Question

Do higher-resolution AI images cost more?

Often, yes. Google's Gemini API lists Nano Banana 2.1 at $0.0336 for a 1K image and $0.113 for a 4K image, because larger outputs take more compute.

Image models bill output by tokens or by image, and a larger image needs more of both. The difference can be large: in Google's price list, a 4K image from Nano Banana 2.1 costs more than three times a 1K image.

Not every model scales the same way. Google lists Nano Banana Pro at one price for 1K and 2K ($0.134) and a higher price for 4K ($0.24).

Some apps pass this through. Adobe says the credit cost of its premium features depends on the model, the output and the file size.

A practical rule: work at the size you need to judge the image, and make the largest version only for the final file. Check what resolution you need to print an image to know which size the final file needs.
