# Lighting variations: the same scene at different moments

Light decides the mood of an image more than almost anything else. The same kitchen is cheerful in morning sun, intimate under a single pendant at night and clinical under flat overhead light. In ImageQuarry you select an image and ask for different lighting in words, keep each one as a version, and compare the moods side by side before choosing the one that tells your story.

Name the light source, direction and color; change light alone in each version.

## How to explore lighting variations with ImageQuarry

1. **Select the image** Start from a generated image or one you upload; the original light stays in the workspace for comparison.
2. **Describe the light precisely** Name the source, direction and color: low evening sun from the left, a single warm lamp, cool overcast daylight from above.
3. **Change only the light** Say that the scene and objects stay as they are. Review each new version to see how closely it followed that.
4. **Compare the moods** Compare versions side by side, choose the light that fits and download it.

## Lighting variation requests

The first quotes one of ImageQuarry's own example requests.

- **Sharp sunlight**: A single beam of sun adds drama and a clear focal point.
- **Golden hour**: Low warm sun flatters people and landscapes.
- **Overcast**: Soft, even light suits product and food images.
- **Night interior**: Lamps and practical lights make a room feel lived in.
- **Neon**: Colored light from signs suits urban and music imagery.
- **Studio**: Controlled studio light makes a subject look deliberate.

## What to look at in lighting variations

- **Shadows reveal direction**: Where the shadows fall tells the viewer where the light comes from. Check that shadows agree with the light you asked for.
- **Color temperature sets mood**: Warm light feels intimate and nostalgic; cool light feels calm, modern or lonely.
- **Contrast changes drama**: Hard light with deep shadows is dramatic; soft light with gentle shadows is calm and clear.
- **Reflective surfaces**: Glass, metal and water show light sources as reflections. Check those areas in each version.
- **Lighting is a change you can ask for**: Different lighting is one of the changes you can request in words on a selected version; each change makes a new version and earlier versions are preserved.
- **Use a light reference**: Add a reference that shows the light you want. Check each version against it.

## Light types and the mood they create

| Light | Mood | Ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Golden hour | Warm, nostalgic | Low warm sun from behind |
| Overcast | Calm, clear | Soft daylight, no hard shadows |
| Hard midday sun | Bright, harsh | High sun with crisp shadows |
| Window light | Natural, intimate | Daylight from a large window at the side |
| Night practicals | Cozy, cinematic | Lamps on, dark windows |
| Neon | Urban, energetic | Colored light from signs |

## What are lighting variations?

Lighting variations are versions of the same image with different light: a new source, direction, color temperature or contrast, used to choose the mood of a scene without changing its content.

_They are not a lighting plan for a real shoot, though they can help you decide what to ask a photographer for._

## Lighting variation questions

### Can I relight a photo I upload?

Yes. Upload it, select it and describe the new light.

### Will the scene stay the same?

Say that the scene and objects should stay as they are. Review the new version to see how closely it followed that.

### Can I go back to the original light?

Earlier versions are preserved, and you can branch from any of them.

### Can I compare day and night versions?

Yes. Compare versions side by side, choose one and download it.

### Can I show the light I want with an example photo?

Add it as a reference. References guide the result. Review each version to see how closely it follows them.

### Why do reflections look odd sometimes?

Shiny surfaces show light sources directly. Look closely at glass and metal in each version and ask for a small correction if needed.

### Which lighting should I try first?

Start with the light that matches when and where the scene would really happen, then try one contrasting mood to see what changes.
