# Does each AI edit reduce image quality?

It can, gradually. Each AI edit produces a new image, and over many rounds small softening, color shifts and artifacts can build up, especially if every round is saved as a compressed JPEG. Editing from the best earlier version, and keeping a lossless copy, prevents most of it.

Two things add up. First, the model regenerates the picture, so fine texture can soften a little each time. Second, JPEG is a lossy format: the Library of Congress notes that its quality depends on the degree of compression applied, so saving and re-saving compressed copies adds loss on top.

Signs to watch for are waxy skin, smeared fine patterns, color banding in skies and edges that look painted. When you see them, go back to the last clean version and make the next change from there.

ImageQuarry keeps every version, so you never have to build on a tired copy: pick the cleanest version as the starting point for the next change. For choosing a file format, see [PNG or JPEG](https://www.imagequarry.com/faq/png-or-jpeg-for-ai-images/).
