Turn a photo into a pencil sketch with real graphite shading

A believable pencil sketch has the marks of a hand: graphite that is darker where it was pressed, hatching that follows form, paper grain showing in the mid tones, and unfinished edges where the artist stopped. Upload your photo to ImageQuarry, describe the kind of sketch you want, from a quick gestural study to a careful tonal drawing, and refine the shading and finish until it looks drawn rather than filtered.

Choose quick or detailed, describe the shading, and decide how much of the edge to leave unfinished.

How to make a pencil sketch with ImageQuarry

  1. 01

    Upload your photo

Upload the photo you want to turn into a pencil sketch. ImageQuarry can start from an image you bring and the change you describe.

  2. 02

Describe the look and what to keep

Pick the sketch type: a fast gestural sketch with loose lines, a tonal drawing with smooth graphite gradients, or a cross-hatched study. Ask for visible paper texture, a light-to-dark range that matches the photo, and edges that fade out rather than ending in a hard rectangle.

  3. 03

    Compare, refine and download

Each request makes a new pencil sketch and the earlier versions stay, so compare them, branch from the one closest to right, and download your pick.

Requests to try for a pencil sketch

Example requests for a pencil sketch, each one something to ask for that produces a new version you review.

A portrait study

Portraits suit careful tone on the face and loose lines elsewhere.

A quick travel sketch

Loose sketches capture a place fast.

A cross-hatched scene

Hatching gives an engraving-like feel.

A pet drawing

Fur works with directional strokes.

Charcoal-dark contrast

Strong darks add drama.

What makes a pencil sketch work

Graphite has a range

Artists use hard leads for light tones and soft leads for dark ones. Asking for a full range from silver gray to rich black avoids a flat, faded look.

Shading follows form

Hatching and smudged tone that wrap around a shape read as drawing; uniform texture reads as a filter.

Unfinished edges

Sketches often trail off toward the edges of the page. Asking for a vignetted, unfinished border adds authenticity.

Paper grain

Graphite catches on the tooth of the paper, leaving speckled mid tones. Mention paper texture for realism.

References for the pencil sketch

Add one or more reference images to show the direction you want for the pencil sketch: they guide the result; review each version to see how closely the pencil sketch follows them.

Every pencil sketch kept

Each change to the pencil sketch produces a new version, and the earlier ones are preserved with the prompts and references that made them.

What is a photo to pencil sketch conversion?

It is turning a photograph into an image that looks drawn with graphite or colored pencil: line, hatching and tone on paper, with the marks and simplification of a hand-made drawing.

It is not the same as line art, which drops tone entirely, or a charcoal drawing, which is softer, darker and smudgier.

Pencil sketch questions

How do I make the sketch look hand-drawn?

Ask for visible strokes that follow the form, paper texture, and edges that fade out unfinished. Uniform texture over the whole image is the telltale sign of a filter.

Can I get a colored pencil sketch?

Yes. Ask for colored pencil with layered strokes and paper showing through. A limited palette usually looks more natural than full photo color.

What photos work best?

Photos with clear light and shadow. Flat, evenly lit photos give a sketch little tone to work with.

Can it look like a page from a sketchbook?

Ask for a sketchbook page with paper texture, unfinished edges and perhaps a few construction lines left visible.

Can I keep parts of my photo the same in the pencil sketch?

In the request for your pencil sketch, say what to keep as well as what to change, such as the face, the pose or the crop, then review the new version to see how closely it followed that.

Which model should I use for a pencil sketch?

For a pencil sketch you can stay with the default, Nano Banana 2.1, or pick Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image 2.5 Flare or GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst when you want a different result for the same request.

Create an image. Edit it with words. Keep refining.
