Adobe Express alternatives for AI image editing and design

Adobe Express is Adobe's template-based design app for social posts, images, videos and flyers, with Firefly-powered AI features such as Generate Image, Insert object and background removal. People look elsewhere mainly because its prompt-anything AI Assistant is a limited beta for Premium, desktop and US English only, and the free plan keeps version history for 10 days. Canva is the closest design suite, Adobe Firefly fits people who want Adobe's typed editing and model choice, Picsart fits mobile creators who want many models, and Kittl and Microsoft Designer fit print and quick personal designs. ImageQuarry fits people who mostly refine single images by describing each change.

We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. Adobe Express and each alternative were compared on templates and design tools, editing in words, model choice, version history, platforms and price, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026.

What is Adobe Express?

Adobe describes Express as "The quick and easy create-anything app" for social posts, images, videos and flyers. Its core is templates and design, and under Design with AI it lists Generate Image plus AI generators for templates, text effects, logos and presentations. You can brush an area to insert or remove an object, remove or change a background, and, in a limited beta, ask an AI Assistant to "prompt, create and edit anything". Adobe names Firefly as the AI behind these features and calls it "designed to be commercially safe".

Adobe Express is the design and template app; Adobe Firefly is Adobe's separate AI creative app, and some Firefly plans bundle Express Premium.

What Adobe Express does well

Templates for everyday content

Express is built for social posts, images, videos and flyers, with AI generators for templates, text effects, logos, presentations and drawings next to Generate Image.

Brush-based object edits

Insert object lets you brush an area and generate an uploaded object into it, and Remove object covers an object with the brush and offers "Generate more", "Keep" or "Discard".

Background tools for images and video

Background removal works on images and video, and the image downloads as a PNG with a transparent background; Change Background is listed too.

A free plan without a card

The free plan needs no credit card and includes free daily generations for images, text effects, templates and Insert and Remove Objects.

Commercial use in general

The pricing FAQ says you may in general use outputs from generative AI features commercially, except beta features designated for personal use.

Where Adobe Express falls short

The AI Assistant is a limited beta

Editing anything from a prompt is in limited beta for Premium, desktop and English (US) only.

Short version history

Version history lasts 10 days on the free plan and 30 days on Premium.

Unlimited background removal costs extra

The remove background page says free users get daily generations and unlimited use needs a paid Adobe Firefly plan.

No named model versions

The homepage names Adobe Firefly as the AI but no specific Firefly model versions, and no model choice is described.

Teams start at two seats

The Teams plan has a 2-seat minimum on an annual subscription.

Why people look for a Adobe Express alternative

  • You want to edit an image just by describing the change on any plan and device, and Express's AI Assistant is limited to Premium, desktop and US English.
  • You want to keep and return to earlier versions for longer than the 10 days the free plan gives you.
  • You want to choose the image model yourself, and Express names Firefly without naming model versions.
  • You remove many backgrounds, and unlimited use on Express is tied to a paid Adobe Firefly plan.

The 6 Adobe Express alternatives

Ordered by fit for someone who wants to keep making designs while editing images in words: design suites with typed editing first, then image tools, then design tools without typed editing. ImageQuarry sits fourth because it answers the editing, version and model reasons but is not a design or video app.

1. Canva

Best for: Teams and creators who want a full design suite with chat-based AI editing

How it differs from Adobe Express: Canva is the closest swap for template design work. Its help pages, read from search indexed text, describe Canva AI 2.0 as a chat workspace where you refine a design by typing the change, and Magic Edit, where you brush an area and describe what to add or replace; Canva's AI Photo Editor page says Magic Edit runs on Google's Nano Banana model.

Price: Pro US$12 a month billed yearly (US$144 a year) or US$18 month to month, per its indexed pricing page; free plan (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Refining a design through Canva AI is listed for Pro, Business and Enterprise, and Canva's pages were read from search indexed text because direct fetches were blocked.

2. Adobe Firefly

Best for: Adobe users who want typed editing and a choice of Adobe and partner models

How it differs from Adobe Express: Firefly is Adobe's AI creative app, and its Prompt to Edit adds, removes or replaces objects and backgrounds from a typed prompt. You can choose the Firefly Image 5 model or partner models from Google, OpenAI and others, and Adobe says Firefly Pro bundles Photoshop and Express.

Price: Firefly Standard US$9.99 a month; free generations every day (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Adobe's commercial safety statement covers its own Firefly models, and you are responsible for checking content made with partner models.

3. Picsart

Best for: Mobile creators who want an editor plus dozens of image models

How it differs from Adobe Express: Picsart pairs a photo and video editor with an image generator offering 65 AI models, including GPT Image 2.5 and Nano Banana 2.1. You can upload your own picture to edit it, add a reference image to guide a result, and work on the web, iOS, Android or Windows.

Price: Free generator with daily limits; Pro $15 monthly, or $10.5 a month billed yearly (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Usage rights depend on the model and your plan, and real-time collaboration and shareable links are marked coming soon on its pricing page.

4. ImageQuarry

Best for: People whose Express projects are really one image refined over many requests

How it differs from Adobe Express: Adobe Express edits regions with a brush, and its prompt-anything assistant is still limited. ImageQuarry's whole workflow is the described change: select a version, say what to change, and get a new version while the earlier ones stay in the workspace with their prompts and references. You can pick one of four models, with Nano Banana 2.1 as the default.

Price: Starter costs $9 a month and Pro $29 a month (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: ImageQuarry is an image workspace rather than a design or video app, and every plan is paid.

5. Kittl

Best for: Brand and print designers who want templates, mockups and vectors

How it differs from Adobe Express: Kittl is a design platform like Express, with templates, fonts, mockups, text effects, vectorization and a Creative Agent that builds assets in one chat. Its image generator lists models such as ChatGPT Image 2, Nano Banana Pro and Recraft V4 Pro, and exports include SVG and PDF.

Price: Free plan; Pro $15.00 a month billed monthly, or $144 a year (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Kittl's help center does not say Remix takes a typed edit instruction, free plan images appear in the public Explore tab, and no native mobile app was found.

6. Microsoft Designer

Best for: Personal cards, invitations and stickers made quickly at no cost

How it differs from Adobe Express: Microsoft Designer turns a description into greeting cards, invitations, images, stickers and collages, and edits by erasing distractions, blurring or removing backgrounds and upscaling. Microsoft says it is free to use, with a subscription for people who create more often.

Price: Free to use; a subscription for frequent creators (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Designer is licensed for personal, non-commercial use, and its FAQ does not describe changing an image by describing the change.

Who should stay with Adobe Express

  • You make social posts, flyers and short videos from templates, which is what Express is built for.
  • You already pay for an Adobe Firefly plan that includes Express Premium and unlimited standard image features.
  • Brush-based Insert object and Remove object cover the edits you make, and you rarely need a typed instruction.
  • Your team wants Adobe's statement that generative outputs can in general be used commercially, inside an Adobe account you already manage.

How to try an alternative alongside Adobe Express

  1. Download the finished images you plan to keep editing, and remember that removed backgrounds come out as PNG files with transparency.
  2. Restore any earlier version you still want within the history window (10 days on Free, 30 on Premium) and download it.
  3. Pick three of your usual jobs, such as a social post, a product image and a background change, and redo each in the alternative.
  4. Keep Express for template layouts and video while the new tool handles the image edits that pushed you to look.

Does not carry over: Express templates, brand assets and version history stay in your Adobe account and do not transfer to other tools.
