# Seedream alternatives: other image models and apps to use instead of ByteDance's

Seedream is ByteDance Seed's image generation and editing model family (5.0 Pro, 5.0 Lite, 4.5 and 4.0), not an app of its own: ByteDance offers it through Dreamina, the Dola chat app and the BytePlus ModelArk API. People look for alternatives because they want another model family to compare against, or one product to work in instead of a model reached through several doors. Gemini and ChatGPT Images suit people who want an app with a no-cost start, and FLUX and fal suit developers paying per image. ImageQuarry suits people who want Nano Banana and GPT Image models in one workspace that keeps every edit as a version.

_We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. Seedream and each alternative were compared on model family, where you use it, editing in words, how you pay and how you start, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026._

## Seedream alternatives at a glance

| Tool | Best for | Price from | How it differs |

## What is Seedream?

ByteDance Seed describes Seedream 5.0 Pro as "A multimodal image generation model that features advanced reasoning and efficient content creation", and Seedream 5.0 Lite as "endowed with deep thinking and online search capabilities". Seedream 4.0 "integrates image generation and image editing capabilities into a single, unified architecture", so a single sentence such as "Replace this dog with a Schnauzer." edits an image. Each Seed page links three ways in: Dola (ByteDance's chat app), a BytePlus Playground and an API. Dreamina, CapCut's creative platform, also lists Seedream 5.0 Pro, 5.0 Lite and 4.5.

_Seedream is the image model family, not Seedance (ByteDance's video models) and not Dreamina, the CapCut app where many people use it; Dreamina has its own alternatives page._

## Seedream pricing

Seedream has no price of its own; you pay for it where you use it. API prices are from BytePlus ModelArk (USD per output image, read October 20, 2026); images not output because of content moderation are not billed. In Dreamina, the $1.50 and $22 first-month prices are promotions, the yearly and quarterly prices were not captured, and paid plans include Image 5.0 at 2K for 1 year (4K from Advanced). Prices as of October 2026, from seed.bytedance.com. Check the vendor for current pricing.

- Seedream Seedream 5.0 Pro (API): $0.045 per image up to 2.61 million pixels ($0.09 per image above that size; first input image free, then $0.003 per extra input image)
- Seedream Seedream 5.0 Lite (API): $0.035 per image (Per output image on BytePlus ModelArk; dola-seedream-5-0-flash is $0.018)
- Seedream Seedream 4.5 (API): $0.04 per image (Seedream 4.0 is $0.03 per image)
- Seedream Dreamina Basic: $15 per month after a $1.50 first month (1,575 credits a month, Dreamina watermark removed in downloads)
- Seedream Dreamina Standard: $36 per month after a $22 first month (3,885 credits a month)

Prices as of 2026-10.

## What Seedream does well

- **Edits from one sentence**: Seed's Seedream 4.0 page promises "precise edits with just one single sentence", with examples such as "Remove the boy in this picture." and "Turn on the lights to light up the living room."
- **Sketches, annotations and layers**: Seedream 5.0 Pro responds to spatial annotations and sketch-based guidance and supports layer separation; in Dreamina its image modifier adds point and lasso selection with 2K output.
- **Many references and outputs at once**: Seedream 4.0 can take multiple reference images and generate several outputs in one go, and 5.0 Lite adds online search so current news and topics can be pictured.
- **Prompts in many languages**: Seed says 5.0 Pro natively supports a dozen widely used languages for prompts; Dreamina's page says text-based editing works in 14.
- **Low per-image API prices**: On BytePlus ModelArk a Seedream 4.0 image is $0.03 and a 5.0 Lite image $0.035, and images blocked by moderation are not billed.

## Where Seedream falls short

- **A model, not a workspace**: Seed's pages send you elsewhere to use Seedream: Dola for chat, a BytePlus Playground, the API, or Dreamina, each with its own account and rules.
- **App prices lead with promotions**: Dreamina's monthly plans show a reduced first month before the regular price (Basic $1.50, then $15), and the yearly and quarterly prices were not captured.
- **Out-of-date offer text**: Dreamina's pricing page still shows a Seedream 4.5 offer for people who subscribed before Dec 15, 2025, next to its current Image 5.0 perks.
- **Quality claims come from internal tests**: Seed's ranking claims for Seedream 4.0 rest on its own MagicBench and an internal Elo evaluation, not an outside benchmark.

## Why people look for a Seedream alternative

- You want to compare another model family, such as Nano Banana or GPT Image, against ByteDance's; Dreamina itself lists Nano Banana Pro beside Seedream.
- You want one product to work in, and Seedream is reached through Dola, a BytePlus Playground, an API or Dreamina rather than an app of its own.
- You want a steady monthly price, and Dreamina's Seedream plans open with first-month promotions while longer billing prices were not captured.
- You build on an API and want to reach several model families, not only ByteDance's, from one account.

## The 5 Seedream alternatives

### 1. Gemini

Best for: Anyone comparing Seedream with Nano Banana who wants to start in an app at no cost
How it differs: Gemini is the app Google built around its Nano Banana image models. You upload or generate an image and ask Gemini to change the background, replace an object or add an element, and you can blend two pictures into one. The free plan includes image generation and editing, and Nano Banana 2.1 needs a Google AI plan.
Price: No-cost tier with image editing; Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Images carry a visible watermark plus SynthID, downloads without a Google AI plan are 1K, and you must be 18 or over.

### 2. ChatGPT Images

Best for: People who would rather talk through edits in a chat than write single-sentence instructions
How it differs: ChatGPT generates and edits images in the conversation: attach a reference, select an area and describe the change, or leave a comment on an image in Canvas view. The free plan includes limited image creation, and the image API is sold separately.
Price: Plus at $20 a month; limited image creation on the free plan (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Image availability and limits depend on your plan, and ChatGPT's help doc says built-in image generation counts toward general Codex usage limits.

### 3. ImageQuarry

Best for: People who want to work with Nano Banana and GPT Image models in one place and keep every edit
How it differs: Seedream is a model you reach through other products. ImageQuarry is the workspace itself: you choose Nano Banana 2.1 (the default), Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image 2.5 Flare or GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst, describe the image, then ask for changes in words. Each change becomes a new version, the earlier ones stay, and you can switch models for the same request when you want a different result.
Price: Starter $9 monthly; Pro $29 monthly (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Seedream is not one of its models, every plan is paid, and ImageQuarry has no published output specifications yet, so check sizes in the workspace.

### 4. FLUX

Best for: Developers who want a different model family with per-image prices and open weights
How it differs: Black Forest Labs sells its FLUX models by the image, at the same price in its browser Playground and its API, with no subscriptions. FLUX 3 Image edits from an instruction and bounding boxes, and combines up to ten references. Open weights can also be licensed for self hosting, which Seedream's pages do not list.
Price: FLUX 3 Image $0.048 per 1K image; Klein $0.009 (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: No free credits or subscription plans were found on its pricing page, and there is no iOS or Android app.

### 5. fal

Best for: Developers who want Seedream and its rivals behind one API and one bill
How it differs: fal hosts Seedream 5.0 and 4.5 next to Nano Banana, GPT Image, FLUX and Ideogram, so you can switch families without a second account. Its Sandbox compares models side by side before you commit, and pricing is per output with no subscription.
Price: Seedream V4.5 $0.04 per image; Nano Banana 2 $0.08 per image (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: There is no standing free tier, generated files sit on fal's CDN with public URLs by default, and each model carries its own license.

## Who should stay with Seedream

- You edit with sketches, spatial annotations or layer separation, which Seed lists for Seedream 5.0 Pro.
- You prompt in languages other than English and rely on Seedream's multilingual support.
- You call the BytePlus API at a few cents per image and value that images blocked by moderation are not billed.
- You already pay for Dreamina and use its 2K Image 5.0 allowance for the year.

## How to try an alternative alongside Seedream

1. Save the images you want to keep from Dreamina, Dola or your API output store, along with the prompts that made them.
2. Rewrite two or three of your one-sentence Seedream edits (for example "Replace this dog with a Schnauzer.") and run them in the alternative on the same source image.
3. If you call the API, run a small batch through the new provider and compare the per-image price at the sizes you actually use.
4. Keep Seedream for the jobs it handles best, such as sketch-guided edits, while you test the rest elsewhere.

Does not carry over: Dreamina credits and plan perks, and Seedream-specific features such as layer separation, stay where you bought them.

## Seedream alternatives: questions

### What is a free alternative to Seedream?

Gemini's free plan includes image generation and editing with Nano Banana 2, and ChatGPT's free plan includes limited image creation. Dreamina, where many people use Seedream, gives free daily credits too. FLUX and fal list no standing free tier. Every ImageQuarry plan is paid.

### What is a good Seedream 4.5 alternative?

For apps, Gemini's Nano Banana models are the most direct comparison. For APIs, fal hosts Seedream V4.5 at $0.04 per image, the same as BytePlus's Seedream 4.5 price, and Nano Banana 2 at $0.08 per image, so you can test both from one account.

### Is there an open-source alternative to Seedream?

Black Forest Labs licenses FLUX open weights for self hosting, with Builder and Platform tiers listed by image volume and no prices shown. Seed's Seedream pages point to Dola, a Playground and an API, and do not list downloadable weights.

### Which alternative edits images from one sentence like Seedream?

Gemini edits when you tell it to change the background or replace an object, ChatGPT lets you select an area and describe the change, and FLUX 3 Image takes the change as an instruction. ImageQuarry handles it as a loop: describe the change, get a new version, and go back to any earlier one.

### Can I use Seedream inside ImageQuarry?

No. ImageQuarry offers four models: Nano Banana 2.1, Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image 2.5 Flare and GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst, with Nano Banana 2.1 as the default. Seedream is available through Dreamina, Dola, BytePlus, and hosts such as fal.
