Question

Why is AI image generation expensive to run?

Every AI image runs a very large model on specialized hardware, paid for on each request. Bigger images and some models cost more. That is why most tools meter usage with credits or plans.

An image model does a large amount of computation for every picture it makes. The hardware that runs it is costly to buy or rent, and it is busy for the length of each request.

You can see the effect in public developer prices. Google's Gemini pricing lists a 4K image at more than three times the price of a 1K image from the same model, and prices its models differently from each other.

That is why consumer tools limit usage with credits or time-based plans instead of offering endless generation. Midjourney, for example, sells extra Fast GPU time by the hour.

The practical answer for buyers: pick a plan that matches how many images and edits you really make in a month.
