Photoleap alternatives for AI photo editing beyond the iPhone

Photoleap is Lightricks' photo editing app for iPhone and iPad, combining layers and masks with AI text to image, Generative Fill and tools such as AI Uncrop and background removal. People look elsewhere mainly because its website says it is available for iOS only, and because prices appear only as App Store in-app purchases with no billing period labeled. Picsart and Pixlr cover similar AI edits on Android, the web and desktop, Adobe Photoshop suits layer based work, ChatGPT Images suits quick edits by asking, and Facetune suits selfies. ImageQuarry fits people who want every described edit kept as a version they can return to.

We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. Photoleap and each alternative were compared on editing by brushing and describing, layers, model choice, platforms and published price, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026.

What is Photoleap?

Photoleap presents itself as a "Creative & powerful photo editing app by Lightricks", the company behind Facetune and Videoleap. It mixes a classic editor (layers, blending modes, masking in nearly every tool, RAW support and 16 bit depth) with AI tools: text to image with more than 70 styles, AI Transform with Generative Fill, where you select an area and enter a prompt, plus AI Uncrop, background and object removal, style transfer and photo animation. The site offers a 7 day trial and says the app is for iOS only.

Photoleap is a phone and tablet editor that added AI generation, not a web workspace or a standalone image generator.

Photoleap pricing

Photoleap's website shows no price list. These figures come from the US App Store listing, which does not label billing periods, so a price cannot be matched to weekly, monthly or yearly billing. The website advertises a 7 day trial. Prices as of October 2026, from photoleapapp.com. Check the vendor for current pricing.

What Photoleap does well

Brush an area and say what it should become

In AI Replace you pick Custom, brush over part of the photo and describe what you want there. The August App Store update rebuilt AI Transform around Generative Fill: select an area, enter a prompt.

A real layer editor underneath

Photoleap has layers and blending modes, masking built into nearly every tool, RAW support and 16 bit image depth, and photo sessions save automatically so you can continue later.

Put yourself or a friend into a generated scene

Before generating from text you can select a photo of a person and blend that character into the scene, choosing from over 70 styles and an aspect ratio.

Many AI tools in one app

The homepage lists AI Uncrop, an AI Background Generator, Remove Background, Remove Objects, an upscaler, style transfer, AI Interior Design, AI Headshots and image to video.

Animation as well as stills

The Animate tool adds moving sky and water, overlays, 3D motion with camera moves and animated text, and saves the result as a GIF.

Where Photoleap falls short

iPhone, iPad and Apple Vision only

The website says "Available for iOS only", and the App Store lists iPhone, iPad (iOS 17.0 or later) and Apple Vision. No Android app or web editor is offered on the site, although one FAQ explains animating "on an Android".

Prices without billing periods

The site has no price list, and the App Store shows entries from $6.99 to $59.99 without saying whether each is weekly, monthly, yearly or a one time purchase.

No model names

The text to image page describes the generator and its styles but names no underlying model, so you cannot pick one model over another.

The full feature set sits behind Pro

Photo animation works with some basic features, but the full range needs Photoleap Pro after a 7 day trial, and water and 3D motion effects are listed as iOS exclusives.

Why people look for a Photoleap alternative

  • You edit on an Android phone, in a browser or on a computer, and Photoleap's site says the app is for iOS only.
  • You want to know what you will pay before installing. The website shows no prices, and the App Store entries do not say which billing period each price covers.
  • You want to choose the image model behind your edits, and Photoleap names none on its text to image page.
  • You do not want a subscription after the 7 day trial just to keep the full set of animation and AI tools.

The 6 Photoleap alternatives

Ordered by how well each one replaces Photoleap's AI photo edits while also running on Android or the web and publishing its prices.

1. Picsart

Best for: Phone editors who want the same AI tools on Android, the web and Windows

How it differs from Photoleap: Picsart runs on the web and in Apple, Android and Windows apps, and its generator names its 65 models, among them Nano Banana 2.1, GPT Image 2.5 and Ideogram 4.5. Its pricing page states Pro at $15 a month, or $10.5 a month billed yearly, where Photoleap only shows App Store entries. Projects can be opened on both the mobile app and the web.

Price: Free generator with limited daily generations; Pro $15 a month (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Usage rights depend on the model and your plan, and real-time collaboration and shareable links are still marked coming soon.

2. Pixlr

Best for: Budget editing on any device, with prompt edits that keep a short history

How it differs from Photoleap: Pixlr works in the browser, on iOS and Android and as a desktop app under one subscription. Its Generative Fill edits a selected area from a description, much like Photoleap's Custom brush, and its Instruct Editor keeps up to 10 versions you can return to.

Price: Free to use without an account; Plus $2.49 a month billed monthly (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Plus includes only 80 AI credits a month, and the Instruct Editor FAQ promises unlimited editing on Plus, which the pricing page contradicts.

3. Adobe Photoshop

Best for: People who rely on Photoleap's layers and masks and want a professional editor

How it differs from Photoleap: Photoshop is layer based like Photoleap, and Generative Fill places each result on its own Generative Layer for nondestructive editing. It runs on desktop, the web and mobile, and since August 2026 it can edit an image from a natural language prompt, with partner models such as Nano Banana Pro on desktop.

Price: Photoshop plan US$22.99 a month, annual billed monthly; 7 day trial (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: The Photoshop plan includes 25 generative credits a month, and its FAQ says app content may not be used commercially right after calling Generative Fill safe for it.

4. ChatGPT Images

Best for: Quick edits by asking, on whichever phone or computer you have

How it differs from Photoleap: ChatGPT is available on the web, iOS and Android, and you can select a specific area of an image and describe the change, the same idea as Photoleap's Custom option without a separate editor. On mobile you can also leave a comment on a generated image saying what to change.

Price: Free plan with limited image creation; Go $8 a month (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: Image limits depend on your plan and workspace settings, and image generation with Thinking is reserved for Plus and Pro.

5. Facetune

Best for: Selfie and portrait retouching from the same company, also on Android and the web

How it differs from Photoleap: Facetune is Photoleap's sibling at Lightricks, built for portraits: you ask its AI assistant for smoother skin, a vintage look or a new hairstyle in plain words. Unlike Photoleap it has an Android app and a web editor, and it lists web prices of $25 a month or $77.99 a year.

Price: $25 a month on the web, or $77.99 a year; 7 day trial (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: It edits photos you upload and describes no text to image generation, and you must cancel 48 hours before renewal to avoid a charge.

6. ImageQuarry

Best for: Long editing sessions where every described change should stay as a version

How it differs from Photoleap: Photoleap saves each photo session automatically so you can continue later. ImageQuarry keeps more than the latest state: each change you describe becomes a new version, earlier versions stay in place, and you can branch from any of them inside a project. It also lets you choose between four named models, with Nano Banana 2.1 as the default.

Price: Paid monthly plans, Starter $9 and Pro $29 (as of 2026-10)

Limitation: It is not a layer based photo editor and has no animation tools, every plan is paid, and ImageQuarry publishes no output specifications yet.

Who should stay with Photoleap

  • You edit on an iPhone or iPad and use layers, masks and RAW files together with AI tools in one app.
  • You like blending yourself or a friend into generated scenes with the character reference option.
  • You make short animated posts, since the Animate tool and GIF export have no direct match among the alternatives above.

How to try an alternative alongside Photoleap

  1. Pick three photos you recently edited in Photoleap, including one where you used AI Transform or a Custom replacement, and keep the untouched originals.
  2. Write down the prompts you typed for those edits; each alternative above also takes a description of the change, though the wording may need adjusting.
  3. Repeat the same edits in the alternative and compare them with your Photoleap results side by side.
  4. Check the price the alternative publishes for its billing period before a trial converts, since Photoleap's own App Store entries do not state theirs.
  5. Keep Photoleap for layered and animated work while the alternative handles the jobs that made you look.

Does not carry over: Layered Photoleap sessions, animations and character reference setups are Photoleap features and do not transfer to other tools.

Photoleap alternatives: questions

Is there a free alternative to Photoleap?

Picsart offers a free AI image generator with limited generations per day, Pixlr can be used without an account and gives new users 20 images, and ChatGPT's free plan includes limited image creation. Photoleap has some basic features plus a 7 day trial of Pro. Every ImageQuarry plan is paid.

Is Photoleap available on Android?

The Photoleap website says "Available for iOS only", and the App Store lists iPhone, iPad and Apple Vision. Its animation page confusingly explains animating "on an Android" and calls water and 3D motion effects iOS exclusives. If you need Android, Picsart, Pixlr, Facetune and ChatGPT all list Android apps.

How much does Photoleap cost?

The website shows no price list. The US App Store lists in-app purchases from $6.99 to $59.99, including a "Photoleap Subscription" at $7.99, $37.99 and $59.99, without labeling the billing period of each.

Photoleap or Facetune: which should I use?

Both come from Lightricks. Photoleap is a general editor with layers, text to image and Generative Fill on iOS. Facetune focuses on selfies and portraits, takes edit requests in plain words, runs on iOS, Android and the web, and costs $25 a month or $77.99 a year on the web.

Which alternative edits part of a photo from a description, like Generative Fill?

Pixlr's Generative Fill and Photoshop's Generative Fill both work on a selected area and a prompt, and ChatGPT lets you select an area and describe the change. In ImageQuarry you select a version and describe the change in words, such as a new background or an added object, and each request produces a new version.

How does ImageQuarry compare with Photoleap?

Photoleap is a full photo editor with layers, masks and animation. ImageQuarry is a workspace for creating and changing images by describing them, where versions stay together with their prompts and references and you can branch from any of them. Its plans are Starter at $9 a month and Pro at $29 a month.

Create an image. Edit it with words. Keep refining.

Edit in words and keep the trail of every change

Upload a photo, describe the change you want, and compare the versions before you download the one you choose.
