# Microsoft Designer alternatives for business graphics and AI images

Microsoft Designer is Microsoft's graphic design app that turns a description into images, cards, invitations, stickers and collages, with AI edits such as erase, background blur or removal, and upscaling. People look elsewhere mainly because Microsoft licenses Designer for personal, non-commercial use, and because its FAQ does not describe changing an image by typing the change. Recraft and Ideogram suit paid business work where typography matters, Adobe Express and Canva suit template-led social design, and Kittl suits print-on-demand sellers. ImageQuarry fits people who mostly want to refine an image by describing each change and keep every version.

_We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. Microsoft Designer and each alternative were compared on usage terms, editing in words, text in images, brand kits, platforms and price, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026._

## What is Microsoft Designer?

Microsoft calls Designer "a graphic design tool that helps you create, design, and edit effortlessly". You describe what you want and it can produce greeting cards, invitations, images, stickers and collages, and it also makes banners and a brand kit with a logo, font, color palette and brand voice. Photo edits include erasing distractions, blurring or removing backgrounds, framing and upscaling. Designer runs on the web, in iOS, iPad and Android apps, and inside Word and PowerPoint through Copilot.

_Microsoft Designer is a design app with AI image features, so the overlap with an image editing workspace is the step where you generate a picture and then touch it up._

## What Microsoft Designer does well

- **No charge to start**: Microsoft's FAQ says "Designer is free to use", adding that a subscription may be required for people who want to create more often. You sign in with a Microsoft account.
- **Many design formats from one description**: One description can become a greeting card, invitation, sticker, collage or banner, and the brand kit generator drafts a logo, font, palette and brand voice. Collages take up to 10 of your own uploaded images.
- **Inside the Office apps you already use**: Designer's Image Creator works inside Word and PowerPoint through Copilot; Microsoft's Word help page, read as search indexed text, says it is powered by a DALL-E 3 model. Text to image there needs a Copilot Pro subscription.
- **Upscaling, credentials and cloud saving**: A starting image can be upscaled to 4K, C2PA content credentials are attached to images generated or edited with AI, and designs save to the cloud automatically.
- **Easy ways to get files out**: Download saves the design to your device, sends it to your phone with a QR code, or copies the image to paste into a file or email.

## Where Microsoft Designer falls short

- **Licensed for personal use only**: The FAQ states that Designer "is licensed for personal, non-commercial use with your Microsoft account."
- **Edits are tools, not typed instructions**: Erase works by clicking an object or drawing a mask, and the FAQ lists erase, blur, background removal, framing and upscaling without describing an edit made by typing the change.
- **Text in images can come out wrong**: Microsoft warns that text in generated images "may not be in the requested language or may have spelling errors."
- **One brand kit and regional age rules**: Only one brand kit can be saved at a time, and generative features are limited by age requirements that differ by region, so some features such as Upscale may be unavailable.

## Why people look for a Microsoft Designer alternative

- You make graphics for a business or for clients, and Designer is licensed for personal, non-commercial use.
- You want to change a picture by typing what should be different, which Designer's FAQ does not describe.
- Your designs carry headlines or product names, and Microsoft warns that generated text may be misspelled or in the wrong language.
- You manage more than one brand and Designer keeps a single brand kit at a time.

## The 6 Microsoft Designer alternatives

### 1. Recraft

Best for: Designers who need brand styles, vectors and typography with commercial rights
How it differs: Recraft has a natural language image editor where you describe the change and it renders on the same canvas, which Designer's FAQ does not offer. Its own models produce editable vectors and design-ready typography, and custom styles built from your images can be reused, rather than a single brand kit.
Price: Recraft Basic, $12 billed monthly or $10 a month billed yearly (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: The free plan is limited to Recraft's own models, its images are public and owned by Recraft, and they carry no commercial use.

### 2. Ideogram

Best for: Posters and ads where the headline inside the image has to be spelled right
How it differs: Ideogram's pricing page says it claims no ownership of generated images and you may use them for any purpose, including commercial use. You can start from an existing image and type what should change, and Studio combines image and text layers into a layout.
Price: Plus costs $20 a month, or $180 a year on annual billing (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Images are public in the community unless you are on Plus or Pro, and AI editing is not available in the slow queue.

### 3. Adobe Express

Best for: Social posts, flyers and short videos from templates, with Adobe's AI built in
How it differs: Adobe Express covers the same template-led design as Designer, and its pricing FAQ says that in general you may use generative AI outputs commercially. Insert object and Remove object work by brushing an area, and an AI Assistant lets you prompt, create and edit layers, though it is in limited beta.
Price: $0 plan; Adobe's iOS app lists Adobe Express Monthly at $9.99 (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: The AI Assistant that edits from prompts is a limited beta for Premium, desktop and English (US) only, and beta features may be personal use only.

### 4. Canva

Best for: People who want a large design editor with Canva AI and version history
How it differs: Canva's help pages, read as search indexed text, describe refining a design by typing a prompt in the Canva AI tab and Magic Edit, where you brush an area and describe what to add or replace. Paid plans keep up to 1,000 previous versions of a design, a history Designer's FAQ does not mention.
Price: $0 with 20 AI uses a month; Pro US$18 month-to-month (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Typing changes in Canva AI needs Pro, Business or Enterprise, free accounts have no version history, and Canva's facts here come from indexed text because direct fetches were blocked.

### 5. Kittl

Best for: Print-on-demand sellers who need a license for merchandise
How it differs: Kittl's Pro and Expert plans come with a commercial license covering up to 500,000 copies, which suits merchandise that Designer's personal-use license does not. Its generator lists models such as Nano Banana Pro, Seedream 4.5, Ideogram 3 and Recraft V4 Pro inside a design canvas with fonts and mockups.
Price: Pro at $15 per editor monthly, or $144 per year (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Kittl's pages do not describe editing an image with a typed instruction, and Free plan images appear in the public Explore tab.

### 6. ImageQuarry

Best for: People who generate a picture and then shape it over many rounds of typed requests
How it differs: Designer edits with tools such as erase and background blur. In ImageQuarry, you type the change you want, such as warmer light, a new background or an added object, and get a new version while the earlier ones stay. You can add reference images for a material, palette or light, and branch from any earlier version.
Price: Starter is $9 a month and Pro is $29 a month (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Every plan is paid, it is not a template or layout tool, and it has no published Terms or rights policy yet, which matters for client work.

## Who should stay with Microsoft Designer

- You make cards, invitations and stickers for yourself or family, where the personal-use license fits.
- You want designs inside Word and PowerPoint and already pay for Copilot Pro.
- You only need quick fixes such as erasing an object, blurring a background or upscaling a photo, at no cost.
- You use Designer's phone apps and like sending a finished design to your phone with a QR code.

## How to try an alternative alongside Microsoft Designer

1. Open your saved designs and use Download to save the ones you still need to your device.
2. Write down your brand kit's logo, fonts, colors and brand voice, since only one kit is stored at a time and it stays in Designer.
3. Pick one business design that the personal-use license kept you from using and rebuild it in the alternative under that tool's paid terms.
4. Check the alternative's own terms page for commercial use before you publish anything made there.
5. Keep Designer for personal cards and quick fixes while business work moves.

Does not carry over: Designer's brand kit, saved designs in Microsoft's cloud and Copilot access in Word and PowerPoint stay with your Microsoft account.

## Microsoft Designer alternatives: questions

### Is there a free alternative to Microsoft Designer for business use?

Adobe Express has a no-cost plan, and its FAQ says outputs from generative AI features can in general be used commercially. Recraft's and Kittl's free plans exclude commercial use, so business work there needs a paid plan. Every ImageQuarry plan is paid.

### Can I use Microsoft Designer images commercially?

Microsoft's FAQ says Designer is licensed for personal, non-commercial use with your Microsoft account, as of October 2026. Recraft grants commercial rights on paid plans, Kittl includes a commercial license on Pro and Expert, and Ideogram says images may be used for any purpose.

### Which alternative gets text in images right?

Recraft lists design-ready typography and Ideogram's Studio assembles image and text layers into a layout. Microsoft notes that text in Designer images may be misspelled or in the wrong language. No tool here publishes a measured spelling rate, so check headlines before you print.

### Which Microsoft Designer alternative lets me edit by typing the change?

Recraft's natural language editor, Ideogram's change box and Canva AI on paid Canva plans all take a typed change. Adobe Express has a prompt-based AI Assistant in limited beta. In ImageQuarry, each typed request makes a new version and the earlier ones stay.

### How does ImageQuarry compare with Microsoft Designer?

Designer is a design app with templates, brand kits and Office integration. ImageQuarry is a workspace for one image at a time: describe it, ask for changes in words, keep each version and download the one you choose. It has two monthly plans, Starter at $9 and Pro at $29.
