Question

What is a 4:5 aspect ratio used for?

4:5 is a slightly tall portrait shape. It is the recommended feed shape for Facebook and Instagram image ads, at 1440 x 1800 pixels, one of LinkedIn's recommended ad ratios, and the shape of 8 x 10 inch and 16 x 20 inch prints.

Because it is taller than square but not full screen, 4:5 takes up more of a phone feed than a square image while still showing as a normal post rather than a full-screen one.

1080 x 1350 and 1440 x 1800 pixels are both 4:5. At 300 pixels per inch, an 8 x 10 inch print needs 2400 x 3000 pixels, which is also 4:5.

A 4:5 composition crops easily to square, so it is a practical shape when one image has to serve several channels.
