# What is an image version in AI editing?

An image version is one saved result in a chain of edits: the first image you make is version 1, and each change you ask for makes a new one. Earlier versions are not overwritten, so they stay available to compare, reuse or edit again.

Versions matter because AI edits are not perfectly predictable. OpenAI's image prompting guide warns that "repeated edits can still change details you intended to preserve". A saved earlier version is the fallback when an edit goes the wrong way.

A version is not the same as a variation. A variation is an alternative take on the same request, made side by side. A version is the next step in a sequence, made by asking for a change. See [What are image variations in AI?](https://www.imagequarry.com/faq/what-are-image-variations/).

In ImageQuarry, each change you ask for produces a new version, and earlier versions are kept alongside it, together with the prompts, sources, references and conversation that produced them.
