IMAGE STYLES
Create low poly art from faceted, flat-shaded shapes
Low poly art builds objects from a small number of visible polygons, usually triangles, each shaded in one flat tone. It began as a technical limit in early 3D games and became a style of its own for landscapes, animals, wallpapers and game assets because it is clean, readable and easy on the eye. In ImageQuarry you describe the subject and how faceted it should be, then ask for changes on the version you like, such as larger facets or a sunset palette, with each change saved as its own version.
Say how faceted, how flat the shading and how limited the palette should be.

How to create a low poly image
- 01
Describe subject and faceting
Be explicit: "a low poly fox sitting on a rock, large flat-shaded triangles, no textures, soft gradient background in teal and orange". Facet size controls how abstract it looks.
- 02
Choose the cleanest geometry
Pick the version where the facets follow the form; random noise triangles weaken it.
- 03
Adjust facets, light and palette
Ask for "fewer, larger polygons", "light from the upper right so the faces have three tones", or "a pastel sunset palette". Each request builds on the selected version.
- 04
Compare and keep
Compare versions side by side and download the one with the clearest form.
Low poly requests to start from
Each request produces a version you review.
Mountain landscape
Low poly peaks and lakes make calm wallpapers.
Animal portrait
Faceted animal heads are a popular print subject.
Game island
Simple islands as game or app art.
Abstract background
Triangle meshes for slides and websites.
Vehicle
Clean silhouettes for icons and illustrations.
What makes low poly work
Few, visible polygons
The charm is in seeing the facets. Too many small triangles drift back toward smooth 3D.
Flat shading
Each face gets one tone, so light direction must be consistent for the form to read.
Limited palette
Gradients between faces of a few colors look intentional; full textures break the style.
Silhouette first
Low poly simplifies details away, so the outline has to carry the subject.
Ask for changes in words
You select a version and ask for a specific change, such as larger facets, and each change produces a new version.
Try another model
You can choose a different model when you want a different result for the same request, then compare.
Low poly controls and request wording
| Control | Effect | Request wording |
|---|---|---|
| Facet size | Abstract versus detailed | "Large triangles, about 40 visible faces" |
| Shading | Clarity of form | "Flat shading, one tone per face" |
| Light direction | Readable volume | "Light from the upper left" |
| Palette | Mood | "Pastel sunset palette, no textures" |
| Background | Use in layouts | "Plain gradient background, subject centered" |
| Outline | Graphic punch | "No outlines" or "thin dark edges" |
What is low poly art?
Low poly art depicts subjects using a relatively small number of polygons, typically shown with flat shading so each facet is visible. It originates in real-time 3D graphics, where polygon counts were once strictly limited.
Isometric art is about a fixed viewing angle, not facets; papercraft looks similar but is made from folded paper.
Low poly style questions
Can ImageQuarry create low poly images?
Yes. Describe the subject and the faceted look you want and ImageQuarry generates it. Then refine the version you like.
Is the result a 3D model?
No, it is an image in a low poly style. If you need a mesh, use the image as a concept for a 3D tool.
How do I make it more abstract?
Ask for fewer, larger polygons on the version you have and compare it with the previous one.
Can I turn a photo into low poly art?
Start from the uploaded photo and ask for a low poly version. The photo to low poly guide covers it in more depth.
Can I keep both a warm and a cool palette?
Yes. Branch from the same version and try both, then compare.
Can I organize a set of low poly animals?
Keep them in a project; finished work settles into named collections with their prompts and versions.
Create an image. Edit it with words. Keep refining.
Facet your idea into shape
Describe the subject and the facets, then adjust light and palette one change at a time.
