# Replicate (replicate.com) alternatives for running AI image models

Replicate, the machine learning platform at replicate.com, runs open and proprietary AI models, including many image generators and editors, through a cloud API billed by usage, and in November 2025 it announced it was joining Cloudflare. People look for alternatives mainly because API inputs, outputs and logs are deleted after an hour by default, and private models are billed for setup and idle time as well as active time. fal is the closest swap for many models behind one API, ComfyUI suits running models on your own GPU, and Leonardo.Ai suits people who want an app with an API beside it. ImageQuarry only fits people who are moving away from code entirely.

_We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. Replicate and each alternative were compared on how you run models, billing for custom models, how long outputs are kept, starting allowance, usage terms and platforms, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026._

## Replicate alternatives at a glance

| Tool | Best for | Price from | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| fal | Developers who want a similar catalog of hosted models and per-second GPUs | Nano Banana 2 at $0.08 an image; FLUX 2 at $0.012 a megapixel | 1,000+ models through one API, with outputs kept 7 days or more |
| ComfyUI | Builders who want to run open models on their own machines with no idle charges | Self-installed at no charge; Comfy Cloud from $20 a month, billed monthly | Run open models locally for nothing, or in Comfy Cloud |
| FLUX | Apps built mainly on FLUX that want to buy from the model maker | From $0.041 an image for FLUX 3 Image at 768 by 768 | Black Forest Labs' own API, $0.01 credits, no subscription |
| Stability AI | Developers who need ready edit and upscale endpoints for Stable Diffusion models | SD 3.5 Medium at 3.5 credits an image ($0.01 a credit) | Stable Diffusion API with edit endpoints and 25 starting credits |
| Leonardo.Ai | Small teams who want a full app on web and phones plus an API for automation | 150 tokens a day on the free plan; Essential $12 a month | An app on web, iOS and Android, with a pay-as-you-go API |
| ImageQuarry | People who used Replicate's Playground to edit pictures and would rather have a workspace | $9 or $29 a month, Starter or Pro | No code at all; each edit you describe is kept as a version |

## What is Replicate?

Replicate's tagline is "Run AI with an API", and it describes running and fine-tuning models and deploying custom ones "with one line of code". Its homepage features image models such as google/nano-banana-2, openai/gpt-image-2, black-forest-labs/flux-2-max and bytedance/seedream-5-lite, and edit models like FLUX.1 Kontext [pro] change images from text prompts. Developers use the HTTP API, client libraries for Node.js and Python, or an MCP server, and the Playground on desktop web compares models side by side.

_This page covers Replicate, the AI model hosting company at replicate.com, not the word replicate or similarly named apps such as Replika or Qlik Replicate._

## Replicate pricing

Replicate lists no subscription plans; public models are billed by run time per hardware type or per output. Other per image prices include flux-dev at $0.025, recraft-v3 at $0.04 and ideogram-v3-quality at $0.09. Private models are billed for all the time instances are online, and Enterprise adds SLAs and volume discounts without a listed price. Prices as of October 2026, from replicate.com. Check the vendor for current pricing.

- Replicate cpu-small: $0.000025 per second ($0.09 an hour) (Run time billing for public models on CPU)
- Replicate gpu-t4: $0.000225 per second ($0.81 an hour) (Entry GPU for public models)
- Replicate gpu-l40s: $0.000975 per second ($3.51 an hour) (Mid-range GPU)
- Replicate gpu-h100: $0.001525 per second ($5.49 an hour) (Top listed GPU)
- Replicate flux-1.1-pro: $0.04 per output image (Example of a model priced per output; flux-schnell is $3.00 per thousand images)

Prices as of 2026-10.

## What Replicate does well

- **Many image models through one API**: Replicate's homepage features models from Google, OpenAI, Black Forest Labs, Recraft and ByteDance, and hosted edit models such as FLUX.1 Kontext [pro] let you edit images with text prompts.
- **Broad output rights**: Replicate's Terms grant you all right, title and interest it has in output, including commercial use such as sale or publication, subject to third party terms.
- **Free runs to try models**: A Try for Free collection lets you run selected models, including google/imagen-4 and flux-1.1-pro, without a credit card for a limited number of runs.
- **Deploy your own models with Cog**: You can package and deploy custom models with Cog, Replicate's open-source tool, and fast booting fine-tunes are billed only while active.
- **Continuity after the Cloudflare deal**: Replicate's own post on joining Cloudflare says it will carry on as a distinct brand, the API is not changing, and current models will keep working.

## Where Replicate falls short

- **API results disappear after an hour**: For predictions made through the API, inputs, outputs, files and logs are removed after an hour by default, so you must save your own copies. Web interface predictions are kept indefinitely.
- **Private models bill while idle**: Private models run on dedicated hardware and are billed for setup, idle and active time, except fast booting fine-tunes.
- **Desktop only in the browser**: The Playground needs a sign-in and shows mobile visitors a notice to switch to a desktop or laptop, and no native mobile app was found.
- **Free use is limited to a few runs**: No free tier appears on the pricing page; the Try for Free models are free for a limited number of runs, after which billing and purchased credit are required.

## Why people look for a Replicate alternative

- You want API outputs kept for you, and Replicate deletes API prediction data after an hour by default.
- You run a custom model with uneven traffic and do not want to pay for idle time on dedicated hardware.
- You want more than a handful of free runs while you prototype, and Replicate's free use is a limited number of runs on selected models.
- You want to make images on a phone or without code, and the Playground is a desktop web tool.
- You are reviewing vendors now that Replicate is part of Cloudflare, even though it says its API is not changing.

## The 6 Replicate alternatives

### 1. fal

Best for: Developers who want a similar catalog of hosted models and per-second GPUs
How it differs: fal, the generative media API at fal.ai, offers over 1,000 image, video, audio and 3D models through one API and a Sandbox for comparing them side by side. Its generated files stay on the fal CDN for at least 7 days by default, against Replicate's one hour for API predictions, and you can deploy your own app on GPUs billed per second.
Price: Nano Banana 2 at $0.08 an image; FLUX 2 at $0.012 a megapixel (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Output URLs are public by default, each model has its own license, and no standing free tier is described.

### 2. ComfyUI

Best for: Builders who want to run open models on their own machines with no idle charges
How it differs: Instead of renting dedicated hardware for a private model, ComfyUI runs open models such as Flux.2, Qwen Image and SD3.5 on your own GPU, with as little as 4GB of VRAM for some models. Workflows save as JSON, it runs offline, and Comfy Cloud and API endpoints cover the times you need hosted runs.
Price: Self-installed at no charge; Comfy Cloud from $20 a month, billed monthly (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: You assemble node graphs yourself, and Comfy Cloud runs are capped at 30 minutes except on Pro.

### 3. FLUX

Best for: Apps built mainly on FLUX that want to buy from the model maker
How it differs: Black Forest Labs sells FLUX 3 Image, FLUX.2 and Kontext directly, and its Developer Terms say you own your outputs and may use them commercially. FLUX 3 Image edits from a written instruction with bounding boxes for one element, and self-hosting licenses for open weights are also offered.
Price: From $0.041 an image for FLUX 3 Image at 768 by 768 (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Only FLUX models are available, no free credits appear on the pricing page, and outputs may carry Content Credentials you are not allowed to remove.

### 4. Stability AI

Best for: Developers who need ready edit and upscale endpoints for Stable Diffusion models
How it differs: Stability AI's Platform API gives 25 credits to start and prices calls in credits of $0.01, from 0.9 credits for SDXL 1.0. It ships ready endpoints such as Search and Replace, Inpaint and Replace Background and Relight, and its license says you own outputs from its models.
Price: SD 3.5 Medium at 3.5 credits an image ($0.01 a credit) (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: It covers only Stability's models, slow-service results are kept for 24 hours, and pricing is subject to change.

### 5. Leonardo.Ai

Best for: Small teams who want a full app on web and phones plus an API for automation
How it differs: Leonardo.Ai runs many of the same model families, such as FLUX.2 Pro, GPT Image 2.5, Nano Banana Pro and Seedream, inside an app with collections and a Realtime Canvas. Its separate API is pay as you go, and its docs say API credit does not expire.
Price: 150 tokens a day on the free plan; Essential $12 a month (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Free plan creations are public, and on the free tier Leonardo.Ai holds rights to use the images you make; API access is sold apart from app plans.

### 6. ImageQuarry

Best for: People who used Replicate's Playground to edit pictures and would rather have a workspace
How it differs: On Replicate, an edit with a model like FLUX.1 Kontext [pro] is a single prediction you run and then save. ImageQuarry keeps the whole thread: you describe a change, it becomes a new version, and the prompt, references and earlier versions stay together in your project. You can branch from any earlier version and pick from four models.
Price: $9 or $29 a month, Starter or Pro (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: There is nothing in ImageQuarry to call from your own code, so it cannot replace Replicate in an app you ship, and every plan is paid.

## Who should stay with Replicate

- You use Cog to package and deploy your own models, and fast booting fine-tunes keep your bill to active time.
- You want one API for many vendors' models and are content to save outputs within the hour.
- You are already on Enterprise with SLAs and volume discounts, or you value Replicate's statement that its API and models keep working under Cloudflare.

## How to move work off Replicate

1. Save every output file you still need: API prediction data is removed after an hour by default, and you can delete web predictions yourself with the Delete button once you have your copies.
2. List the model slugs you call, such as black-forest-labs/flux-2-max or google/nano-banana-2, and check which ones the new platform hosts.
3. For custom models packaged with Cog, decide whether to host them on rented GPUs elsewhere or run them locally.
4. Run the same inputs on both platforms for a week and compare cost per image in each vendor's own units.
5. Check the output terms on the new platform, since Replicate's grant is subject to each model's third party terms.

Does not carry over: Replicate deployments, predictions you did not save, and code written against its client libraries stay behind; Cog packages are open source and can be reused where supported.

## Replicate alternatives: questions

### Is there a free alternative to Replicate?

ComfyUI is open source and runs models on your own computer. For hosted options, Leonardo.Ai gives 150 tokens a day on its free plan, Stability AI's API starts with 25 credits, and Comfy Cloud gives new users 5 free runs. Replicate itself offers free runs on selected models. Every ImageQuarry plan is paid.

### Replicate or fal: which should I use?

Both host many image models behind one API with usage billing. fal keeps generated files on its CDN for at least 7 days, at public URLs by default, and adds per-second GPU deployments; Replicate deletes API prediction data after an hour by default and has a Try for Free collection.

### Is Replicate part of Cloudflare now?

Replicate announced on November 17, 2025 that it is joining Cloudflare, and said it will carry on as a distinct brand with the same API. Its homepage now says "Building with Replicate and Cloudflare".

### Which Replicate alternative has a mobile app?

Leonardo.Ai has iOS and Android apps next to its API. fal and Replicate were not found to have native apps, and Replicate's Playground asks mobile visitors to use a desktop.

### Where does ImageQuarry fit next to Replicate?

It is for making and editing images yourself rather than from code. In ImageQuarry, you describe an image or upload one, ask for changes in words, and keep every version together with its prompts and references.
