# Why does AI mess up hands?

Hands are small in most training photos, appear in countless poses and are often partly hidden, so models see fewer clear examples of them than of faces. Models learn patterns rather than anatomy, which is why a finger count or a grip can go wrong in an otherwise convincing image.

A Stability AI spokesperson explained in 2023 that hands are less visible and much smaller than faces in the datasets used to train image models. Newer models have improved, but complex poses, interlocked fingers and hands holding objects are still where errors tend to show.

Check hands at full size before you use an image. A wrong hand is easy to miss in a thumbnail.

When a hand is wrong, fix that part rather than regenerating the whole image, so less of the picture changes.

In ImageQuarry you can ask for the hand to be corrected on the version you chose; the earlier version stays in place if the fix makes things worse.

## Ask for the hand fix and say what stays

Ask for one correction on the version you like and keep the earlier version beside it.
