IMAGE STYLES

Give any idea the handmade look of clay animation

Claymation, or clay animation, films characters and sets sculpted from plasticine one frame at a time. A still image in that style is recognisable from rounded, slightly lumpy shapes, visible fingerprints and tool marks, a soft matte surface and tiny sets lit like a tabletop. In ImageQuarry you describe the character or scene and ask for that handmade finish, then request specific changes on the version you like, such as chunkier shapes or a warmer key light, with every change saved as a new version.

Ask for visible thumbprints, matte surfaces and a miniature set; keep shapes simple.

How to create a claymation style image

  1. 01

Describe the character and the set

Write the subject and the miniature world around it: "a claymation style fox baker in a tiny kitchen, rounded shapes, thumbprints on the clay, felt background". The words plasticine, miniature set and handmade push the look.

  2. 02

Pick the version with the best shapes

Clay characters read through their silhouettes and big expressive eyes. Choose the version with the most appealing form before fixing color.

  3. 03

    Refine the material and light

Ask for "more visible fingerprints", "less shine on the clay", or "a soft key light from the left like a tabletop studio". Each request builds on the version you selected.

  4. 04

Compare and keep the one with charm

Put two or three versions next to each other and download the one with the most personality.

Claymation requests to start from

Adapt these; each asks for a version you then review.

Mascot character

Clay mascots feel friendly and tactile, which suits children's brands and cafes.

Tiny diorama

Miniature sets with props sell the stop-motion feel.

Food scene

Clay food is a popular playful subject.

Explainer still

Clay characters can illustrate a step in a guide without feeling technical.

Seasonal card art

Holiday cards suit the handmade texture.

What makes the claymation look convincing

Imperfection is the point

Fingerprints, slight asymmetry and tool marks signal that something was shaped by hand. Perfectly smooth surfaces read as 3D rendering instead.

Matte, not glossy

Plasticine has a soft sheen at most. Ask to reduce reflections if a version looks like plastic toys.

Small-world lighting

Stop-motion sets are lit with studio lamps close to the scene, so shadows are soft and the background often has fabric or painted card.

Simple shapes, big eyes

Clay characters are built from a few rounded forms; too much detail breaks the effect.

Ask for a change, keep the earlier one

You select a version and ask for a specific change in words, and each change produces a new version while earlier versions are preserved.

Variations for options

Generate variations of an image to explore directions, such as three colorways for the same clay character.

What is the claymation style?

Claymation is stop-motion animation made with malleable clay figures moved slightly between photographed frames. As an image style it means figures and sets that look sculpted from plasticine, with soft forms, matte surfaces and visible handwork.

It is not the same as smooth 3D character rendering, which has clean surfaces and digital lighting. Felt and paper stop-motion are related handmade looks with different materials.

Claymation style questions

Can ImageQuarry make claymation style pictures?

Yes. Describe the character and set and ask for a claymation look; ImageQuarry generates it from your description. Then ask for changes on the version you like.

How do I make it look less like plastic?

Ask for a matte clay surface with visible fingerprints and fewer reflections. Compare the new version with the earlier one to see which reads more handmade.

Can I turn a photo of my dog into a clay figure?

Start from the uploaded photo and describe the clay version you want. Review each new version to see how much of your dog's features it kept.

Can I use a reference for the clay colors?

Add an image with the colors or textures you want as a reference. For clay looks, references guide the result; review each version to see how closely it follows them.

Will these work as animation frames?

They are still images. Each version is kept, and you can branch from an earlier one to try a new pose, but plan animation in a dedicated tool.

Where do my clay images live?

In the workspace, together with the prompts and changes that made them, organized in projects and a library you can come back to.

Create an image. Edit it with words. Keep refining.

Sculpt your idea in words first

Describe the character and its tiny world, then shape the clay look one request at a time.
