# Can I go back to an earlier version of an AI image?

Yes, if the tool keeps a version history: each edit is then saved as a new version, and you can reopen an earlier one when a later edit goes wrong. Tools that show only the latest result may make you upload the image again or regenerate it. ImageQuarry keeps earlier versions beside each new one.

Going back is most useful when a later edit changed something you wanted to keep, such as a face, a label or the lighting. OpenAI's prompting guide says repeated edits can drift and advises restating what to preserve. Reopening the last good version is often simpler than trying to undo drift with more instructions.

In a chat, earlier images usually stay in the thread, but the next edit applies to the image you select or send. Check which image the tool is editing before you describe the change.

In ImageQuarry, versions stay in the workspace with the prompts, references and conversation that produced them, so you can compare them and continue from the one you choose.

## Return to the version that worked

Every change in ImageQuarry makes a new version, so the one you liked is still there when a later edit misses.
