Turn a photo into a comic book panel

Comic art communicates fast: heavy black inks for shadow, flat or cel-colored areas, halftone dots in the print tradition, dynamic angles and room for lettering. A photo becomes a convincing panel when it borrows those conventions instead of just gaining an outline. Upload your photo to ImageQuarry, describe the comic tradition and the panel you want, and refine the inking, color and framing across versions.

Pick a comic tradition, describe inks and color, and leave room for speech bubbles if you plan to letter it.

How to make a comic panel with ImageQuarry

  1. 01

    Upload your photo

Start from your own photo: upload it, then describe the comic panel you are after in plain words.

  2. 02

Describe the look and what to keep

Choose the comic flavor: classic superhero with bold inks and saturated color, newspaper strip with clean simple lines, graphic novel with moody muted palettes, or a black and white indie look. Ask for heavy spotted blacks in the shadows, halftone dots if you want a printed feel, a dramatic camera angle, and empty space at the top if a speech bubble will go there.

  3. 03

    Compare, refine and download

Your earlier versions are preserved, so you can return to any comic panel you tried, branch a new direction from it, and download the one you choose.

Requests to try for a comic panel

Example requests for a comic panel, each one something to ask for that produces a new version you review.

A superhero version of a friend

Birthday gifts and party invitations love this.

A vintage comic cover feel

Halftone and aged paper signal a classic era.

A graphic novel scene

Muted palettes and heavy shadows suit serious stories.

A comic strip of the family

Simple lines read well in short strips.

Space for a speech bubble

Plan lettering before you add it.

What makes a comic panel work

Spotted blacks

Comic inkers fill shadows with solid black shapes rather than gradients. Ask for bold black shadows to get the inked look.

Halftone and flat color

Printed comics used flat color areas and dot patterns. Halftone dots are the quickest signal of a vintage comic.

Dynamic framing

Low angles, close-ups and tilted horizons add drama. Ask for a camera angle, not only a style.

Lettering space

Panels need clear areas for balloons and captions. Plan the space before adding text yourself.

Every comic panel kept

Each change to the comic panel produces a new version, and the earlier ones are preserved with the prompts and references that made them.

Words drive the comic panel

You select a version and describe the change; each request builds on the comic panel you chose instead of starting over.

What is photo to comic?

It is redrawing a photograph as a comic book panel, using comic conventions such as inked outlines, spotted blacks, flat or halftone color and dramatic framing, so it reads like a page from a comic.

It is not the same as manga, which has its own screentone and eye conventions, or a cartoon, which simplifies more and rarely uses heavy inked shadows.

Comic panel questions

Can I add speech bubbles?

Plan the space in the request, then add the lettering yourself in a design tool, where you control the words and font. Ask for a clear area where the bubble will go.

How do I get the old printed comic look?

Ask for halftone dots, a limited flat palette and slightly off-white paper. Those printing artifacts are what make it read as vintage.

Can I make a whole comic page from several photos?

Make one panel per photo with the same described style, compare them side by side, and assemble the page in a layout tool.

Why does my panel look like a cartoon filter?

Ask for solid black shadow shapes, a stronger camera angle and flat color. Outlines alone are not enough to read as a comic.

Can I keep parts of my photo the same in the comic panel?

In the request for your comic panel, say what to keep as well as what to change, such as the face, the pose or the crop, then review the new version to see how closely it followed that.

Which model should I use for a comic panel?

For a comic panel you can stay with the default, Nano Banana 2.1, or pick Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image 2.5 Flare or GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst when you want a different result for the same request.
