# ImageQuarry vs fal: an image app or a model inference platform

fal is a developer platform: you call more than 1,000 image, video, audio and 3D models through one API and pay per output, with serverless GPUs for your own deployments. ImageQuarry is an app for people making images: describe or upload one, ask for changes in words, and keep every version in projects. Choose fal if you are building a product and want model choice and usage-based billing. Choose ImageQuarry if you want to create and refine images yourself in a ready workspace.

_We make ImageQuarry. We compared it with fal using fal's own public pages, checked October 20, 2026, and say where fal does more._

## At a glance

| | ImageQuarry | fal |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | People creating and editing images | Developers calling models through an API |
| Models | Four image models; Nano Banana 2.1 by default | 1,000+ hosted models, such as Seedream 5.0, GPT Image 2.5 and Flux 2 |
| Editing with words | Ask for a change on a selected version | Through hosted models such as FLUX.1 Kontext [pro] at $0.04 per image |
| Billing | Starter at $9 per month with 100 image credits a month | Usage based, per output; no monthly plans listed |
| Where you work | The ImageQuarry app | API clients, per-model playgrounds and a Sandbox |

## ImageQuarry and fal: the differences that matter

- **Breadth of models**: fal hosts more than 1,000 models, and its Sandbox lets developers "compare models side-by-side" before choosing one. ImageQuarry offers four image models.
- **Per-output prices**: fal prices each model separately, for example Nano Banana Pro at $0.15 per image and FLUX 2 at $0.012 per megapixel, as of October 2026, with no subscription. ImageQuarry plans are monthly, with optional metered overage that is off unless you turn it on.
- **A workspace for the person, not the code**: In ImageQuarry, versions live together with their prompts, references and conversation, and you compare, choose and download. fal returns files from its CDN, kept for at least 7 days by default, to your application.
- **Licensing by model**: fal says each model has its own license, with commercial-use badges on model pages and research-only models marked. ImageQuarry has not published rights terms.
- **Utilities without an account**: fal offers browser tools such as a background remover, upscaler and image extender with "No account, no watermark". Those utilities are outside what ImageQuarry lists.

## ImageQuarry vs fal, side by side

| Topic | ImageQuarry | fal |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Describe the image in plain language, or upload an image and describe how you want it changed | API calls to hosted text-to-image models; per-model playgrounds |
| Editing with words | Select a version and ask for a change in words: lighting, background, an added object, composition or color | Through hosted models such as FLUX.1 Kontext [pro] and FLUX 2 Edit |
| Reference images | Add one or more source and reference images to guide material, color, light or shape | Depends on the hosted model |
| Versions, variations and branching | Each change makes a new version and earlier versions are kept; make variations and branch from any version | Up to your own application; outputs kept on the CDN at least 7 days |
| Projects and library | Projects and a persistent library that keep prompts, references and versions together | Workflows and a Sandbox to compare models |
| Image models | Nano Banana 2.1 (default), Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image 2.5 Flare and GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst | 1,000+ hosted models: Seedream, GPT Image, Flux, Nano Banana, Ideogram, Krea, Qwen Image |
| Output resolution and formats | Not published | Depends on the model; browser upscaler and extender tools |
| Commercial use terms | Not published | Per model license; many marked for commercial use |
| Price | Starter at $9 per month with 100 image credits a month; Pro at $29 per month with 300 image credits a month; optional metered overage, off unless you turn it on; every plan is paid | Usage based: Nano Banana Pro $0.15 per image, FLUX 2 $0.012 per megapixel (October 2026) |

## About each product

- **ImageQuarry**: ImageQuarry is a conversational AI image workspace. You describe an image or upload one, then ask for specific changes in words, such as new lighting, a different background or an added object. Each change makes a new version and earlier versions are kept, so you can make variations, branch from any version, add reference images and organize the work in projects and a library. You can choose between four image models: Nano Banana 2.1 (the default), Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image 2.5 Flare and GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst. Plans: Starter at $9 per month with 100 image credits a month, and Pro at $29 per month with 300 image credits a month, with optional metered overage that is off unless you turn it on. Every plan is paid. ImageQuarry has not published output specifications or rights terms yet, and it is not a headshot or background removal tool.
- **fal**: fal (fal.ai) describes itself as "the generative media inference platform: call 1,000+ image, video, audio and 3D models through one API", with serverless GPUs and on-demand clusters. Image models it hosts include Seedream 5.0, GPT Image 2.5, Flux 2, Nano Banana 2.1 and Ideogram 4, each priced per output, for example Nano Banana Pro at $0.15 per image as of October 2026. There are no monthly plans; purchased credits expire after 365 days. Developers use Python and JavaScript clients, playgrounds and a Sandbox; fal says it is "Trusted by over 1,500,000 developers and leading companies".

## Which one fits your work

**Choose ImageQuarry when:**
- You want to make images yourself, not integrate an API
- You want a conversation that keeps every version
- You want projects and a library without building storage

**Choose fal when:**
- You are building an app and need many models through one API
- You want to pay per output with no subscription
- You need GPUs for your own model deployments
- You want to compare dozens of models before choosing

## How to try both on the same image

1. If you are a developer, call Nano Banana Pro on fal with your description.
2. Open ImageQuarry, choose Nano Banana Pro and use the same description.
3. Ask ImageQuarry for one change and keep both versions in a project.
4. Decide whether you need an API for your product or a workspace for your own images.
