# Topaz Photo AI alternatives for photographers who upscale and denoise

Topaz Photo AI, the desktop photo enhancer from Topaz Labs, is discontinued: Topaz's docs say v4.0.4 is the final version, that no model updates will be released, and that the app was discontinued in September 2025. Its successor, Topaz Photo, is a subscription-only app used on one computer at a time. People look elsewhere for a one-time purchase, Linux support or updates without a subscription. Upscayl fits a no-cost desktop upscaler on Linux, macOS or Windows, Luminar Neo and VanceAI fit buyers who want a one-time payment, and Let's Enhance and Magnific fit upscaling in the browser. ImageQuarry is for changing what an image shows by describing it, not for recovering detail.

_We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. Topaz Photo AI and each alternative were compared on upscaling and repair tools, desktop or web, how you pay, operating systems, editing in words and price, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026._

## What is Topaz Photo AI?

Topaz Photo AI was Topaz Labs' desktop app for Mac and Windows that improves existing photos rather than generating new ones. The successor page describes Topaz Photo as an application "used to enhance image and photo quality through noise reduction, image sharpening, enhancing faces, and image upscaling", aimed at "on-location photographers". Its tools include Wonder models, Denoise, Sharpen, Upscale, Recover Faces, Preserve Text, Dust & Scratch and a Healing Brush, and it runs standalone or as a plugin for Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, Capture One, Apple Photos and Affinity Photo.

_Topaz Photo AI is not Photo AI (photoai.com), the service that trains a model on your selfies, even though both are searched as "photo ai"._

## Topaz Photo AI pricing

Topaz Photo AI itself is no longer sold as a new product; these are the prices of its successor, Topaz Photo. Personal and Studio prices were shown with sale prices for the first 3 months or the first year on October 20, 2026, for example Personal monthly at $19.50 for 3 months, then $39. Personal and Studio carry limited commercial use (organizations under $1M a year in revenue), and Pro has full commercial use. Topaz offers a full refund if you ask within 2 days. Prices as of October 2026, from topazlabs.com. Check the vendor for current pricing.

- Topaz Photo AI Topaz Photo Personal: $39 per month, billed monthly (Unlimited local and cloud image rendering, limited commercial use; $25 a month with an annual commitment, or $199 a year billed annually)
- Topaz Photo AI Topaz Photo Personal (annual): $199 per year, billed annually (The same Personal plan paid once a year; the homepage shows "From $8.29/mo")
- Topaz Photo AI Topaz Photo Pro: $63 per month, billed every month for 12 months (Additional pro models, local Wonder 1, seat management, full commercial use; or $599 billed annually)
- Topaz Photo AI Topaz Studio bundle: $69 per month, billed monthly (Topaz Video, Topaz Photo, Topaz Gigapixel, mobile and web apps, 300 monthly cloud video credits; $45 a month with an annual commitment, or $399 a year)

Prices as of 2026-10.

## What Topaz Photo AI does well

- **Local rendering that keeps files on your machine**: Topaz says that "With local rendering, your files never leave your computer", and the Personal plan includes unlimited local and cloud image rendering.
- **A full repair toolset in one app**: The plan lists Wonder 2 and 3, Standard Max, Dust & Scratch, Super Focus, Remove, Denoise, Sharpen, Upscale, Adjust Lighting, Balance Color, Recover Faces, Preserve Text and a Healing Brush. Wonder handles upscaling, sharpening and denoising "in just one click".
- **Works inside the editors photographers already use**: It runs as a plugin for Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, Capture One, Apple Photos and Affinity Photo, and in plugin mode the image saves back to the host editor.
- **Batch export to TIFF and DNG**: Standalone export controls file name, format and location, with JPEG, PNG, TIFF and DNG output (RAW files export as DNG), and batch processing is supported.
- **The old license is yours to keep**: Topaz's comparison page says a Photo AI license "gives you ownership of a specific version" and can be used on 2 computers at the same time.

## Where Topaz Photo AI falls short

- **No more updates for Photo AI**: Topaz labels Photo AI "Discontinued, Legacy app", says v4.0.4 is the final version and that "No model updates will be released". The old product URL now redirects to Topaz Photo.
- **The successor is subscription only, on one computer**: Topaz Photo is a "Subscription-only app" that "Can be used on 1 computer at a time" and needs monthly authentication; using it on more than one machine needs a Pro license.
- **No Linux and a heavy install**: Topaz states that Linux, virtual machines, NAS setups and eGPUs are not supported. Windows needs 16GB of RAM and a GPU with 6GB of VRAM, generative models need 8GB of VRAM locally, and the install takes about 60 GB.
- **Repair only, no generation**: No text to image or describe-a-change editing is listed. Edits are made with tools, sliders and brushes, and Remove works in auto or brush modes.
- **No free tier and limited commercial use on Personal**: No free tier is listed on the pricing section, and the Personal plan's "Limited commercial use" covers organizations under $1M USD in annual revenue.

## Why people look for a Topaz Photo AI alternative

- You want software you pay for once. Photo AI was sold as a license to a specific version, and its successor Topaz Photo is subscription only.
- Your copy of Photo AI will get no new models after v4.0.4, and you want a tool that is still being updated without a monthly fee.
- You work on Linux or a machine without a 6GB VRAM GPU, which Topaz does not support.
- You enhance photos on two computers, and Topaz Photo Personal allows one at a time unless you move to Pro.
- Beyond repair, you also want to change what a photo shows by typing an instruction, which Topaz's tools and sliders do not offer.

## The 6 Topaz Photo AI alternatives

### 1. Upscayl

Best for: Photographers who want a no-cost, open source desktop upscaler, including on Linux
How it differs: Upscayl is an AGPL-3.0 open source desktop upscaler with builds for Linux, macOS and Windows, which covers the Linux machines Topaz does not support. Its site lists upscaling up to 16x, Batch Upscayl and Double Upscayl, and you can add custom models. It is a download you keep, with no license to renew.
Price: Desktop app at no cost (open source); Upscayl Cloud Pro $24.99 a month (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: It does upscaling only, needs a Vulkan compatible GPU (most integrated graphics will not work), and the latest desktop release is v2.15.0 from December 2024.

### 2. Luminar Neo

Best for: Photographers who want a full desktop editor with AI repair for a one-time payment
How it differs: Luminar Neo is a full photo editor for macOS and Windows with Upscale, Supersharp AI, Noiseless AI and Photo Restoration next to layers, masking and batch processing. Like Topaz it works as a plugin for Photoshop, Lightroom and Apple Photos, but Skylum sells it as a one-time payment, with Desktop Only at $99.00 on sale on October 20, 2026.
Price: Desktop Only $99.00 one-time (sale price, October 2026) (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Generative tools, Restoration and the AI Assistant are included for 1 year from purchase, then need a Luminar Prime renewal (checkout shows $33.00 for Desktop).

### 3. VanceAI

Best for: Windows users who want local enhancement with a lifetime license option
How it differs: VanceAI for PC runs on Windows and processes locally, with a Lifetime plan at $129.90 next to monthly and yearly options. The web suite adds upscaling, sharpening, denoising, restoration, colorizing and portrait retouching, and VanceAI sells a separate API.
Price: VanceAI for PC 1 month $39.90, 1 year $99.90, Lifetime $129.90; web plans from $20 a month billed monthly (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: The desktop app is Windows only, web uploads are capped at 10MB and 34MP, and its user agreement does not address ownership or commercial use of outputs.

### 4. Let's Enhance

Best for: Upscaling large prints in the browser without installing anything
How it differs: Let's Enhance runs in the browser, so there is no GPU requirement or 60 GB install. Its upscaler increases resolution up to 16x for 300 DPI prints, and the site lists restoration, a Face Enhancer, a Denoiser, a Text Enhancer and editing 20 images at once. Its Chat Editor also changes an uploaded photo from typed instructions.
Price: 10 credits at sign-up; Starter $12 a month billed monthly, or $9 a month billed annually (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: It is web only, with no desktop or mobile app listed, stored images are kept for 3 or 6 months by plan, and remaining credits are lost when you cancel.

### 5. Magnific

Best for: Creative teams who want an upscaler inside a wider generation suite
How it differs: Magnific's homepage, in a capture from October 18, 2026, says it can "Upscale images up to 10K with real detail", and its image menu also lists Skin Enhancer, Relight and Image Extender. Unlike Topaz it is a broad generation platform with web, desktop and mobile apps and a credit-based API.
Price: Premium $14.50 a month billed annually (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Credit costs vary widely by model (from 50 to 1,000 credits an image), and the monthly billing price was not shown on the pricing page as of October 2026.

### 6. ImageQuarry

Best for: Photographers who want to rework what a shot shows, such as its light or setting
How it differs: Topaz Photo AI improves the photo you already have with one-click models, sliders and brushes. ImageQuarry does a different job: you upload an image and ask in words for a change such as warmer light, a new background or an added object, and each result arrives as a new version beside the earlier ones. You compare the versions and download the one you choose.
Price: $9 a month (Starter) or $29 (Pro) (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: It is not an enhancer: ImageQuarry publishes no upscaling or output specifications, and every plan is paid, so keep a repair tool for denoising and enlarging.

## Who should stay with Topaz Photo AI

- You own a Photo AI license and it still does what you need: Topaz says the license gives you ownership of that version and works on 2 computers at once.
- You want the newest Wonder models and ongoing development, and a Topaz Photo subscription fits your budget.
- You also use Topaz Video and Gigapixel, where the Topaz Studio bundle covers all the apps in one plan.
- Your edits live in Lightroom Classic or Capture One, and you rely on Topaz saving the result back to the host editor.

## How to move on from Topaz Photo AI

1. Keep your Photo AI v4.0.4 installer and license, since the license covers that version on 2 computers even though no model updates will come.
2. Export finished work from Photo AI as TIFF or DNG rather than JPEG, so the new tool starts from the least compressed file.
3. If you used the plugin, note which host editors call it (Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, Capture One, Apple Photos or Affinity Photo) and check that the replacement supports the same ones.
4. Run the same small set of problem photos (a noisy night shot, a soft portrait, an old scan) through the alternative and compare at full size.
5. Check the replacement's hardware needs before buying: Upscayl needs a Vulkan compatible GPU, and VanceAI's desktop app is Windows only.

Does not carry over: Topaz's Wonder, Recover Faces and Preserve Text models, and any presets you built around them, stay in Topaz apps.

## Topaz Photo AI alternatives: questions

### Is Topaz Photo AI discontinued?

Yes. Topaz's docs label Photo AI "Discontinued, Legacy app", say v4.0.4 is the final version and that no model updates will be released, and give September 2025 as the discontinuation date. The successor, Topaz Photo, is subscription only, from $39 a month billed monthly or $199 a year.

### Is there a free alternative to Topaz Photo AI?

Upscayl's desktop app is open source and costs nothing to download, on Linux, macOS and Windows. Let's Enhance gives 10 credits at sign-up with a watermark on free results, and VanceAI offers 10 credits to try. No free tier is listed for Topaz Photo. Every ImageQuarry plan is paid.

### Which Topaz Photo AI alternative can I buy once?

Luminar Neo's Desktop Only license was $99.00 as a one-time payment on sale in October 2026, with its generative and Restoration tools included for the first year. VanceAI for PC has a Lifetime plan at $129.90 on Windows. Upscayl's desktop app has no price at all.

### What can replace Topaz Photo AI on Linux?

Upscayl publishes Linux builds as AppImage, deb, rpm and zip, plus Flathub and Snap Store packages. Topaz states that Linux is not supported, and browser tools such as Let's Enhance need no install at all.

### How does ImageQuarry compare with Topaz Photo AI?

They do different jobs. Topaz Photo AI denoises, sharpens, upscales and recovers faces in photos you already have. ImageQuarry changes what an image shows: you upload a photo or describe one, ask for a change in words, and keep every version, on plans at $9 and $29 a month.
