Question

Can AI edit an existing image?

Yes. Image models that accept a picture can edit it from a written instruction: add, remove or change objects, swap the background, or change the color. Google and OpenAI both document this kind of editing for their image models.

Editing keeps far more of the original than generating a new image. Google says its image models aim to match the original image's style, lighting and perspective when they add an element.

It is not a pixel-level copy. Areas you did not ask to change can shift slightly, so compare the result with the original. See Why does AI change my whole image when I ask for one change?.

In ImageQuarry you can start from an uploaded image, describe the change, and get a new version while the original stays in place.
