build on them, and that suits your projects.
  • You build worlds and stories from images with Worlds and Composer, and a yearly Champion Breeder plan keeps the cost per credit low.

How to try an alternative alongside Artbreeder

  1. Download the Artbreeder images you want to keep developing, at the higher resolution paid plans offer if you have one.
  2. Note the parent images and text you mixed for each favorite, since the same blend has to be rebuilt as references and a written prompt elsewhere.
  3. In the alternative, upload two or three of those parents as references and describe the result you want in plain words.
  4. Ask for one specific change to the result, such as new lighting or a different background, to see how typed edits compare with splicing.
  5. Keep Artbreeder for gene-style mixing while the new tool handles edits you would rather describe.

Does not carry over: Splicer genes, Mixer recipes and Worlds are Artbreeder features, and your images there stay CC0 whatever tool you use next.
