Runway AI alternatives for image generation and editing
Runway, the AI video tool at runway.com (formerly runwayml.com), is a cloud creative platform for generating and editing video, images and audio, and its product page leads with video generation. People who mostly make images look elsewhere because typed editing is shown on video takes, the free plan is 125 one-time credits, and Standard and Pro credits do not roll over. Krea fits people who want images and video with a daily free allowance, Kling AI and Luma fit video makers who also edit stills in words, and Pika and Higgsfield fit social video work. ImageQuarry fits people whose work is still images refined over many rounds, with each change kept as a version.
We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. Runway and each alternative were compared on image generation, editing in words, motion work next to stills, how you start, usage rules and platforms, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026.

What is Runway?
Runway describes Runway Creative as "An all-in-one cloud-based creative platform" to generate and edit video, images and audio in one workspace. The company now frames itself around three platforms, Creative, Dev and Robotics. For images it prices Gen-4 Image, Gen-4 Image Turbo and two Nano Banana Pro models, and lists Nano Banana 2.1, Seedream 5.0 and FLUX.3. Image apps include Change Image Style and Reshoot Product, and Runway Agent takes plain language direction for social posts and image ads.
This page is about Runway the AI creative software company (runway.com), not airport runways or fashion runway shows.
Runway pricing
Credits are shared between video and images. Gen-4 Image (1080p) costs 8 credits an image, Gen-4 Image Turbo 2, and Nano Banana Pro (2K) 20. Extra credits come in packs of at least 1,000 and never expire, while credits on Standard and Pro do not roll over at month end. Prices as of October 2026, from runway.com. Check the vendor for current pricing.

What Runway does well
Video, images and audio in one workspace
Runway Creative puts generation and editing of video, images and audio in one place, and node-based Workflows chain several models, modalities and steps together.
A mix of its own and outside image models
The pricing page lists Gen-4 Image at 1080p and Gen-4 Image Turbo next to Nano Banana Pro models at 2K, and the product page adds Nano Banana 2.1, Seedream 5.0 and FLUX.3.
Edits by telling the model what you want
On video, Runway says you can change lighting, restyle a subject or add and remove elements "just by telling the model what you're looking for". For stills, Reshoot Product transforms a product shot after you upload it and describe the change.
An agent for social posts and ads
Runway Agent lets you "Direct every edit in plain language" and makes social posts and image ads, and Brand Kits hold logos, colors and style references.
Apps, an API and editor plugins
Runway runs on the web, iPhone and Android, and offers a developer API (Runway Dev), Runway MCP, a ChatGPT plugin and plugins for Premiere Pro and After Effects.
Where Runway falls short
Built around video first
The product page headline is "A new frontier for video generation.", the Standard plan is pitched "For curious creators trying AI video", and its examples of typed edits are shown on video.
The free plan is a one-time allowance
Runway's free plan gives 125 credits once, not each month, with a selection of models to test concepts.
Credits expire each month on most tiers
Credits on Runway Standard and Runway Pro do not roll over, and only Max carries credits over, for one month.
Caps on the number of projects
Projects are capped at 3 on Standard, 5 on Pro and 10 on Max, according to the pricing page.
Why people look for a Runway alternative
- Your work is mostly still images, and Runway's product page and plans are framed around AI video.
- You want to edit images by describing the change, and Runway shows typed editing mainly on video, with image edits through apps like Change Image Style and Reshoot Product.
- You want a free allowance that renews, and Runway's free plan is 125 credits once.
- You make images in bursts and lose unused credits, since Standard and Pro credits do not roll over.
- You keep many image projects going at once, and Standard allows up to 3.
The 6 Runway alternatives
Ordered by how many of the reasons above each one answers while still covering the video work Runway does. ImageQuarry answers the image editing reasons best but makes no video, so it sits in the middle, ahead of the two tools whose image editing is described least.
1. Krea
Best for: People who want images and video side by side with a daily free allowance
How it differs from Runway: Krea's model list includes Runway Gen-4 Image as well as Krea 3, Nano Banana, Ideogram and GPT Image, so you can keep a Runway look while switching suites. Its homepage offers "Edit by typing" on any image, and the free plan renews at 100 units a day instead of a one-time grant.
Price: Basic $9 a month billed monthly; free plan of 100 units a day (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Compute units on Basic, Pro and Max do not roll over, and no iOS or Android app was found on its pages.
2. Kling AI
Best for: Video makers who also want to edit stills with typed instructions
How it differs from Runway: Kling is a video-first studio too, but its image side is spelled out: IMAGE 3.0 supports local re-editing with natural-language instructions and features from up to 10 reference images. The AI Photo Editor asks you to explain what should change and what should stay the same.
Price: Standard $6.99 for the first month, then $8.8 a month (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Kling's Basic tier costs nothing but includes no credits each month, its output is not for commercial use, and no annual prices appear on the official pages read.
3. Luma
Best for: Creative professionals who want an agent to carry a project across video and images
How it differs from Runway: Luma's editing is prompt-based, and its docs say to "describe the change in natural language", with up to 8 reference images for an edit on its Uni-1 models. Its creative agents plan, generate and refine across video, image, audio and text while keeping context from one stage to the next.
Price: Plus $30 a month billed monthly (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: No free plan is listed on the pricing page (another Luma page mentions trial credits), and there is no Android app mentioned.
4. ImageQuarry
Best for: Still-image work where one picture goes through many described changes
How it differs from Runway: Runway shows its describe-the-change editing mostly on video takes, and handles stills through apps such as Change Image Style and Reshoot Product. ImageQuarry is only about images: you select a version, ask for new lighting or a different background, and the result is added as another version beside the earlier ones. Projects and a library keep prompts, references and versions together, and you can branch from any earlier step.
Price: Starter at $9 a month or Pro at $29 a month (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: ImageQuarry makes still images, not video or audio, so it cannot replace Runway for motion work, and every plan is paid.
5. Pika
Best for: Short social video makers who want to steer images with many references
How it differs from Runway: Pika's Image Studio lets you attach up to 16 references for subject, setting, style or product and @mention each one in the prompt, and it lets you switch between GPT Image 2.5, Nano Banana 2.1 and Seedream models. Edit Image swaps, removes or restyles parts of an image, though the homepage does not say whether that works from typed instructions.
Price: Starter $10 a month billed monthly (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Pika's no-cost tier includes no credits each month, and its $10 entry tier has no commercial license, which starts with Creator at $35 a month.
6. Higgsfield
Best for: Ad and influencer content creators who want many video and image models in one suite
How it differs from Runway: Higgsfield hosts image models such as Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image, Seedream and FLUX next to its video tools, with Ads Studio and AI Influencer sections. For edits you brush over an area with Nano Banana Pro Inpaint, and Soul ID keeps a character consistent across generations.
Price: Starter $15 a month, per Higgsfield's blog (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Free accounts get no credits and carry a watermark, and Higgsfield says it may use content to train its models.
Who should stay with Runway
- Video is your main output, and you want generation, restyling and relighting of takes in the same place as your stills.
- You edit in Premiere Pro or After Effects and use Runway's plugins there, or build on the Runway Dev API.
- You need Max plan output such as HDR, ProRes or image sequences for production work.
- You use Runway Agent and Brand Kits to turn brand assets into social posts and image ads.
How to try an alternative alongside Runway
- Download the images and videos you want to keep from your Runway assets, and note which model made each one (Gen-4 Image, Nano Banana Pro or another).
- Copy your Brand Kit logos, colors and style reference images into a folder, since you will upload them again as references elsewhere.
- Pick three image tasks you do often, such as a product reshoot or a style change, and run them in the new tool with the same source images.
- Use up the Runway credits you have already paid for this month before switching, because they do not roll over.
- Keep Runway for video while you decide whether the new tool covers your image work.
Does not carry over: Runway Workflows, Brand Kits and Agent projects are Runway features and do not move to other tools; only the files you download do.
Runway alternatives: questions
Is there a free Runway alternative?
Krea's free plan renews at 100 units a day. Kling's Basic tier is free but includes no credits each month and is not for commercial use, and Pika's free tier includes none either. Runway itself gives 125 one-time credits. Every ImageQuarry plan is paid.
What is the cheapest alternative to Runway?
Billed monthly, Kling Standard is $6.99 for the first month and $8.8 after that, Krea Basic is $9, and Pika's entry tier is $10, against $15 for Runway Standard, as of October 2026. Each counts credits differently, so compare what you make, not credit numbers.
Which Runway alternative edits images by describing the change?
Kling IMAGE 3.0 supports local re-editing from natural-language instructions, Luma's editing is prompt-based, and Krea offers "Edit by typing" on any image. In ImageQuarry, you select a version and describe the change, and the result becomes a new version.
Which Runway alternatives have an API?
Krea, Luma and Higgsfield each list an API, Kling has a separate API Platform, and Pika runs the Pika API Club. Runway also sells API access through Runway Dev.
Can ImageQuarry replace Runway?
Only for still images. Runway generates and edits video and audio as well as images. ImageQuarry is an image workspace: you create from a description or an upload, edit by describing changes, and keep every version in projects.
