Question

What is outpainting?

Outpainting is extending an image beyond its original edges with AI. The model adds new content around the picture that continues its scene, light and style, so a square photo can become a wide banner or a tall Story image. The original area is kept, and the new area is generated.

OpenAI introduced the term for DALL·E in 2022, describing it as extending an image past its borders with content that matches the original. Adobe's Generative Expand in Photoshop does the same job: you enlarge the canvas and the new space is filled, with or without a prompt.

Outpainting is the opposite direction from inpainting, which fills an area inside the frame. It is a common way to change an aspect ratio without cropping the subject.

Create an image. Edit it with words. Keep refining.

Check the new edges

Before you use an extended image, look closely at where the original ends and the new area begins: repeated textures and bent lines show there first.
