Question

Does editing a photo with AI change who owns it?

No. The original photo stays with whoever owns its copyright. Editing someone else's photo with AI does not give you their rights. Use photos you own, have licensed or have permission to change.

The Copyright Office says that where a human's own copyrightable work is used as input and is perceptible in the output, that person is the author of at least that portion, with protection similar to a derivative work.

The new material the AI adds is different. Under current US guidance it is not protected unless a human determined its expressive elements, for example through creative modification or arrangement.

Editing someone else's photo without permission can infringe their copyright, whatever tool you use.

This is general information, not legal advice, and the rules differ by country.
