Grok Imagine alternatives for image generation and editing

Grok Imagine is the image and video generator inside Grok, the AI assistant from SpaceXSI: you create and edit images, animate them into videos and iterate with Imagine Agent Mode. People look elsewhere mainly because its docs describe only its own grok-imagine models, and because paid access comes through The X Subscription, whose usage pool is shared between Grok and Cursor. Krea fits people who want Grok Imagine 2.0 beside dozens of other models, Leonardo.Ai suits creators who want many models plus phone apps, and ChatGPT Images or Meta AI suit people who prefer to keep creating inside an assistant. ImageQuarry suits people who want a workspace only for images, where every requested change is kept as a version.

We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. Grok Imagine and each alternative were compared on model choice, editing in words, references, how plans are sold, developer access and price, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026.

What is Grok Imagine?

Grok's site calls it "an AI assistant built by SpaceXSI" to chat, create images and write code, while the x.ai footer reads "SpaceXAI LLC". Grok Imagine "is an AI image and video generator": you create and edit images, animate them into videos, and "iterate fast with Imagine Agent Mode". Its current image model, grok-imagine-image-2.0, generates from text or edits with up to 5 reference images, and the same models are sold to developers by the image.

Grok Imagine is one feature of a general assistant sold through The X Subscription, not a standalone image app with plans of its own.

Grok Imagine pricing

Prices from The X Subscription announcement (x.ai, October 12, 2026). Each paid tier includes a pool of Grok model usage shared across Grok and Cursor, stated as a multiple of Plus rather than as a number of images. No annual prices are stated. Developers pay separately: grok-imagine-image is $0.02 per image at 1K and 2K, plus $0.002 per input image. Prices as of October 2026, from grok.com. Check the vendor for current pricing.

What Grok Imagine does well

Create, edit and animate in one flow

Grok Imagine makes and edits images and then animates them into video, with grok-imagine-video-1.5 from $0.08 a second and a lite version from $0.02 a second at 480p, 720p or 1080p.

Edits that combine several source images

The API docs describe using "up to five source images for a single image edit", passed as a public URL, a base64 data URI or a file id, with the output shape following the first input by default.

On every surface Grok runs on

Grok is available on grok.com, iOS, Android, inside X and through the API, so the same image tool follows you from phone to desktop.

A low per-image API price and wide aspect choices

grok-imagine-image costs $0.02 per image at 1K or 2K, and the generation docs list aspect ratios from 1:1 to 21:9 plus an auto setting, with up to 10 images per request.

Where Grok Imagine falls short

Usage is a shared pool, not an image count

Paid X Subscription tiers include "a generous pool of Grok model usage shared across Grok and Cursor", stated as 4x, 15x or 50x the Plus plan, so the pages give no number of images per month.

One family of models

The Imagine docs describe xAI's own grok-imagine image and video models, and no third party image models are named on the pages read on October 20, 2026.

A model slug retires on November 2, 2026

From that date grok-imagine-image-quality is retired, and its requests are served by grok-imagine-image-2.0 with quality set to low, so code that relied on it gets a different setting.

Edits are billed on both ends, and links expire

API image edits are charged for the input image and the generated output, and results come back as temporary URLs that the docs say to download or process promptly.

Why people look for a Grok Imagine alternative

  • You want to set Grok's results against other model families, such as Flux, Ideogram, GPT Image or Nano Banana, without opening several accounts.
  • You want a plan sold for image work, while The X Subscription bundles Grok with Cursor and X benefits and measures usage as a pool shared with Cursor.
  • You build on the image API and want a different route after grok-imagine-image-quality is retired on November 2, 2026, or one that does not return expiring links.

The 6 Grok Imagine alternatives

Ordered by how many of the three reasons above each one answers (several model families in one place, plans sold for image work, and a developer route), then by how close its editing is to Grok Imagine's ask-and-edit flow.

1. Krea

Best for: People who like Grok's results but want to run the same brief through other model families

How it differs from Grok Imagine: Krea's pricing page lists Grok Imagine 2.0 among its image models, next to its in-house Krea 3 and families such as Flux, Ideogram, GPT Image and Nano Banana, so one account covers the comparison. You can edit by typing, brief an Agent that iterates across models for you, and call Krea's public API.

Price: Basic at $9 a month on monthly billing; a 100 units a day tier at $0 (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Compute units on Basic, Pro and Max do not roll over from month to month, and no iOS or Android app appears on its pages.

2. Leonardo.Ai

Best for: Creators who want many image models, phone apps and a pay as you go developer account

How it differs from Grok Imagine: Leonardo.Ai documents image models from several labs, including FLUX.2 Pro, GPT Image 2.5, Ideogram 4.5 and Nano Banana Pro, next to its own Lucid and Phoenix. Its paid plans state a monthly allowance of fast tokens instead of a shared assistant pool, and its API is pay as you go with credit that does not expire.

Price: Essential $12 a month; 150 fast tokens a day on the $0 tier (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: The pages fetched do not describe editing by typing a change, and creations on the free tier are public.

3. ImageQuarry

Best for: People who want a workspace only for images, where each requested change is saved as a version

How it differs from Grok Imagine: Grok Imagine iterates inside an assistant that also chats, writes code and makes video. ImageQuarry is only about images: you describe one or upload one, ask for changes in words, and each change lands as a new version beside the earlier ones in a project. For the same request you can pick Nano Banana 2.1, Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image 2.5 Flare or GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst, which are Google and GPT Image models.

Price: Starter $9 a month with 100 image credits; Pro $29 a month (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Every plan is paid, it makes stills rather than video, and it has not published output specifications or Terms yet.

4. ChatGPT Images

Best for: Assistant users who want to point at the part of an image that should change

How it differs from Grok Imagine: Like Grok, ChatGPT keeps image making inside a general assistant, but its docs describe selecting one area of an image and describing the change for that area, or multi-selecting images in Canvas view and commenting on them together. Projects hold related chats, files and sources in one place.

Price: ChatGPT Go at $8 monthly, Plus at $20 monthly (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Plans describe image use as limited, more or unlimited with no image counts, and programmatic image generation is billed through a separate API.

5. Meta AI

Best for: Casual creators who want everyday image making inside Meta's apps at no charge

How it differs from Grok Imagine: Meta AI creates and edits with Muse Image: you add, remove or change part of an image with a description or a sketch, restyle it from a library of styles, and animate a result, close to Grok's create then animate flow. Meta says everyday creation is free, and developers can call Muse Image on the Meta Model API at $0.01 an image.

Price: Free for everyday use; Meta One Core $7.99 a month (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Its help pages show a Creations section but document no projects, folders, version history or branching, and Meta One is described as still in limited testing.

6. Gemini

Best for: People who want Google's Nano Banana models inside an assistant they already use

How it differs from Grok Imagine: Gemini edits when you ask it to change the background, replace an object or add an element, and it edits uploaded photos the same way. It can take texture, color or style from a reference photo and combine two pictures into one, and generated images collect in a Library you download from.

Price: Nano Banana 2 at $0; Google AI Plus $4.99 a month (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Images carry a visible watermark as well as SynthID, and you must be 18 or over to generate or edit.

Who should stay with Grok Imagine

  • You already pay for SuperGrok, Cursor or X Premium, which x.ai says you can keep at your current plan, price and features.
  • You use Grok's shared usage pool for coding in Cursor as well, so one subscription covers both jobs.
  • You animate stills into short videos right after making them, with grok-imagine-video-1.5 or its lite version.
  • You generate at volume through the API, where $0.02 per image at 1K and 2K suits your budget.

How to try an alternative alongside Grok Imagine

  1. Save the images you want to keep from Grok Imagine to your own device, and if you generate through the API, download outputs promptly since the docs say the returned URLs are temporary.
  2. Copy your strongest prompts and keep the source images behind each multi-image edit, since Grok accepts up to five per edit and other tools set their own limits.
  3. If your code calls grok-imagine-image-quality, note that from November 2, 2026 those requests are served by grok-imagine-image-2.0 at low quality, and compare results before and after while you test.
  4. Run the same three briefs in the alternative, including one edit to an uploaded photo, and set the results beside Grok's.
  5. Keep Grok for animation and chat while the alternative takes over the still-image work that made you look.

Does not carry over: Grok chats, Imagine Agent Mode sessions and The X Subscription usage pool stay with Grok.

Grok Imagine alternatives: questions

Is there a free alternative to Grok Imagine?

Meta says Muse Image in Meta AI is free for everyday creation, Gemini's $0 plan includes image generation and editing with Nano Banana 2, Krea gives 100 units a day, Leonardo.Ai 150 fast tokens a day, and ChatGPT's free plan allows limited image creation. Grok has a Free tier of its own on The X Subscription. Every ImageQuarry plan is paid.

Which alternative has an image API like Grok's?

Krea sells a public API, Leonardo.Ai's API is pay as you go, Meta prices Muse Image at $0.01 per image on the Meta Model API, and OpenAI sells an image generation API apart from ChatGPT plans. Grok's grok-imagine-image costs $0.02 per image at 1K and 2K, and edits are billed for both the input and the output image.

What changes for grok-imagine-image-quality on November 2, 2026?

x.ai's migration note says the grok-imagine-image-quality slug is retired that day, and requests to it are then served by grok-imagine-image-2.0 with quality set to low, which is $0.01 per image cheaper at every resolution. grok-imagine-image (1.0) is not affected.

Can I use the Grok Imagine model inside another tool?

Yes. Krea lists Grok Imagine 2.0 among its image models, OpenArt and Pika name Grok Imagine in their image model lists, and getimg.ai's pricing table includes the Grok Imagine family. That lets you compare it with other models in one account.

How does ImageQuarry compare with Grok Imagine?

Grok Imagine creates, edits and animates inside an assistant that also chats and writes code. ImageQuarry handles still images only: describe or upload one, ask for changes in words, keep every version, and branch from an earlier one when a direction stalls. It offers four models, with Nano Banana 2.1 as the default.
