Flat style images: solid shapes, a short palette and no shading
Flat illustration builds a picture from solid areas of color with no gradients, no cast shadows and no texture. It grew out of interface icons and editorial infographics, and it now shows up on websites, slides, packaging and stickers because it stays readable at small sizes. Getting it from an AI image tool takes more than the word flat: you name the shapes, the colors and what to leave out. In ImageQuarry you describe the illustration, then ask for one change at a time, such as fewer colors, bigger shapes or no outlines, and every request becomes a new version next to the last one.
Describe the subject as simple shapes, give the palette by name, and ask for shading to be removed when it creeps in.

How to get a clean flat illustration
- 01
Describe the subject as shapes
Flat art simplifies: a person becomes a rounded body and a circle head, a tree becomes a lollipop or a triangle. Write the subject in those terms, for example a cyclist made of simple geometric shapes, rather than as a detailed scene. Describing an image and generating it is the starting point.
- 02
Fix the palette in the first request
Name four to six colors and the background color. Flat style depends on the palette more than any other choice, so a request such as coral, mustard, teal and cream on an off-white ground gives a more coherent result than a mood word.
- 03
Remove depth in follow-ups
If gradients, glossy highlights or drop shadows appear, ask for them to go in the next request: no gradients, no shadows, solid fills only. Each change is made on the version you selected and produces a new one.
- 04
Compare and pick
Put the versions side by side, choose the one where the shapes read best, and download it. Simple shapes make small differences in spacing easy to see when versions sit together.
Flat style requests to start from
Requests you could write. They describe what to ask for, not results.
An office scene for a blog header
Flat style likes people at work: desks, laptops and plants reduced to clean shapes, with one color picked out as an accent.
A city skyline band
Skylines become rows of rectangles with window grids, which makes them a classic flat banner.
An icon-like object
Single objects drawn flat work as spot illustrations next to a paragraph.
A landscape in layers
Hills, sea and sky become stacked bands, each one solid color.
A character for a guide
A simple mascot can come back across several images if you keep its description fixed.
Swapping the color story
Once the shapes work, the same scene can be tried in another palette as a separate request.
What makes flat style work
No light source
Flat art does not model light. Shapes are filled with a single color each, so depth comes from overlap and color contrast instead of shading.
A limited palette
Most flat illustrations use a handful of colors repeated across the image. Reusing the same few tones is what makes a set of flat images look related.
Geometry first
Circles, rounded rectangles and triangles do the drawing. Proportions are often exaggerated, such as long legs or large heads, to keep a figure readable.
Outlines are a choice
Some flat styles use no outlines, others use one consistent stroke weight. Say which you want, because mixing the two looks unfinished.
Flat is not the same as minimal
A flat image can be busy, with many objects and patterns, as long as every area is a solid fill. Minimalism is about taking objects away; flatness is about how each one is filled.
Each change is a new version
You describe the next change on the version you selected, the result arrives as a new version, and the earlier ones stay in place, so a simpler or bolder take stays available.
A reference can set the palette
Add a palette swatch or an illustration you like as a reference to steer colors or shapes. References guide the result; review each version to see how closely it follows them.
Flat style problems and how to word the fix
| What you see | Why it happens | What to ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Soft gradients on large areas | Many models add subtle lighting by default | Solid flat fills only, no gradients, no shading |
| Too many colors | The palette was left open | Use only these four colors: name them |
| Small fussy details | The subject was described like a photo | Simplify into large geometric shapes with fewer details |
| Uneven outlines | Outline style was not specified | No outlines, or one even dark outline on every shape |
| Text that looks garbled | Lettering is hard for image models | Leave a plain area for text and add the words in a design tool |
| Shapes look 3D | Highlights and cast shadows crept in | Remove highlights and shadows, keep every shape two-dimensional |
What is flat style in AI images?
Flat style is an illustration approach that draws everything with solid areas of color and simple geometric shapes, without gradients, cast shadows, highlights or texture. With an AI image tool you get it by describing the subject as shapes, naming a short palette and asking for any depth to be removed in follow-up requests.
Flat style is not minimalism, which removes objects, and it is not line art, which draws with strokes instead of filled shapes. Flat design in interfaces also covers buttons and type; this page is about the illustration style.
Questions about flat style images
Why does my flat illustration still have shading?
Many image models add light by default. Ask in the next request for solid fills only, with no gradients, highlights or shadows, and compare the new version with the previous one.
How many colors should a flat illustration use?
Four to six is a common range: one background color, one or two main colors and one or two accents. Naming the colors in the request keeps the result from drifting into a full spectrum.
Can I turn a photo into a flat illustration?
Yes. Upload the photo and describe the change, for example redraw this as a flat illustration with solid colors and simple shapes. Review the new version to see how much of the original composition it kept.
How do I make several flat images look like a set?
Keep the palette, outline choice and shape language fixed in every request, and add your first finished image as a reference for the next ones. References guide the result; review each version to see how closely it follows them.
Is flat style good for text-heavy designs?
Flat backgrounds leave clean space for headlines, but lettering produced inside an image is often unreliable. Leave a plain area in the illustration and set the words in a layout or design tool.
Can I go back to an earlier flat version?
Yes. Every version stays in the workspace, and you can branch from any earlier one to try a different palette or layout while the other path stays in place.
