# Does editing an image cost the same as generating one?

Often, yes. Most AI image models make a complete new image for every edit, so an edit is billed much like a new generation. The exact cost depends on the tool, the model and the output size, so check the tool's credit rules.

When you ask a model to change the lighting or replace a background, it reads your image and your instruction and outputs a whole new image. Developer pricing reflects this: Google's Gemini API charges image models for input tokens, including the images you send, plus output images priced by resolution.

On a per-image API, a project with one generation and five edits is billed as roughly six images, not one. Budget for the number of rounds you usually need, not just the first image.

Some apps price editing features differently from generation. Adobe, for example, separates standard and premium features, and premium features use credits based on the model, the output and the file size.

In ImageQuarry, each change makes a new version and uses credits. How many depends on the model and the operation.
